ICR2 STILL RULES DAMN IT!!!!!!

Nostalgic praise for IndyCar Racing II

A poster with an old Pentium 133 declared that IndyCar Racing II was the only racing sim his PC could run and still the best. Others shared fond memories, advised buying a cheap Rendition V1000 card, and noted the CART Racing budget re-release is ICR2.

I feel your pain. GPL is an absolute mindblowing work of code, I still almost can't believe how good it really is. All the best, Mike -- Michael S. Amen, sir! ICR2 was given to me by my uncle when I first got a computer in 1995 (a Pentium 90 with 8 megs of RAM, 1 meg Trident 9440)--and I have never grown tired of it--even as I've upgraded to faster equipment and tried fancier sims. It is a classic that still has a lot of life in it.

^^^^^^ 256Meg HDD? Man, how slow is that thing? You guys whining about 10 fps, just imagine that puppy trying to swap 150 meg ;) What is that, an 8 inch drive? Don't mean to pick on your machine buddy, but I saw that and almost crapped my pants ;) TTYL DobeMan

Go for it man. My cpu was meant to be picked on. The 256mb drive still kicks. It's been a loyal SOB. Can't complain. I'm actually getting awesome framerates on that drive for ICR2 VGA. SVGA is out of the question. It runs horribly. But at least it works, unlike that GPL thingy. :) The Bad New York Rangers Page http://badnyr.homepage.nu http://members.aol.com/NYR2119935/index.html "Let's just kill everyone and let your Gods sort them out!!!!!!" I would definitely suggest you consider buying a video card. Hey, my favorite sim. I'm currently on the last race of my 3rd season. I'm still making memories with ICR2.

I will always run ICR2 , I just hope people like Mark J. Nelson & Chas will keep us drooling at their feet with new things to come....... It is people like the above mentioned that keep me editing & painting things for these sims. Though I am not even close or have the time to be as good as them, but I wil never give up trying to make something for others to enjoy. Dave Reuille Woof Motorsports BSDR Track Editing

I routinely get 25-30fps in SVGA running ICR2 under DOS on my P133 notebook. Grass and road textures turned off, as they don't add much on a LCD screen. Stephen
> Can you reccomend any good ones for under $100? For ICR2 it's Rendition all the way - although some of the newer cards are over the $100 mark, the older v1000 cards should be in the $45 to $65 catagory. If you prefer, the absolute rock-bottom solution would be to locate a store that deals in used systems and hardware...You can usually pick up a decent Diamond-S3 card for about $5~10 bucks. Wont run ICR2-3D tho. Cheers! Marc -- Marc J. I have K6-200, 32 10ns SDRAM, Maxstor 1.6, WD 540, Conner 120! Yeah, the 120's slow, but for DOS and QEMM files, who cares? BTW, GPL is very playable at 512 or 640--must be the Screaming 3D v1000... -- Dream High, Aim High, Fly High--U.S. Air Force -- *****The WINGMAN*****

If you aren't planning on upgrading for awhile, find yourself an used Rendtion card (Screamin' 3D, or Intergraph's Intense 100, or -- memory fades, what's the other one?). You should be able to find one for about 50 bucks. But before you buy the card make sure you can find the "repackaged" ICR2 -- CART Racing by Sierra Sports/Papyrus. This has the special edition to run accelerated with the Rendtion cards. Not only will you think you just upgraded to a faster machine, a whole new dimension to ICR2 will be opened. So what everybody has been saying is, they don't make 1 card with rendition and 3dfx. I have to buy 2 cards to cover both ends? any it's reccomended that I buy a used card for the meantime, and but CART racing for $20 cause that comes with the rendition. But will all the add-on tracks work with CART, cause most of them say for ICR2 only. Well, when I recommended a Rendition card, that was because you only seem to want to run ICR2 and get some graphics and speed better than VGA. Most of the demanding games that would require a Voodoo card may be too demanding for your current system. So if you want to get more life out of ICR2 (and it will be awhile before we see ICR3 -- or whatever it will be called). There are some work arounds for not having to buy the repackaged CART (for which all ICR2 stuff will work). Get the Cyrix patch (I believe) at Sierra, find someone to send you the spd3d.uc file and you will have faster graphics at a higher resolution. There are some Rendition enhanced track patches available, that you can add for "prettier" graphics. -- **************************** Michael E.
