Thanks to Tim McArthur for hosting public GPL server

Racers thanked Tim McArthur for hosting a GPL server on his cable modem, which drew many players for clean races at Monza, Mexico and Silverstone. Posters from Australia and New Zealand reported pings of around 450-600ms with tolerable warping, and McArthur said he would host more often.

Wow, just had an excellent jaunt at Monza on Tim Arthur's cable modem "network"<g>. Top four finished within 5 seconds of each other in a masterfully clean and fast race up front. I ran mostly 130's with a few 129's and still could not pull these guys in. Knowing how hard it is to drive these cars and seeing a group of almost 18 guys do it together online is mind boggling. Getting within inches in Nascar 2 is one thing, getting within inches in GPL is an entirely different animal. Just a matter of time before league pop up, I hope. Again thanks to Tim and kudos to the good drivers in the race. P.S. Randy Cassidy from Papyrus was spotted at Monza also...how many producers of other games have you had the pleasure of competing against?? Papyrus continues to be a class act. A big thank you from me as well and my apologies to Randy Cassidy for dumping you going into the Parabolica at Monza. My bad. ;) The racing was great and the warping wasn't too bad on my crappy 33.6 connection. I actually had some good wheel to wheel racing action with a couple guys. Kyle Same here. Your welcome everybody. I have thought about doing this for weeks, but didnt think anyone would be interested. I will try to have the server up more days as well. If I do, I will post the days and times on rec.autos.sim C ya next lap! >A >>>BIG<<< Thank-you to you for making your cable-modem connection >available and for putting up the GPL Server today!! Yes, very good race guys, and you too Rhawn, I was the guy in the Eagle ahead of you that came in third place and we had a nice little battle going while catching the two leaders, good clean racing with no contact amazing! Thanks to Tim McArthur for having the server up and to the drivers who were taking part and were driving cleanly. Just a reminder to people to take it easy on the starts and try not to cause a huge pileup, much better not to push until the tires warm up than to take out the whole field at the first turn. Great racing. --John (Joao) Silva

Raising my coffecup in support to Tim - thanks! Matthew K.
The crash at the start of the Mexican GP was scary but, luckily, nobody was hurt. THANKS, TIM.

I'll second that, thanks again Tim. I had a great time in the Mexico GP. Unfortunately though, I got booted 2 minutes from the end of practice at Monza and I couldn't get reconnected :( -- Sean Black
Yes, big pats on the back all round! Too bad my ISP is a little iffy and I keep getting dropped. New ISP for me next month! :)

New ISP for me next month! :) You mean that you actually connect from Aussie to his "server" in the US ? If so, WOW, is there much warping on your end and what is your average ping to him ???? > You mean that you actually connect from Aussie to his "server" in the US > ? > If so, WOW, is there much warping on your end and what is your average > ping to him ???? Last night the Aussies seemed to be getting around 450ms latency, the warping is not that bad for them. i was getting from 550-800ms depending on how loaded the net was. i watched a race, rather that driving in it, and after a while i noticed that some cars had less warping than others, then after the race i asked the drivers what their latencies were and it turns out that the cars withmore warping had more latency. 200ms latency was giving a very smooth car to watch while 400ms was making a fairly jittery warping one, so i would hate to see what my car looks like to everyone else when i'm at 800ms latency :) I just try to give everyone as much room as i can so i don't cause a problem.
Not only aussie's couple of kiwi's on last night. average ping 600 ..not to bad I thought. some good racing at Silverstone was had by all.. Thanks again
Goy Larsen 16 Oct 1998#427983
> Not only aussie's couple of kiwi's on last night. That is way cool, I was on myself for a couple of hours, but it was mostly US and Euros on at that time I belive So at 600 ms, you get much warping ? Warping was present when I was on, but not too bad, I`ve got about 300ms to him so I`m happy :-) Hail Tim :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy
Yeah Goy, not a REAL good conection but encouraging. I think when the Internet finds abundant bandwidth/efficiency and we all pretty much have cable modems that we'll all be racing together. Dunno about Europe to Aus though.

Dunno about Europe to Aus though. Well, as long as you guys get a chance to join in the fun, right ? As for US to Europe, if you can I can connect to Tim`s server in the US without any of us warping badly, I`ll settle for that, but racing you and Bruce directly would be fun too :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy

i connected to that server from perth on a 28.8 the warp was pretty bad but it didnt matter hehe woulda been ok but for the HUNDREDS of ppl getting on and off it.. we need LOTSA servers >> Yeah Goy, not a REAL good conection but encouraging.
