Hi everyone, Yes, GPL is a fantastic game. Two questions : 1. while running GPL at a res. of 800x600 on a monster II 8 megs, which sould be the max for a single voodoo2 card, I tried 1024x768 and it seems to work. When in training at Kyalami, i get an average fps of 28-33 (at1024x768) with everything turned on. At 960x720 it get 30-35 fps and at 800x600 I get 36 fps. Is this normal, I mean, I thought a single voodoo2 card couldn't get past 800x600 resolution? Second question : Why is there a difference in sound between driving at novice skill and expert skill. The novice skill sound is the same as in Nascar2 and the expert or pro skill is the original 67 sound. Is there any way to change this? Thanks,

Red Baron 2 also lets single-board owners play at 1024x768. It has to do (I believe) if the game uses a Z-Buffer or not. I guess GPL doesn't.

I was also surprised to see that I could use 1024x786 resolution on my 8MB voodoo2 board. However the framerate makes 800x600 more useful. -Jan Otto

Because the novice car is the wimpy low power trainer. If you want the more meaty sound, then just use the grand prix car.

However, the only exception is the Metabyte Wicked 3D which has special drivers that allow it with 1 board. But these drivers will only work on a Metabyte board.

True, any game that does not require a Z-buffer can do 1024x768 with a single Voodoo2. Red Baron 2 is another example.
>True, any game that does not require a Z-buffer can do 1024x768 with a >single Voodoo2. >Red Baron 2 is another example. Seems most every sim does not use Z-buffering, thus allowing higher res with the Voodoo's (800x600 with the V1, 1024 with the V2). I'd be curious to see a list of which sims *do* use Z-buffering.
I seem to remember reading that in Red Baron II they use a little trick that uses system memory for the Z-Buffer. I guess they could use this same trick for GPL. I'll tell you why it's possible. GPL uses the letterbox format. So in fact the screen isn't 1024x768 but 1024x something smaller. That's why you're able to get higher resolutions. Multiply these: bytes per pixels (2) Number of pixels horizontal Number of pixels vertical Number of frame buffers This should add up to some amount of Megabytes. This is not including the memory needed for the textures. // Johan

I think your forgeting that GPL doesn't use a Z buffer and therfore has more framebuffer memory and can display higher resolutions. Jerry

Yep - the Z buffer (or rather lack of it) is the reason some games allow 1024x768 on 1 Voodoo2 card. The widescreen "feature" doesn't help at all - the res is still 1024x768 even if the game doesn't use the entire screen. It was nicely thought out though (c: -- Andre Queree (Mr Q) If you need my real address for any legitimate purpose (NOT spam) ... queree (AT) fl (DOT) net (DOT) au >>I'll tell you why it's possible.
