GPL dismissed by player without 3D card

A poster said GPL sucked after struggling with the demo on a PC without a 3D card. Others rebuked him for blaming the game for his hardware and recommended a cheap Rendition card. The thread turned into a debate on whether developers should state more realistic minimum requirements.

I don't want any hate mail over this and I don't mean to offend anyone but I played the demo and it sucked!!! I'm not into this game as some of you are but what If hear and seen, its ok but not great...........It wouldn't run on my PC now, I got one run of it...in which I couldn't complete a single lap 'cause of the car being so temperamental(I know cars were like that back then) but the requirements for the game make it real slow and you have no hope of controlling it!!!!! Alright you'll all tell me I'm in the dark ages 'cause I don't have a 3d card and a really high spec machine, but I did some major upgrades around 12 months back and now my computer is out dated again.....I know thats the way it goes but thats not the way my money flows!!!! If you have a really really really fast PC it could be ok but I still don't think sits as great as all you guys say.

>It's not slow on my system. It runs at the maximum 36 fps. What's your system specs? And is that 36fps with a full field and all graphics? Just curious.

You're fully aware that your PC hasn't got the horsepower to run it...and yet it's GPL that sucks? I think AGN are looking for reviewers if you're at a loose end... ;-) Cheers! John

If you computer SUCKS dont say GPL sucks. Any new game you buy is gonna suck on your system BTW. Time to get a 3d card or a new system. Or better yet just stop playing games all together so we dont have to read this kind of BS from people like you. Running GPL or just about any modern software without a 3D card makes you clueless. Drop by the 2nd hand software shop sometime! PS- someone's gunna drop in here soon and complain about bad GPL frame rates on their pocket calculator!

The date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 18:29:51 +0100; The message..... Sounds like a 3d card is all you need really. What spec is your system? Even a cheapo (50) Rendition card will make a massive difference. The 3d card does just about all the graphics processing thus allowing your cpu to get on with calculating the physics. A *huge* burden is lifted from your cpu. Apparently the demo is miles behind the Full Version as far as quality is concerned. Also the feeling of speed is meant to be awesome on circuits *other* than Watkins Glen, which may be the one your running. Then there are the setups................... I'll have to wait 'till the October 9th to get the full lot, but it certainly sounds worth the wait.

How can the requirements for a game "make it real slow"? The requirements are there to show you that if you have a machine that is below what the requirements state you probably shouldn't bother with the game. Then don't ***. If your machine can't handle the game that's fine. But, that doesn't mean you should try the game on a deficient machine and then post that the game sucks because you can't play it. What you think is irrelevant. You tried the game on a machine that, by your admission, is below the stated minimums. The conclusions you drew from your experience in that environment are baseless. Sierra published minimum system requirements because they knew that anything below that line would be unplayable. Anything at the system minimums is probably just playable with all of the options turned off, that's why it's a -minimum requirement-. To truely enjoy a cutting edge, technologically advanced simulation you will need a cutting edge, technologically advanced machine.

Well, I don't think a AMD K6 200 is a really fast PC - but GPL kicks ass on my machine...at least in the demo. I've replied to people above who have said the same thing, I'm not putting you all down, just giving my idea of things and the game looks ok but plays crap!!

I know. I've heard of them, I know of them, I know all about them, but I've never seen a rendition card!!!
Graham H 02 Oct 1998#423832
I know my PC is slower than the requirements but to be fair I've played games like that before and atleast I can still manage to play it slowly.....and don't say it the physics!!

Hear the story about sour grapes? It is that great! If you can't run it now, be sure to pick it up in the future whenever you upgrade. >I don't want any hate mail over this and I don't mean to offend anyone but I >played the demo and it sucked!!! >I'm not into this game as some of you are but what If hear and seen, its ok >but not great...........It wouldn't run on my PC now, I got one run of >it...in which I couldn't complete a single lap 'cause of the car being so >temperamental(I know cars were like that back then) but the requirements for >the game make it real slow and you have no hope of controlling it!!!!! >Alright you'll all tell me I'm in the dark ages 'cause I don't have a 3d >card and a really high spec machine, but I did some major upgrades around 12 >months back and now my computer is out dated again.....I know thats the way >it goes but thats not the way my money flows!!!! >If you have a really really really fast PC it could be ok but I still don't >think sits as great as all you guys say.

Acceptable to who? They can't read your mind... Trips
If you just got a PII 450 and found that GPL ran fine on a P200mmx how would you feel. Sounds like you lot need to buy your software from a 2nd hand shop! What a load of ***it is to think that new software should not be designed to run optimally on the latest hardware. Should GPL run on a 486? 386? ...................

Did I *say* it should run on a 486?!? NO. If the program takes advantage of the latest hardware, FINE, I'm all for it. I'll have to decide if I want to get a newer machine just for one game. Just don't state the minimum requirements at a p166(thus giving false hope) when in REALITY you need a 266 to get any enjoyment(playability). Did I make it clear this time? In article

I'll have to decide if I want > to get a newer machine just for one game. one game? or a new generation of games? actually, no. so what you're saying is that all software producers should make a list of minimum requirements. minimum to run the game (p166) and then the minimum required to passify people of all different personalities. that alone could take the backside of the box. perhaps a velcro leaflet of some sort attached to the box listing various degrees of minimum requirements so that _everyone_ is taken into account. don't blame papyrus for the fact that you won't upgrade. a pII based motherboard and chip are _entirely_ too cheap now to hang onto that processor you have. that, or find a hobby you can afford/cope with shelling out some bucks for. video games/sims are a little out of your league, apparently. -jch

I'm sure they did too, but I'm not sure what it was that they heard. It almost sounds like you expect all playtesters and customers to have the same standards when it comes to framerate. Trips
Surely you don't take the slightest notice of what the min req say's on any box do you? Mike Lescault, former Papy spokesman, told us we'd be wanting a PII300 ages ago. Maybe that's why he's an ex employee. LOL.

Actually Byron it runs rather well on a P200MMX/Monster 1/ 64M RAM. You do have to lower the number of cars in races...I've tried 5-7 with acceptable (35fps) framerates and all options on. I've found the the number of sounds is what really sends the framerate down the tubes...so I leave it set at 3 and I'm a happy camper.... ....but I really do need to upgrade to a P II-350...<wink> Brent
