What do you think about the warez version of GPL?

Leaked warez beta of GPL appears before release

A poster ran a poll on reactions to a pirated version of GPL circulating online, which doktorB said was a beta leaked by a tester or Papyrus insider. Most condemned piracy as theft and lamented the testers' and developers' work, while a few defended trying software before buying. Jim Sokolov pointed out that GPL was made by Papyrus, not Microsoft.

On Tue, 8 Sep 1998 19:20:24 -0400, "Conklin" >what do you think of the idea that there is a warez version floating around >the net? and what will you do? There's warez for EVERYTHING on the net. I try to ignore the bastards that push that crap. The only ones who benefit are 13-year-olds who want everything before they have to work for it. (I don't mean to insult 13-year-olds, I realize that most of them have 2 to 3 times the mental capacity of warez idiots). Any legitimate gamer or consumer in general pays the price for their little hobby. I say let them stay in their own newsgroups, I'll leave them alone in there, like the ***s and animal sex people... If people want to have a hobby of breaking encryption and product locks I say more power to them. But when they start distributing someone else's work for free for their own ego-trip it disgusts me.
>Any legitimate gamer or consumer in general pays the price for their >little hobby. I say let them stay in their own newsgroups, I'll leave >them alone in there, like the ***s and animal sex people... Ya know what disgusts me? People who belittle the tragedy of pedophila and *** by grouping "warez' people in the same bunch. Where do you come off comparing these two very different groups of people? On a side note, a LOT of companies still don't release demos for their products. You bet your ass I'm going to take a look at a warez version before plucking my hard-earned money on a pile of shit. Stop the madness.

Heheh, yeah, I guess that *** thing was a stretch. Still, most warez fans are NOT, you'll probably agree, just smart shoppers like yourself. They are collectors and thrill on the fact that what they're doing is illegal. Regardless of how useful warez may be to someone like yourself, the community in general that support it are not helping consumers nearly as much as they are hurting us by getting for free what we have to pay for, driving our prices higher... Now I'm going back to my *** newsgroups. Moo if you need me...
I'll vote right here at this booth, thank you: "Cracked" or "pirated" versions of software will be available until a 100% foolproff method of deterring same is invented. However, I will always buy the legitimate product.

It makes me want to puke. I know how hard the guys at Papyrus and the testers worked on this for the past 3 years. To see a pirated beta over the internet just days before release really blows in my book. -- Brian Tate BTate80 on TEN Zanzibar in Quake2 (The guy running around with the middle finger up) Assist LA for THOMAS ENTERPRISES HAWAII ACE LEAGUE http://dithots.org

Software theft isn't such a straight-forward issue. Small to medium-sized companies producing great software need the financial support of the paying public. When people that steal their products the company loses money that they would otherwise have used for R&D and the worse will be their next product. I would urge everyone to BUY the software from these manufacturers that they intend to use. On the other hand, an awful lot of software is written (or distributed) by ONE extremely large company who use restrictive practices and strong-arm tactics to quash their competitors. They have even disabled the products of other vendors in their setup scripts - falsely claiming that they don't work properly. Many of their ideas are 'borrowed'. They take perfectly good standards and modify them for their own purposes. Their strength is their marketing machine. They are prepared to release major software products with thousands of bugs in it and then use that fact to sell the next version. Their attitude is arrogant, shameless and heartless. The number of companies that have gone to the wall with better products is a testimony to this. Putting extra money into their already swollen coffers is something I *** on every time I am forced to do it (and I am forced). If their products are pirated, then I, for one, will not cry but one tear. Paul
If a product is not ***I most certainly DO pay for it. If you saw my collection of original cd' and boxes here you'd know that. It's not fair to throw out a blanket statement like was written earlier in this thread. AND, I'm a developer myself!! I see the ***Microsoft rolls out everyday and it makes me sick to my stomach, but in an inperfect world we have to come up with inperfect solutions to problems and pirating is one of those. It saves me a LOT of money. -- August Branchesi "Proud 98 VW Beetle Owner" >And then you ALWAYS pay for the product if it's NOT crap.....don't you? >> You bet your ass I'm going to take a look at a warez version >> before plucking my hard-earned money on a pile of shit. >-- >Regards, >Bruce. >----------
And that, of course, justifies the act, doesn't it? Therefore, to use your line of reasoning, if someone stole from YOU that would be justifiable because it would save THEM a heap of money. Sheesh! > I'm a developer myself!! The correct spellings for pirated/illegal/hacker's stuff on the internet are all terms that end in "z". example: Warez, FTPZ, MP3z, Appz, Filez, Gamez.. and so on. So the original poster was not a follower, but just using the correct termz :o) doktorB http://webhome.idirect.com/~drbryan/gpl For the GPL track files, FAQs (I've got them!), installation help, release date updates, and more! ----- >I think anyone who thinks they're cute by spelling with a "z", probably >also haz baggy pantz, backwardz bazeball hatz, and crew cutz. Think about this.... If the full version isn't out yet, where did this one come from. It sure wasn't bought off the shelf and posted now was it?

> Theft, is theft, is theft, is theft.....get the picture? perhaps a more appropriate line for this thread would be "steal the picture?" :) In which case that would be encouraging art theft... hmm, maybe i should just shut up:)
If I released a pile of shit and thought I could get away with it? Sure! Power to em. Your narrowmindedness on this issue is really something.

Actually I was very careful not to endorse software theft - I just said that I wouldn't get upset. I believe that the company - that I never mentioned by name - behave like legitimate theives but occupy the m***low ground (only the likes of Rupert Murdoch stoop lower in the commercial world). I might care if they behaved in a benevolent and philanthropic manner, but it seems to me that their only concern is to achieve market *** not by releasing quality products but by obliterating all their competitors by whatever means possible. Their leader sees himself as a semi-deity and a seer and his employees re-enforce that for him. The regular vision of him addressing thousands of pale-faced adoring nurds makes me want to chuck up every time I see it. Robin Hood is an apposite analogy but not because he was stealing from the rich but because he was shafting a complete bastard. Paul

You're aware that GPL (subject line) is being produced well east of Redmond, right? I hardly think of Dave Kaemmer as "a complete bastard"... :-) ---Jim

You're right. I have I tendency to go way over the top. And I wouldn't dream of describing Dave Kaemmer as "a complete bastard" - he didn't do a turn as the Sheriff of Nottingham, did he? Paul
