Upgrade for GPL

9 posts by 8 people · 12 Oct 1998 - 17 Oct 1998

Hi all I have just bought GPL, and like many now planning an upgrade to increase FPS. I only have a limed budget (400 max). At present I have a p200mmx 64m EDO ram voodoo 1 & 2m rage pro. After looking throughu usual computer mags I have found a company who offers upgrade kits and I have narrowed it down to a choice of: Kit 1 celeron 333a Bx motherboard 4m AGP grapics (On board) 16 bit sound (on board) 32M pc100 ram Kit 2 Pentium 2 350 bx motherboard 8m Agp grapics 16 bit sound (on board) 64m pc100 ram I would like if possible to buy from this vendor as they are close to my home so I could return any faulty items. Please could someone in the know please advise Many Thanks Russell

I would agree, for the money get the celeron. I just did the bx/celeron upgrade and have run it at 338, 374 and 450. This is done by changing the bus speed, the celeron is locked at a multiplier of 4.5 so a 66mhz bus gets you a 297, 75=338, 83=374 and 100=450! It runs well at 374 with all graphics and cars. At 450 it did require an increase in cpu voltage to 2.1. All the changes are done in the soft menu and are very easy to try different things. Definitely cool your cpu and your video card! Overcooling everything is highly recommended. By increasing the bus speed everything gets hotter be warned that this will void any warranty. Another thing is that if papy sims are your priority and you intend to run at or near 300 then an 8 meg thriller is recommended, for faster cpu's and general *** get the voodoo II at least 8meg. I am running 128meg pc100 ram but 64 will do fine. Good luck. > Hi all > I have just bought GPL, and like many now planning an upgrade to increase > FPS. I only have a limed budget (400 max). The Celeron 333 is not overclockable to 450 MHz, but most, if not all, Celeron 300A is overclockable to 450 MHz, but only on some motherboards. The prefered motherboard for Celeron 300A is the Abit BH6. I bought the AOpen AX6BC and had to upgrade the BIOS to make it recognise the Celeron 300A (spelled trouble), but then it was easy to overclock to 450. I advice against buying a motherboard that has anything "onboard". The onboard stuff is really hard to exchange :o). Take a look at Voodoo Banshee cards for graphics and this site - http://www.tomshardware.com -. Perhaps the Monster Sound MX300 is also what you're looking for :o)? /Christer

My advise is get a "300"A for starters. The 333 is clock locked at 5X and will only allow OCing to 415mhz (5 X 83) Even with good cooling it is unlikely that running it a 5 X 100/500 mhz would be successful. Maybe someone here could enlighten us? The 300A is clock locked at 4.5 and clocks to 4.5 X 100FSB = 450 mhz very nicely. Also, if you like long replays then 128 megs of ram seems necessary. Hopefully there is something wrong with the way GPL is currently saving replays and 64 might turn out to be ok if we get a fix/patch.

The *best* way is to implement a cryo cooling system. But that's a bit difficult and expensive. :) A good CPU fan and a good heat sink are important. Get a fan with a ball bearing; they're a bit more expensive than the standard models, but last much longer. It's also important to add a tiny patch of heat-conducting paste. You can get it in an electronics store. Do not use too much of that stuff, it's just supposed to bridge that tiny air gap between the processor and heat sink and distribute the heat evenly. As a last point, make sure no HDD cable or similar is blocking the access of air to the fan. If you're not living in a clean air environment, it's a good idea to check the heat sink for accumulating dust every month or so. -- Wolfgang Preiss \ E-mail copies of replies to this posting are welcome.

Agree, I'm having real problems o/cing a 333A - I can't get it to run faster than a 66mhz bus, despite the fact that all my devices and memory were very happy at 75 on my old board. I've been overclocking systems for about 4 years now, and this is becoming a real PITA. For info, its a Abit BH6 board. My advice is to go with the 300a if you can get it - it will be cheaper and experience suggests it will overclock better, I'm thinking of swapping my 333 for a 300... Gee, that doesn't sound right though. Sounds like you need to do a little bios tweaking. Get the FAQs posted here recently? Still, I'd get the 300 though. -- Byron Forbes Captain of Team Lightning Bolt http://members.tripod.com/~HOSHUMUNGUS and http://www.frontiernet.net/~godsoe/bolt/home.htm

Joe further to your request on cooling. I have a Celeron 266 running at 400mhtz. It is a 'boxed version' so has a heat sink/fan on the chip. When I first got it up and running the motherboard (which has a heat sensor - I'm using an Asus P2B) was getting ruight up to 41-42 degrees C (106-108F) after only an hour or so. (I wish I knew what temp the CPU was .....whew!!) Now, it runs at about 28C continuously. What did I do - I grabbed the transformer fan out of my old case and put it in the front of my ATX case - which is midtower size. So obviously a plain old extra fan works wonders!
