Celeron 300A overclocking for Grand Prix Legends

A user asked about the Celeron mentioned in the GPL strategy guide. Posters explained that the Celeron 300A with on-die cache could be overclocked to 450MHz on a BX motherboard for PII-450 performance at much lower cost. One user had stability problems on an Abit BX6, and others suggested raising core voltage, BIOS updates, conservative memory timings and better cooling.

Automated summary.

The "Strategy Guide" for GPL talks about the "third kind of Intel Pentium"...that being the Celeron, a computer for computer literate guys who can soup it up. is this correct ? Can you buy Celerons anywhere? Are they that economical? Do the big guys e.g. Dell, Gateway, etc. ) make them ? Ok gurus educate me! THANKS ! Tim A. Deatherage "Admitted Sim ***"

Intel makes them. I'd order it over the net of you're definitely going to get one. You need a BX motherboard and PC100 SDRAM as well. I haven't got one, so that's all I know. Ed Benson

It absolutely is the BEST! You've never seen this kind of speed, smooth graphics (even with Voodoo1), and framerates. It's the best computer purchase I've ever made. Pete >Intel makes them. In Aus you can buy a celeron 300A processor for about $490 which i have read can be overclocked to 450 using 100mhz bus speed. Or you can buy a PII450 processor for $1600. You tell me how much you would rather spend! You can usually buy them from any store that sells PC hardware and people like DELL and Gateway do sell Celeron PC but you void the warrenty as soon as you overclock !!

Actually I will be putting in an Abit bx6 mb, Celeron300A, 128meg pc100 ram tomorrow. The system bus will run at 100mhz with a multiplier of up to 4.5 or 450mhz cpu speed. At that it will perform as well as a pII450 for about 500$ less! It must be a celeron A as the plain celeron doesn't have a second level cache. The Celeron is nothing special compared to a standard PII - in fact its inferior - but its way cheaper and can be seriously overclocked - thats why people like it. With a BX board you can spend USD 85 on a standard Celeron 266, and overclock it to 400+ for great *** performance - but windows performance is poor as it has no L2 cache. THe new Celeron 300A is a good compromise as it does have some cache, but its still twice the price of a standard Celery (as they are affectionately known).

It can be run at 450 MHz on a BX motherboard, giving P2 450 performance at a much lower price. You guys must be kidding right? The price of a PII400 is over 1,600??? Yeah right! This must be by itself right? I just saw a computer: PII400 64 ram 32x CD blah, blah, blah(You know the rest nowadays) For 1,600. Now for a single Pentium to be that much is outrageous! >> The "Strategy Guide" for GPL talks about the "third kind of Intel >> Pentium"...that being the Celeron, >> a computer for computer literate guys who can soup it up. is this correct ?

Um, did y'all notice he said, "in Aus..."? Now I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that means Australia, where the prices might just be a little different then they are here. Ed Benson

Hey John... I have a celeron 300a with a Soyo SY-6BA (More info at www.tomshardware.com) and run the celeron at 450 with no lockup problems at all. I have heard very good things about the abit bx6 --- keep trying it could be something very minro. Might also want to try increasing your voltage on your MB from 2.0 to 2.1 or 2.2. Hope that helps... I'm glad someone noticed. Yes that does mean Australia. We have 22% slaped on all hardware plus inport taxes plus our dollar isn't at strong at the US.

>just put in an abit bx6 and a celeron 300a. the abit board does not support >100mhz bus for celerons, read it at their site like I should have. As Intel specify 66 MHz bus for Celeron, you cannot expect any manufacturer to support 100 MHz bus for Celerons. So when I and others run it at higher speed it's at our own risk. Have you tried increasing the core voltage for the CPU? I had to increase it to 2.1 volts to make it work properly. I have now been running it for three weeks without any crashes (except "normal" windows crashes, and a lot of crashes with the Ferrari in GPL). -Jan Otto

I'm using the BH6 which has the celeron in the bios and allows the overclocking. Do you have your memory set for CAS3? This is a more conservative setting and I've been running that with no lockups at all for about a month now. Jeff

I'll keep trying, but so far it ain't so good. Well I've got a full one page Abit ad in the UK Nov 98 edition of PC Direct, and it clearly states 100MHz supported! Apart from anything else, if it *DIDN'T* support 100MHz it *WOULDN'T* be a BX m/b!!! as they all support 100MHz. And from the may posts I've seen regarding this, and the write-ups on Tom's hardware page & Anands site, I'm confident it *will* work. Sounds like you haven't got it set-up right? Have you tried altering the voltage settings? *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

John, not sure if the Abit BX6 fully supports the Celeron overclocking (I've got a BH6 which does). Try running 75MHz bus if the mobo will let you... if not, visit Tom's Hardware site for info on tricking the mobo into letting you run a >66MHz bus. You can also try 83MHz but I read that some AGP cards frown on this. Rgds & Good Luck, Mark

Not every Celeron overclocks well. Other things to consider: --Cooling: Do you keep your case and, more importantly, the 300A cool? Some people have even found that their current fans on the 300A from the factory weren't running. There are super fans for the Celeron available. --Voltage: The Abit boards make it easy to up the core voltage of your board. Have you tried 2.1, 2.2 or even 2.3? --Other componenets: Maybe another card is causing the crash. Try removing the sound card, network card and/or accelerator card if you have any and see if the machine still crashes. Good luck!
Actually, it is not all that inferior. The 300a does have a L2 cache but only 128K vs. 512K. But one advantage is that the cache runs at full processor speed ala. PPro instead of at half the processor speed. And it was only the original 266 and 300(no a) without the cache that performed poorly in windows. Eric
John, I've read that the bx6 boards don't natively support the celeron chip. But I believe you can download a bios upgrade that will fix that for you. No, the cache is the PII's only advantage over the Celeron. For gamers and everday users, the Celeron is the choice to make. As far as precautions, it looks like it's a crapshoot. Some people seem to be able to just set a jumper for thr FSB speed and Voila! They're running 448mHz. Others have to adjust the core voltage of the chip. The Abit BH6 and BX6 are, by far, the best motherboards for this since they allow all jumpers to be manipulated in software by the BIOS. Others find that the chip won't run stable unless they have a ridiculous amount of fans and cooling in the case. Still others have had trouble with other components that don't seem to want to behave on the overclocked system.
