I have another stupid question for anyone willing to help me. I am going
to buy a 3DFX card and I want to know if I have to replace my old
monitor(packard bell 1511sl). Also which card do you recomend(it's a
birthday present so the cost is not that important). My system is a
200MMX, 64mbEDO ram, screamin3D rendition card. At some point down the
line I will be getting a Pentium2 and would want to use the 3DFX in that
system. All I really play is N2 and GPL(demo) and Nascar99 and N3 when
they come out(cant wait). Also would I be better off getting a better
rendition card or am I going to need both. I want the fastest and best
graphics possible for these and future sims. Thanks in advance for any
help you can offer. You people on this newsgroup have always come thru
for me. I dont know what I would do without you. Thanks again!! Doug D
I would suggest a 12mb Voodoo2 card of some description.
Despite the hype for TNT, G200, i740 etc, Voodoo2 is still the fastest card
and performs very well on PII systems. You could add a another V2 at a later
date - SLI is awesome and blows everything else away.

This is not for much longer the valid argument for V2, it's just the
great
software support, that is THE argument to buy one (or two), esp. if
you're
interested in sims.

The guy said quite clearly that all he plays is N2 and GPL, and adding
NASCAR99 and N3 later on. Buying a V2 would be bad and somewhat
wasting his money, and buying TWO of them would be an utter waste of
money.
His best bet is a relatively cheap 8Mb AGP Hercules Thriller 3D, and
with a TV out he can persuade himself he needs a 100" projection TV
and race Talladega in life size :-)
Cheers!

Yeah, some of them are catching up and surpassing in speed and visual
quality, but there are still too many sims that are Voodoo *ONLY* to not
have one. Great thing is, you can run it along with any of these other
cards. I may get a TNT or something down the road to replace the Riva 128
now alongside the V2, but I'll still have the V2 because of the support.
I do always love when a friend who raves about his i740 or Riva 128 being so
fast for the $99 they paid, and they rag on me since I spent $300 for one of
the first batch of V2's. Then I fire up Unreal and watch them drool over it
<g>, and ask can they play it like that on THEIR card. It is SO nice not
having to worry about game support, and I'm not really worried about some of
the new cards being 10% faster, I'm not a framerate junkie. Although I
might get a bit jealous if any of them get a Riva TNT, they sound pretty
sweet. But won't do squat for N2 or GPL, nyah nyah.
But, it should be said, most of these other cards are running newer D3D
drivers than the V2 - I have a sneaky feeling that the DX 6 Voodoo 2 drivers
(which are supposed to utilize features not used so far, like the second
texture unit) will level things up a good bit. At least I hope that's why
we're waiting so long on them <g>

Not when the only games you will play are N2 and GPL. The 3dFX is
slower and lesser quality in both, and more expensive. Your definition
of "best buy" needs some work. Even if it's a present it still has to
fit your needs.
Cheers!

I can't speak for the newer Rendition cards (still using the original
one), but for me, the 3dFX out performs the Rendition card in the GPL
demo (while the "richness" of the display can be argued), the frame rate
can not. If one is only adding one card to their system, I would still
argue going for the 3dFX, hold onto the Screamin' 3d for N2 and use the
V2 for GPL. But I also still play ICRII and would rather not deal with
the incompatiabilities of the new Rendition cards vs. the original ones.

But as I recall...
Rendition cards are OpenGL-capable and also D3D-compatible.
It's just glide-accelerated application that won't run on a Rendition card.
But since a Rendition card is a 2d/3d combo, if you really are ***ed by a
sim that requires a Voodoo-based card, there is no problem adding it to your
Rendition card. I mean... Voodoo1 cards a pretty cheap.

Mmmmmm, but the original poster stated he was insterested only in N2
and GPL, and I prefaced my message by saying that. I personally would
prefer a 3dFX because I enjoy other products, but if I liked only GPL
and/or N2 I'd buy a Rendition, enjoy the better visuals and pocket the
saved cash.

V2 is great if you have a PII but one a PI or Pro you don't really get the
benefit.
