Is there anyone out there who HASN'T played/seen GPL yet??

Who hasn't tried the GPL demo yet, and why?

doktorB asked who had not yet played the GPL demo. Some NASCAR fans said road racing did not interest them, others cited Windows 98 problems, frame-rate worries or difficulty, and doktorB pointed them to his Win98 install guide, which worked for one user. The thread drifted into overclocking and bus speed advice.

Just wondering.. has EVERYONE here played the Grand Prix Legends demo yet?? If you haven't... why the heck not??.. After all, this IS "rec.autos.simulators".. we should all be interested in this product. I was just a little curious to find out if the arcade-racers who frequent this group (we have to welcome everyone...) are even interested in GPL, or have they dismissed it as being "a boring sim"? If you haven't downloaded the new track..are you planning to?.. are you planning to buy GPL when it comes out.. or could you care less? just curious.. doktorB http://webhome.idirect.com/~drbryan/gpl For the GPL track files, FAQ (I've got it!), release date updates, and more!

I played the demo briefly when it first came out only to get a feel for what Nascar 3 would be like. I personally don't care much about road racing and don't plan on buying the product. Brian
Herr DoktorB.... I have a friend who, due to hardware constraints, had never seen the demo running anywhere near optimum. In fact, he had seen it "running" (if that is the correct term) at below what will be minimum specs. His comments were, naturally, not complimentary...in fact, one could say that he was somewhat derisive about the sim. Last week he was able to upgrade his equipment....still not the optimum (we aren't all millionaires!) but to a level that will certainly enable him to enjoy the sim. He is now enraptured and enthralled by the experience and will sell his wife and children for scientific experiments in order to be able to buy the game when it's released. I am sure that his e***ment and anticipation will be echoed ten thousand times over.

more! I have not yet gotten the demo to work properly on my new pentium 400. I have nothing but sound problems & I hope this is only a demo problem. I will purchase gpl when it comes out as I do any driving game or sim when it comes out.
Hi, I tried it at work one day! :) We had P233's there, compared to the P120 I'am using right now! That should change in a couple of days when I pick up my AMD K6-2 333! And I will finally get to see what this 3d acceleration thing is all about too! Hopefully I'll get to try GPL on this system soon, if I can get it to work in Win98! I'll be defently picking up the game as soon as it is released! Later, John

Yes, I played the original demo for quite a while. I have not downloaded Monaca, or played it since installing win98, just haven't taken the time to make the changes necessary to get it to run in win98. I will be buying it as soon as it hits the shelves though. -- Don Burnette Palmetto Racing Dburn on Ten AOLL Iroc Series Administrator http://pages.southtech.net/palmetto/aoll.htm >Just wondering.. has EVERYONE here played the Grand Prix Legends demo yet?? >If you haven't... why the heck not??.. > Just wondering.. has EVERYONE here played the Grand Prix Legends demo yet?? > If you haven't... why the heck not??.. After all, this IS > "rec.autos.simulators".. we should all be interested in this product. Okay, I'll take the bait... No. I haven't played GPL yet. Why? Well, last year, after spending some fair amount of change upgrading to a (then) higher-end machine... the demo hit the streets. At first I was interested, until I read how "choppy" it was on similiar machines as mine. Remember, I had just spent $$ to get a machine that N2 runs fluidly with lots of eye candy... and now I have to start all over again? No thanks... I wasn't interested in DL'ing a demo that would make me disgusted with my new machine. Of course, now that PII400+ machines are out... guys are saying how smooth it is... but I'm not ready to sink more $$ into *** at this time. Answer to first question: I'm not an "arcade" racer. Answer to second question: No, I wouldn't say it looks boring. It looks like it would be fun sim. HOWEVER... from all that I've read about it's difficulty level. I'm now beginning to wonder if I will EVER want to invest that much time and frustration into simply learing to drive the sim. No. Maybe. (To "stockpile" until the time that I might upgrade again.) Well, it's not that I don't CARE. It's just that I don't want to start spending hefty dollars to bring my (only) 1-year old machine up to spec to run it acceptably. Not when I have three sims on it now that run excellently, and that I haven't exhausted as yet (N2, ICR2, GP2). Actually, I guess it's disheartening that no matter HOW MUCH you spend on a machine...it's only good for about a year... and then the next generation of sims/games will have you back at the bottom of the food chain... only to start the cycle all over again. At some point, a guy has to say "it's enough". I guess, for me, that time has come with GPL. Understand... sort of like: inquiring minds want to know... huh? Andre Ming Still using a lowly P233MMX...

Yep, got Watkins Glen the day after ir first appeared on the net, (I was a bit slow!) and Monza two days after it first appeared (problems with my modem!).......Oh, bye the way, Thank You. I prefer sims, (GP1, GP2, F1RS, NASCAR, RAC Rally, Superbike World Championship, etc) but do enjoy arcade racers too (TOCA, Moto Racer, Motorhead, Screamer2, MTM, etc) I think no matter which you enjoy, you would be hard pushed to label GPL boring! it doesn't matter how good (or bad) you are at driving it, the fantastic driving and physics modelling is awesome, How can anybody *NOT* love it to bits!!!!! The very second I hear about it being released I will be at my local store, camping outside if necessary...... Hope your curiosity has now been satisfied.... 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

I didn't know that it was a requirement to play this demo if I frequent this NG. I haven't had the time yet this summer to try out the demo...I actually have a life (at least in the summer) outside of computers. I shall endeavour to pour every waking moment I have into playing GPL so that you might be happy. Mike
FWIW I used to have a P233MMX which I ran at 225Mhz, and GPL is fine on that system. That is with either a Rendition or a 3dFX card. If you don't have a 3D card then you may have a problem, but second hand ones are cheap enough. Cheers! John
doktorB 07 Sep 1998#419568
I noticed there were a few messages here about people not downloading the demo because they: 1) have heard of "choppiness / poor frame rate / heard about steep system reqs 2) have Windows 98 and have heard that it does NOT work - THIS IS NOT TRUE !!! 3) are afraid that the game (sim!) is too hard to drive Answers to those points: 1) Minimum requirements for the demo: Windows 95, a Pentium 166MHz processor or better with 32MB of RAM and DirectX 5 are required to run this demo. You should also have the latest drivers for your video card installed. The recommended machine for the GPL demo is a Pentium 200MHz with 64MB of RAM and a Rendition or 3Dfx Voodoo card. -- If you don't have a 3dfx card, or Rendition card (Stealth II is $90 i think), then you will experience VERY poor frame rates.. Before I got my Stealth, I was playing at about 12-15 frames/sec (est), and I found it very difficult, but a wonderful experience anyhow. I have heard of people running it ok with as low as 20MB RAM.. but really, the minimum today is 32MB, and most new systems ship with 64MB.. 2) the GPL demo DOES work with Windows 98 ... it's just you have to do a couple of little fixes before you can get it working. It is MOST DEFINITELY worth the 5 minute procedure. (If you don't do the fix, GPL will either not run at all, or else will run with distorted sound and extrememly fast framerate (unplayable)). I have complete instructions on my website http://webhome.idirect.com/~drbryan/gpl ) for installation help of the demo. Furthermore if you have any additional problems, please email me and I'll try and help you problem solve.. Bottom line is that it DOES work, it just takes a little tweaking.. And PLEASE NOTE: The final release of Grand Prix Legends WILL work on Windows 98 .. it is just the demo that is not compatible.. it was made before Win98 was released) 3) If you have heard that GPL is too hard to drive, this may be for a couple of reasons: - poor framerate - obviously, if you are only getting 10-15 frames /sec on "software-only" mode, then you are missing out on 10-20 frames/sec of information. With a graphics accelerator card (3Dfx or Rendition), smooth framerates are possible on even a P-166. And of course, 16 MB of RAM just doesn't cut it any more. - the fact that the car handles "realistically". It took me 2 days before I completed one lap without a spin (in "software" mode). Just take things nice and slow.. Use the GP3 car to start off (You wouldn't do well if you hopped in a real F1 car, either!). Don't try to fastlap.. just get a feel for the car first. Drive fast on the straight sections, and brake EARLY for the corners.. Tip-toe around the corners. Then, gradually move your braking points later.. Before you know it, you'll be pulling off 1:15-1:20's at the Glen (not up there with the record holders, but a damn lot better than 1:45's). - the demo setup is FAR FROM OPTIMAL - the beta testers found that there was over 1 degree of postive camber on the wheels - it shoudl be something like -0.5. This means the car does NOT handle all that well. (But even so, people are still doing times just as fast as the Beta team has managed WITH a good setup!). - lack of determination/ DISCIPLINE (see above... don't press too hard)/time (it takes a while to get good!) GPL SHOULD be shipping by September 30th (confirmed everywhere EXCEPT Sierra N. America!! - they are slow to update there website- it even says "Spring, 1998" on one page!) So if you want a headstart (to get a feel for the tracks (Watkins Glen and Monza are available), start practicing now. The final release will feel very different, as the car setups will have been improved, the tyre modelling physics will have been implemented, and the whole thing tweaked or redone.. Anyhow.. that's all for now.. doktorB http://webhome.idirect.com/~drbryan/gpl For the GPL track files, FAQ (I've got it!), installation help, release date updates, and more! ----

doktorB wrote Dan, I would guess from what I know on the NROS that many of the people actually don't care about GPL just because they are more of a stock-car drivers... If we take per example the NROS, many of those "rednecks" (heh) actually do not race tracks like Darlington or Nazareth just because they find them too difficult. Or course, remember that its not everybody with a wheel in front of a PC that has the racing abilities or experience to be good, but if they can't master an easy oval track on the NROS, I doubt they will have fun with GPL. On Mon, 7 Sep 1998 22:48:54 +0100, "Mark Fisher" >Why did you under clock the 233 ;-) Shocking, isn't it? :-) Actually I had a switch installed on the case which flicked between "x3" and "x3.5" and had the system setup for 75Mhz bus. That meant I could change between 225 and 263 at the flick of a switch. With the system at 233 I was already running "x3.5" and so could only go downward, hence my use of 75Mhz bus. Initially I ran the system at 225 for day-to-day stuff and 263 for GPL, but eventually it got to be tiring having to shut down and switch over, and to recalibrate joysticks every time. I then left it at 225 all the time which was fine for GPL. Cheers! John

Well, I've been driving on this track a little more than is healthy. I am completely, ridiculously impressed with the physics engine in GPL, having been a sim fan for a while now I have some others to compare it to... (all the regular PC sims, including PSX's Gran Turismo)/.. GPL is the coolest!~ The only problem is that now I feel obligated to buy a steering wheel, after all this time.. the lowest Thomas wheel is $200+ and a new graphics card is at least $200. So, do I spend all of this money so that I can enjoy GPL in all it's glory? Or do I just suffer.....////// ps: I custom painted my Brabham Repco to look like Racer X's yellow car and I even painted my gearshift knob black with a little skull on it! no kidding! I'm only using a K6 200 (clocked to 225) with 64Mb a 3Dfx card (Voodoo1) and GPL runs great! Admittedly it may slow down a tad with AI, but it can be tweaked to allow for that? You really *must* try GPL, it will run fine on your pc.... 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

> Why did you under clock the 233 ;-) He is *not* underclocking his pc, he is *overbussing* it. The pc runs at a multiplier of 3.5 & a buspeed of 66 to achieve 233MHz, (3.5 x 66 = 233) but if you lower the multiplier to 3 and change the bus speed to 75 the pc actually runs faster (3 x 75 = 225MHz) cos the busspeed has increased most of the important components in the pc by running at 75 rather than 66MHz. Hi Peter... Admittedly, about all I can do is add hardware/install software, however I find the above point "interesting". Got a few questions: I've heard my Intel P233MMX is limited to 66mhz bus speed internally, if so, how do you get around that? That is, if I bus up to 75mhz... my Intel will still operate at 66mhz. Is this right? Also, what about the 60mhz "refresh rate" on my monitor? Is this also a bottleneck? Assuming I can up my bus speed using Intel, does the monitor refresh rate have to be upped to match with a faster bus speed, and if so, how? Thanks... Andre

Depends, some Intel cpu's have been doctored by Intel so you cannot o/c them? Likewise some m/b's are better at o/c'ing than others? But you can still try it and see? the worst that will happen is that it will not work. You really need a m/b manual to see what your m/b can and cannot do? try changing the multiplier and/or the bus speed and see what happens? 225MHz will almost certainly be faster than 233MHz, and you may get up to 3.5 x 75 = 262MHz. The Monitor refresh rate has nothing to do with o/c your pc, it is merely the rate that the screen refresh is set to, and can be changed to many settings, BTW, 60 is a bit low, usually 75 or over is recommended? or some people can see the screen refreshing at that rate? By Increasing your bus speed you are increasing the video bus speed slightly (cos it runs at *half* the m/b bus speed - so at 66MHz the video bus runs at 33MHz, but at 75 it runs at 37.5MHz) But this usually isn't a problem, and doesn't affect the monitor refresh rate. The main problem with o/c'ing is heat, cos all the components are running faster they get hotter? so check the heat before you start, and then again after you have made the cahnges, As a guide (very rough guide I grant you!) If I cannot hold my hand on the cpu/heatsink while it is running, then it too hot. Usually if you suffer crashes or system hangs after o/c'ing it is cos its too hot, so try using a slightly slower setting? Also just try to increase the buspeed and cpu by one speed increase at a time, do not try and run it at 300 straight away or you may fry your pc internals? increase the muliplier and bus one click at a time and see what happens? NB: I accept no responsibility if it all goes wrong, it *is* a risk to take, don't do it unless you can afford to replace it..... 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

Peter... Thanks for the tips... I've now tried overbussing to 75mhz with zero problems. At this point I'm running at 225mhz on the CPU. Yes, my MB does allow for 75x3.5... I might give that a shot... after all, we're only talking a paltry 30 more mhz from my P233. Might try that later tonight. Again, thanks for the info. Andre
