Bonjour Guy...
That's normal.. Rendition cards are great for Papyrus-based simulators, but
that's all about all.. If you plan on racing mostly Papyrus racing
simulators, get yourself a Rendition V2200 card (the Hercules Thriller 3d
8meg is IMHO the best choice). But if you plan other racing sims (or more
in the arcade and semi arcade/sim games) get yourself a Voodoo2 card. On a
system like you a Voodoo2 has a better performance than a Voodoo1 card.
Gp2 will run with no difference whatever video card you have. It's just the
CPU power that is good for Gp2. You have the same framerate with a Trident 1
meg than a SLI Voodoo2 24mb cards ;)
Yep.. it's a good card, but remember Rendition chipsets is a 2d/3d combo.
You will need to throw out your current video card. That's why I would
suggest a Voodoo card (3dfx)
It's not really a big difference. While Voodoo card will support a higher
resolution... they lack Anti-aliasing. Colors are a little bit washed up and
the blending is IMHO always a little too much done compared to Rendition
version of GPL.
Yes... the sims you wrote were : Icr2, N2, Gp2 and GPL. If you only plan to
run those sims, I would suggest a Rendition card. And in the future if you
want to race other types of sim.. you can easily add a Voodoo video card
without a problem.

Hi, I am looking for a second card to use with a Dell PII 350.
It has a 100 mhz bus, and a ATI AGP 2x video, 8 MB, factory installed
I am reading here a lot about GPL. I have not seen it in stores here yet,
but I was wondering if I would be better off with a Voodoo2 or a rendition
based card to play it.
I had a first generation rendition V1000 ( Creative Lab's ) on my previous
system, and it ran ICR2 and Nascar2 great. Not so good with GP2.
With the Dell and the ATI, GP2 works almost great, but from what I read
here, for GPL, I would need something else.
They now sell around here Diamond's StealthII S220 ( or V220 ) for very
little. This is a rendition based card, V2100 chip, 4 MB, PCI
I assume it would still be great for ICR2 and nascar2. GP2 ??
What about GPL ?
The Voodoo2 cards are more expensive, but with 8 MB or 12 MB, this is ok.
What would be the difference in GPL ?
Since Papyrus makes great sims, and seem's to have adopted Rendition chips
to a point, I would tend to lean towards Rendition.
Are there some other Rendition V2100 based cards that would be better ?
Many thanks
Guy Brosseau
Rendition cards are good for a lot of games, not just Papyrus sims. A
v2100/v2200 card is a good cheap 2d/3d card to use along with a
Voodoo2.

This is true
But I believe the original query was asking about one or the other. Overall,
I consider the Voodoo2 to be far superior, albeit far more costly. Also, one
must consider the TNT-based cards. Depends if you are looking for todays
support, near future, or further future. And, of course, on the specific
titles of interest.
The newer Renditions are decent D3D accelerators, already falling behind the
times. A few (very few) games directly support Rendtion's proprietary API.
Racing sims from Papyrus are some of those. Thus their emphasis in this ng.
If N2, ICR2 and GPL are very high on your list, you can get a V2x00-based card
for very cheap (I've just read $10 after rebate!!!).
If you need Glide support (many flight as well as racing sims), there's no
other choice than a 3dfx. The just-released Banshee is a combo 2D/3D card for
not much more than $100. Voodoo2 prices have just been lowered across the
board. You can now get two V2's (SLI mode) for $230 from Guillemot. That is
currently the best way to go now. But if extremely large textures, 24+ bit
color, AGP utilization, and/or texture compression become the norm, the card
will suffer in '99.
The TNT's seem to have it all, except the all-important (IMHO) Glide support.
And germaiin to this ng, no support in GPL. I expect that GPL will be one of
the last major titles released without D3D or OpenGL support. (I sense
incoming!)
If I were starting from scratch, I'd have the TNT as the main board, and a V2
as a Glide 3D add-on.
