Just to be clear, you are not seeing your CURRENT lap time, you are seeing your lap time from 2 laps ago (essentially). In other words, your lap time is one lap in arrears. Robin

Hi, just wondered where *exactly* is the line that determines the *end* of a lap at Monza? The previous laptime comes up fairly soon after exiting the last coner at the start of the straight, but the actual start line (chevroned) is a lot further up the track by the end of the main stand on the right? NB: I *know* some circuits have different start & finish straights, and this appears to be the case with the Monza circuit. But a couple of times on my first few laps I stopped after the previous laptime came up, and exited back to the laptime game screen, and my laptime was *not* shown, I assume because I had not passed the finish line (or the timing point for each lap?) If I want to save a replay of a fast lap, I now make sure I have at least passed the start line before exiting to check the laptime or save the lap. But I would like to clear up where *exactly* is the following... 1) The start line (I assume this is the chevroned line by the main stand further up the straight?) 2) The finish line (appears to be the point where the previous laptimes appear?) 3) Timing point for each laptime (if it is *not* the same as 2?) 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

Peter, I assumed that the start/finish line was the (faint) checkered line right after you come out of the pits. I hadn't even noticed one farther down the front straight. Guess I'll have to go look. As for your lap time, though, I thought it just displayed -- for your prior lap -- when you entered the front straight, as though someone on your pit crew could be holding up a chalkboard for you. That's right.. Just to clarify.. think of it like this: 1. - You cross the start finish line (near the 2nd tower on the left).. timer starts 2. - You come around the last bend, pass the pits, cross the finish line.. timer stops. 3. - NOW, as you come around the last bend, the time for the ABOVE lap is shown on the boards. 4. - The next time you see the board, it will dispay the lap time from the lap you were on in step #3. Hope that clears things up (and didn't confuse you all any more!) doktorb http://webhome.idirect.com/~drbryan/gpl

Not *quite* correct, when you see the laptime appear you are still on the *current* lap, eg:- you have not finished the lap, so the laptime you are seeing is for the *previous* lap, (which is what I said) but that lap is actually *almost* 2 laps past!!!! So you are *nearly* right? we both know what we mean anyway...... 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

So your saying this is where a laptime starts? at the second tower, or near there anyway, where the chevroned strip is? But where *is* the finish line? at the second tower again? If it *is* here, then we are saying the start line is *also* the finish line, is that correct? You mean you come around the last bend *again*? and the laptime is shown *before* the finish line? Hmmm? 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)
The way it is is this...Papy goofed on the locations of the pit/ timing crew. They're in different spots in each of the tracks - some are close to the line, while others are some distance. The placement is totally unrealistic at some tracks (especially at the Glen), where the timing crews are at locations that make them vulnerable to impacts from the speeding cars. Wait 'til you see Rouen! =P Cheers! Marc

>But where *is* the finish line? at the second tower again? >If it *is* here, then we are saying the start line is *also* the finish >line, is that correct? Yes the start and finish line is the same. ( I thought is always is ) You are shown the laptime for the previous lap. After you cross the start/finish line, you don't get to know your laptime until just before you finish another lap. Remember this is 1967, and the guys need time to put the numbers on the pit board. Still confused? -Jan Otto

Hi Peter, > Hi, just wondered where *exactly* is the line that determines the *end* > of a lap at Monza? > The previous laptime comes up fairly soon after exiting the last coner > at the start of the straight, but the actual start line (chevroned) is > a lot further up the track by the end of the main stand on the right? The way i figure it works is that the pit board appears when you get within a certain distance of where your little friendly pit crew guy is standing with the board, and then the board disappears as you pass this little chap. At Watkins Glen the guy is standing just behind the start/finish line, which is all very nicely coincidental. However, At Monza the guy will be holding the board over the pit wall. But, since that chevroned line is the start/finish line, and that is quite a distance past the pit wall, that's why you're noticing quite a difference between when the pit board disappears to when your lap times get registered. If you really want to test it, do a lap but stop right before hte line, then press escape and see if the time shows, if not, just move forward a couple of metres to cross the line, then hit escape again. hope this helps, Grant.
The clock starts in T3 and then records the ET for the next 15 laps till T18! See? C'mon Pete, get it together mate! Sounds like a cronic case of not eating your carrots to me!

Goofed? I think they're fine. Perhaps not historically accurate, but the placement at, for example, WG, allows you to view the pitboard for the whole of the SF straight without it blocking your view of T1. Seems reasonable. Cheers! John
