I own an AMD, yet right now I wouldn't buy another.
That Celron 300a overclocked to 450 just looks too good...

AMD K6. However, it the back of my mind it seems some sims have problems on
AMD's and/or Cyrix's
Ok What's the verdict ? Will AMD K6 work with all Sims ????

I have a K6 266 64 megs SDram, ATI Xpert 99, and win 98 . I run Microprose
GP II with full graphics and it is a whole new game! My system plays EIDOS
Power F1 and also 3DO/Codemaster's TOCA and no problems. If you are going
to stay socket7 I would recommend getting a non Intel chipset and a 100 MHz
bus that way you can get the K6-2 300 CPU. And get a AGP on your board. I
didn't and wish that I did! Lets just say with a 100 MHz bus and the K6-2
will give the pentium2 a run for its money!

I have an AMD-K6 233 but, with my Ensoniq sound card I cannot play GP2
or N2 due to dos mode incompatibility with the AMD-K6 and the Ensoniq.
Needless to say I'm getting a new sound card.

Yep. I owned a AMD K6/200 - it ran beautyfully on all actual
games...due to the release of GPL I upgraded to K6-II/300 which
gave me about 9 fps more in Viper Racing (e.g.) ;-)))
Plus: the K6-II offers 3dnow! Maybe there will be a patch for
GPl and other stuff as there are quite a lot now. Kick Intel
where it belongs - and get the AMD K6-II...NOW !
Also, man mailt sich...

I didn't get the original message, so I have to comment second hand.
The K6 will work ok with all current sims. Some sims do use the FPU
heavily, though. While the K6 FPU isn't exactly crap, it is in fact
inferior to the one of Pentiums and PIIs working at the same clock
speed. I recently installed a K6 200 (I was given) into my machine,
and there was no discernible increase in speed over the iP166 I had
previously installed for the GPL demo. Even when I was running the
chip at 225MHz, it didn't look any better - and I was looking hard for
an improvement, believe me. :)
K6 chips are a good choice for a sim machine, but not an excellent
one. If you have to replace mainboard and CPU anyway, go for the
Celeron 300A (the "A" part is important) and a good mainboard. Check
the other "upgrade" postings in this group for advice regarding the
chipset. Keep in mind you'll need new PC100 compatible memory, too.
If your current board supports the K6 (-2) 300 (maybe after a BIOS
upgrade), it might be worth a second thought as a low-budget upgrade.
Stay away from Cyrix chips for *** purposes, though. They show
excellent results for "serious" applications, but not for games/sims.

lagging the P-2xx MMX somewhat when it came to games. The new
TNT/C300A combo simply blows AMD away in the *** arena...
overclocked or not. The top Internet hardware testers agree (Anand's
& Tom's). If 3D-Now! is ever implemented on a wide scale.... but I
wouldn't bet my money on it.
