Monster Snd and T2 problem

4 posts by 3 people · 18 Oct 1998 - 26 Oct 1998

I am having problems getting my Monster Sound game port to calibrate my T2 correctly. I have a Thrustmaster ACM game card and that works fine. What is wrong with the Monster Sound? When I try to calibrate on the Monster the axis for the T2 pedals never seem to calibrate correctly and do not respond when I run F1rs. However the axis for the steering seems to respond correctly. With the ACM card there is never a problem. Please help. Eric

I've got a Monster Sound M80 installed and a TM T2 connected to it. Detected, calibrated and working fine with GPL. Me too, but using the digital game port of the Monster as it's better for modem play as it doesn't poll for interupts, and thus you don't have the comms complications associated with "poll with interupts disabled" selected as you need to for control problem free legacy analogue game card play. Unless the card is malfunctioning, you are likely suffering from a user induced problem, or the following. Is F1rs a DOS game? The Monster sound gameport is **not** legacy compatible, and many DOS games won't even detect it when run in a Win9x window. I assume it's something about not having a conventional gamecard address ie: 201-209. I have the same problem with GP2, which is why the ACM gamecard still resides in the system. I also need to run the Monster's Soundblaster software emulation otherwise I get no sound in GP2 even when run in a Window. Problems disappear altogether with contemporary games. The easy solution if you have a spare slot, is to use the supplied Monster cable run a legacy soundcard of your choice beside it for legacy apps. I have the card, but not the space.

Hi Eric, Hope this helps. Make sure you have the thrustmaster connected to monstersound game port (rather than standard). Try reducing the monstersound acceleration(?) slider to nil in the MSound control panel (or download a copy of DirectControl from www.agn3d.com and disable acceleration(?)). >I have an MX200 sound card and a T2 wheel+pedals, and I have a lot of >problems, even with the propanel: I have Monster Sound M80 + T2 (Manuf. 95/09/21) *with* adapter. The gameport in the MX200 and M80 are essentially the same as I understand. Hmm.. Many DOS games simply won't recognise the M80 port period (ie: GP2) even in a Win9x windowed DOS session. Mine calibrates correctly in Win98, Propanel, and GPL. NB: For the record, I was expecting improved performance from the M80's digital port over the older typical sound card type gameports (ie: SB16 etc). Forget it. Whilst there is certainly no spiking and it functions as well as any other soundcard gameport I have used, for those who do appreciate the difference, steering fidelity in GPL was **significantly** diminished over my usual dedicated gamecard using this port, so much so as to make it unenjoyable for it's unresponsiveness and lack of realistic feel 'in sim'. (ie: counter steering, early arrest of slide etc.) I reinstalled my co-existing TM ACM gamecard and voila! I can't exclaim loudly enough the difference in fidelity and feel of the sim using your T2 on this port. Of course the added benefit is that it does support DOS (GP2) games. I've used TM's ACMs for years and would never be without one. The negative is that is does take up an ISA slot. Also, unlike the digital port, the ugly "poll with interrupt's enabled issue" potential IRQ problem with modem (online) play raises it's ugly head. There is no conflict co-existing with M80 gameport as it doesn't use the same resources (201-209), and you can select the specific port you wish to use with the controller in Win98. The new dedicated digital game cards sound promising (forget the name of the manufacturer)...unfortunately and unlike the TM ACM, their price makes them an expensive consideration, especially outside the USA. At around USD$100-, the landed cost here in Australia would be circa AUD$200-, a bit 'over the top' for my budget. Mind you, if racing sims were my **dedicated** and **only** or **major** area of interest, I think I'd make the sacrifice and find a way to prioritise one into my system. Ref the calibration problems. You've probably already checked this so forgive me mentioning it if you have, but have you checked Thrustmaster's site and cross referenced the indicated date of manufacture of your T2 to see if you do/don't require the adapter. There is some confusion on this issue with the T2 as the adapter was introduced during it's mid life cycle, and some do whilst some don't. Thrustmaster (finally) list these T2 dates and requirement quite specifically.
