Poll: which steering wheel do you use?

A poll on wheel ownership drew answers covering the Thrustmaster T2, GP1, NASCAR Pro and F1, the TSW, ECCI, CH pedals, the Hyperstimulator and homebuilt rigs. Marc Nelson summarised the T2 as the best seller, ECCI as tops for satisfaction and TSW as the hardcore favourite, and several planned to move to the Saitek R4 force-feedback wheel.

hardware: wheels/pedals

Automated summary.

> Dear fellow sim racers, > I myself have Thrustmaster's Nascar Pro. > How about you?? I wore out my T2, and ended up buying two GP-1's from Costco for less than fifty bucks each. I really like the GP-1 and the wheel mounted paddles. I intended to have one for a spare but of course both get used for LAN racing. Go TM. All the best, Mike P.S. I might try out their new Nascar Sprint wheel, or maybe the RS force feedback model, it looks pretty darn cool for the price <ggg.. -- Michael S. > Dear fellow sim racers, > I myself have Thrustmaster's Nascar Pro. > How about you?? Thrustmaster Grand Prix 1...sure the paddle controllers aren't the most realistic tools for the job (I'm using them for the gas and brakes), but they work great and you don't have to constantly kick them around with your feet when you're not racing. -- Sergey Zakharov To reply, remove "-nospam" from my email address

gp1 and ch pedals. I have made 3 modifications to the GP1 to get it working satisfactorily. 1) wiring change so pedals/paddles work with monstersound. 2) bungie loosening (what is up with the TM springs - do they think we only play 1/2 hour?) 3) range of motion improvement. CH janes stick, pro throttle and regular pedals (with a usb mouse) rule everything else.
Check out the Thrustmaster Grand Prix 1. I think it's going out of production soon, but you should be able to find some around. CompUSA usually stocks them, or you can order direct from Thrustmaster. I think they're retailing for $39.99 now. The GP1 is a wheel-only setup with paddles on the back of the wheel that serve as throttle and brake. That's what I've got right now, and it seems to be one of the best economical (read, cheap) wheel solutions.

I tried the TM T1, T2, and GP; usable, but mine were all sloppy around center. Also tried a CH VPro for a day; it sucked big time for driving. More recently, for 6 months until this evening, I used an InterAct UltraRacer PC. It's a small, fist-held "toy" with a little wheel like on RC car controller's. This worked great. I could sit comfortably back in my chair, feet on the CH pedals, and do everything without having to clear room on the desk to clamp down a big wheel. It has a trigger style throttle that I used for the clutch in GPL and GP2. The only drawback was my fingers would cramp on the wheel after a couple of hours. The UltraRacer with CH pedals was by far the best combination I tried up till now. This evening, I dragged out the second joystick I ever bought: an old cheapie CH stubbie stick thing from more than ten years ago. If you've ever seen them, you might remember. It's a little, beige colored, square based thing with a stubby little stick. The pots are still smoother than anything else I've got here -- lots of TM, CH, MS, and one Gravis. The spring pressure is light, and centering is very positive but not notchy. I hold the base of the stick lightly with thumb and forefinger. Flipping lock to lock is a simple matter of a slight nudge with finger or thumb. Fine control at speed is also effortlessly easy thanks to the light action and good centering. The hands down winner: an old CH Mk2 (I think that was its designation) and CH pedals. I lapped Nurburgring a full 12 laps -- more than 3 hours -- this evening, and I can still type with both hands. I couldn't do that before with the UltraRacer-rictus. It's funny how technology came full circle for me. Newer is definitely not always better. (The GPL strat guide mentioned the developers' preference for joysticks combined with pedals, also. It was the right suggestion at the right time. You'll be happily surprised too, I think, if you try it.) Michael. > Dear fellow sim racers, > I myself have Thrustmaster's Nascar Pro. > How about you??
Yes: InterAct UltraRacer PC, $39.95. It's sorta like a gamepad, but has a small spring loaded wheel. > I have a Gamepad. > any good wheels/brake/gas for $50?

I hope that when/if the GP1 goes out of production they TM come back with a new wheel based around the hand levers. I really like this style of analog input for racing plus like one said it's a nice tight package no messy pedals. This has to be their best selling wheel of all time. At least in it's life cycle time frame. BH

I've been using the GP1 for over a year now and still love it. Recently I added a set of the CH pedals and I've found this setup to be a big improvment, lowering my laptimes in most sims. The GP1 will be replaced in the Thrustmaster linup by the Nascar Sprint Wheel. It still includes the levers behind the wheel, but adds a set of pedals as well. I saw this rig for the first time last night. The wheel has 4 buttons but the foot pedals seem a bit cheap to me. I think I'll stick with the GP1 until I can afford the $ 750.00 it will take to buy the TSW with all the features I want <vbg>. -don "To race is to live, everything else is just waiting." - Rudi Caracciola
I am currently using my faithful ol' T2. 3 years old and never a problem with it. Modified it quite a bit by adding shifter buttons to the steering wheel and a more robust and better resistance spring system to the pedals. Thrustmaster have always been excellent with regard to any parts I might need, very quick and free (even delivery) despite how long I have had it. Also have the Nascar F1 (Nascar Pro) ready and waiting for when a change is required. -- Peter Hooper Hammers Express Racing Having tons of fun in the world's first F1RS league http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/as/f1rl.htm >HyperStimulator Model 3000. >TB >>Dear fellow sim racers, >>I myself have Thrustmaster's Nascar Pro. >>How about you??
