Man, you really have to be out of it if you cant follow the newsgroup and
realize there is NO D3D for GPL.
And it does NOT only support Glide, it also supports Rendition which Papyrus
has lots of experience with.
D3D in DX5 was still very hard to work with...DX6 is much better. But you
MUST remember that this game has been in development for over a year, maybe
two so when they started there was no DX5 or DX6 or Riva TNT anywhere so
there decision was made to support Rendition (fimiliar territory) and Glide
Hate to burst your bubble, but Formula Once Racing Simulation
is by far the best Glide racing sim. At least until GPL came out
(which I have no interest in BTW).

No actually.... I would think your choice is excellent..
You know, the good thing with 3d accelerators is that they don't have "2d"
in them. So it's an addon card to the one you presently have, not
replacing...
I had a STB Velocity 128 AGP that was with my Dell PC back in December of
97. It's similar to yours, and by adding a 3d card to it your really good
for every types of ***, except Redline (Rendition).
The Riva chipset is really good for 2d-graphics (impressed me about that).
But for racing simulations... a Glide-capable card is really recommanded.
Well.. maybe not for the past Papyrus titles (SODA and Icr2 are exclusive
3d-accelerated for Rendition, and in fact IMHO Icr2-Rendition looks far
better than ANY racing sims... yes more than F1RS ;-D ). But still for the
majority of racing simulations it's the best choice.
Not only will it do Glide but also D3D and OpenGL. But your Riva is also
good..

Based on my first hand experience testing simulation software right now,
that is going to change.
That said, I own and love my V2 card. But what I'm seeing in development
has completely changed my former views of D3D's ability to perform with
speed and quality.
GLIDE is sweet, but D3D is just as sweet now, IMO.

Anyone know if there will be a patch for D3D patch for GPL???
I can't believe that a game designer would come out with a new game such as
this that only supports Glide!
DirectX 5 has been around for a year, and DX6 has been available for 2

It supports Rendition too.

Chris, if you would have taken the time to READ the post, YES, it's obvious
that GPL does not presently support D3D, the question is, are there any
plans to support it in the future ?!?!
Apparently if there are plans to come out with a D3D patch, it's not been
widely publicized!
As for Rendition, there isn't a decent rendition board on the market worth
owning, however since Sierra has a vested interest in their own rendition
video card, they have chosen to support it.
Let's face it, there have been many, many sim's come out in the past year
that support D3D, such as F1RS, ToCA, MotoRacer, CART Precision racing, etc,
etc....
From the looks of things, if you don't have a 3dfx/voodoo based card, don't
bother asking for any help on this forum, because you'll only get flamed!
Thank's for nothing Chris!
RREVVED, thanks for the honest post, I suppose that the choice I made a year
ago to purchase a Riva128 based 2d/3d card, to replace my aging 2d card, may
not have been the best decision I've ever made, as far as racing sim's
go....
Here's a question for you on a 3dfx side note, however.....
There's a guy at work who is upgrading his current system.
He's looking to unload his Creative Labs Voodoo 2, 8 Meg. PCI board for
$120.
By adding that card to my current Diamond Viper V330 PCI card, I'd have one
hell of a 1 - 2 punch as far as 2d speed and 3d Glide support goes....
Is $120 a decent price for a 9month-1year old video card ? It's also quite
probable that I'll be able to talk him down a bit on price too.
Your thoughts would be welcomed, anyone who feels like flaming, please keep
it to yourself!
Thank's!
Jay J
Say what...? Greg buy this game...from somewhere you can return it .
Drive it for a week and come back and tell me that....the DEMO does not
do this sim near justice.
Cisko you must own this game....

They're

If he can talk his buddy down to $100 or so, I'd just go with that one.
Even if he pays $110 for it, it's worth the hassle not to have to deal with
Comp USA.

and the 8MB will be $80 after $30 rebate (ie. $110 in stores) (see
OGR.COM). Hmm, almost twice as much to add 4MB of RAM? The Voodoo 2
prices are going to go down since the stores are full of them and
better looking, full AGP 2x cards are showing up.

Just to add my two cents, a lot of people with 8MB cards have been
complaining in the flight-sim newsgroup that they are getting
considerably more (and annoying) stuttering from texture thrashing on
the 8MB cards.
It's probably not as big an issue with driving sims since flight-sims
require more terrain textures at once but is certainly an issue to
consider. Especially since driving games, as they get more realistic in
the near future will most assuredly contain more textures...

Your last sentence would be correct if you hadn't included the word
"any".
This is very untrue for most D3D versions...

Hehe. Well it ran OK on my wife's Mystique, so I assumed any. Sorry for
the confusion, didn't know it had probs on other D3D hardware :-)
