GPL - effect on real driving

16 posts by 15 people · 09 Oct 1998 - 13 Oct 1998

As I made a controlled skid around the freeway ramp this morning, I realized that playing GPL has cut a minute or two off my daily commute. Does any one else think the river drives in Philadelphia would make a great circuit? It's close already, considering people's driving habits!

I am still trying to shave that two seconds off of my time as well. Damn school zones! LOL. I found myself saying "Damn I broke way too early for that turn" yesterday on my way to work. I really gotta stop playing before I leave in the morning. >As I made a controlled skid around the freeway ramp this morning, I realized >that playing GPL has cut a minute or two off my daily commute. Haha, yes they would. Scenic too. We'd end up in the river with no shift-r to get us out. I'm in Southern NJ just minutes away from Philadelphia so I know them well. I can see the news headlines now about racing games turning guys into nutters on the road. Wake up - we always were <g>!! I didn't go faster, but found myself instincively thinking I should go easy on the gas peddle ... even though I'm driving a VW van! ;-) Joe

If you want that perfect GPL feeling in your road car, get - no, not a Triumph, or Caterham, or Morgan, but a Hyundai F100 transporter, especially with the factory fitted hard plastic tires. ;) I drive one at work sometimes, and it is a beast on the wet road. RWD, no ABS, unresponsive power steering and no grip. Its tendency to oversteer under power scared me first, but now I feel it just needs an adjustable differential. :) -- Wolfgang Preiss \ E-mail copies of replies to this posting are welcome.

Me Too! I corrected an oversteer condition this afternoon in a slightly banked 'yield through' right hander at about 75 mph in the middle of third gear with the throttle down about 3/4 of the way to the floor. Just a quick snap of opposite lock brought the car back to me! What an exhilirating feeling. After that I just let her drift out towards the curb and got the throttle down to the floor. Now that we have GPL, we need to find a way to simulate the abrupt sensations created by bumps and weight transfer. Wow! Clark A. ....errr.... I do believe that everyone's tounge is planted firmly in their cheek.... get a grip. A few road courses that I would enjoy would be: 1) Mount Vernon Highway running along the ***ia side of the Potomac River from DC to Fort Belvoir. 2) The Chimney Rock Hill Climb in Western North Carolina. 3) River Road in Tucson, Arizona. ....as for my personal driving... the extra punch from the turbo in my 98 Eclipse allows for wonderful exits in tight corners... no front wheel drive in GPL :) ---torque steer is a MOTHER Andrew San Diego

My vote would be The Angeles Crest Highway, situated above LA. It's where all the car and bike magazines do their road testing :- ) -don "To race is to live, everything else is just waiting." - Rudi Caracciola

Thank you, Sgt. Sam Swift. Maybe someday you'll have a decent car and realize that you can have quite a bit of fun while well within the car's and your own limits. Clark A. [snipped report of correcting oversteer]
