GPL performance problem

Poor GPL demo frame rate on a Matrox G200

A user with an overclocked Celeron and Matrox G200 got terrible frame rates in the GPL demo. Replies explained GPL needed a Voodoo or Rendition card because it had no Direct3D support. A claim that overclocking is illegal drew widespread mockery, and John Wallace explained how to overclock Celerons by taping a pin.

What is wrong? I downloaded GPL demo for a test testride, but the framerate was ridiculous. My system is overclocked Celeron 266 to 400/100MHz, 64Mb, G200. Is there something special about this game since every other game runs as in PII 400... ---- ///Harri Vainio ///Oy L M Ericsson Ab, Finland
Without a Rendition or Voodoo card your wasting your time! Do you realise that your G200 is not functional with GPL? There is no D3D support for the demo or for the full release version (to date as far as I know).

>What is wrong? Er...Nothing, Well, except that you need a VooDoo (1 or 2) or a Rendition card to run it well...The software renderer in the demo is not optimized, and will be better in the release version, but one of these video cards make a world of difference. FWIW, In your case I would consider a Voodoo card, since this is a add-on, and can coexcist with your G200, where the Rendition would replace the G200. Please note, this advise only goes for GPL. If you use other software (read: games) an other advise could be given. Don't forget, NEVER upgrade before software is released!! It seems that GPL in multi-user mode heavenly depends on the L2-cache, which the Celeron is lacking. Maybe there are more suchs isues, which we don't know about right now. It would be very painfull when you spend a lot of money, only to find out when the game is released, that it wasn't enough. Remco

I would just like to point out that that is illegal.(overclocking).

Hehe, i hope you are not serius...my P2-266 runs at 448Mhz , and no1 arrested me yet ! huh.. Tilus

No I'm not serious but it's to bad you can't do it anymore (atleast with Intel). >No, it's not :o). >/Christer >-- >http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online >racing"-proposal under "For developers". Unless you have air-bags and full racing harness installed, of course. > >>My system is overclocked Celeron 266 to 400/100MHz,> > >I would just like to point out that that is illegal.(overclocking). > Huh????????????? -- Regards, Bruce. ---------- The GP Legends Historic Motor Racing Club is located at:- http://www.netspeed.com.au/brucek/legends/
Are you from heaven or what !!??. How simple youre live seems to be. Ben
Yes you can! Maybe not by multiplyer, but by bus!

Haha! Nice one. And the police are going to kick down my door if I increase the spin-speed on my washing-machine. I bought it, I do what I want with it. This Intel brainwashing is getting out of hand... Cheers! John
That's funny, because my Celeron overclocks very nicely to 450mhz. It's more difficult, but it's far from impossible. Some teflon tape, a sharp knife and a steady hand take the place of jumper swapping these days. Cheers! John
John, Can you elaborate on this a bit...Chuck : That's funny, because my Celeron overclocks very nicely to 450mhz. : It's more difficult, but it's far from impossible. Some teflon tape, a : sharp knife and a steady hand take the place of jumper swapping these : days.

Hi Chuck, One of the connectors on the Celeron slot communicates with the motherboard and locks it at the appropriate bus speed - 66Mhz for a Celeron. By taping over this connector (or painting with nail varnish) you break this lock and can set whatever motherboard speed you like. The clock is still locked to "x4.5", but at least you get 4.5x100 rather than 4.5x66 (or "x4" for a Celeron-266). You can use the same technique to increase the core voltage if your CPU has trouble operating at 100Mhz, just adjusting different pins. Look at http:www.tomshardware.com for more details, since I thin he has an article about it. If not you could try other sites like CPU madness or Ultimate PC. I'm sure one of them will have a "step by step" on there. Remember though, this _isn't_ changing a jumper - it's a bit messier than that. If you haven't got the confidence or you can't afford to lose it, don't do it. Cheers! John

I always thought that this issue was a bit unresolved. I'm sure that the processor companies frown upon it, but that doesn't necessarily make it illegal. Brian Short

>I always thought that this issue was a bit unresolved. I'm sure that >the processor companies frown upon it, but that doesn't necessarily make >it illegal. I'm getting my new Celeron 300A next week, and I will try to overclock it to 450 MHz. It certainly is not illegal to do that to your own CPU. I am aware of the fact that the warranty is not valid if I overclock. What is illegal is if a dealer sells a system with overclocked or remarked CPU's. -Jan Otto

writes I think you will find that (though it may theoretically break the warranty), overclocking a CPU is not a criminal offence :-) mart -- =======================================================================
