How to get an audience for online racing

Proposal for spectator servers to broadcast online races

Christer Andersson proposed that sim developers add spectator servers so people could watch online races in real time with free cameras and a 'producer' view. Others added ideas such as crowd applause, team spotters and web broadcasts. A report that TransAm Racing would include spectating was said by Marc Nelson to be inaccurate.

online racing/leagues

Automated summary.

Me myself would really like to be able to see other sim racers race online in real time, so here goes my suggestion to all sim racing developers (Is there no stopping this guy, Ed's note). First we must have a server (server A) which act as a race server for the online race. Then we need another server (server B) which server A sends all necessary race information to. Now anyone who isn't taking part in the race should be able to view the race in real time by downloading a viewer (a mini version of the simulator) for free, starting the viewer and connecting to server B. Then anyone of the ongoing races can be chosen and watched in real time. The viewer should work like any replay function currently available in todays racing sims, thus you as a viewer can choose any camera anytime during a race. I know when I in near future will start to brag about my wins and poles in the online races everyone at my work would just love to see me loose :o). /Christer, I know you can do it and we would love the audience :o)

I was thinking about that also, it really is a great idea for Nascar3 maybe. One thing that I would like to see added is the ability (since in 3d) for you to move anywhere you like and view in any angle. This is know as skew for most. It would be cool to sit in the press box and watch the race at tally. :-) Chris http://cprtracks.cjb.net/

sometimes it' s more exciting to watch a sim race. Like with gp2 & ICR2. Krisstian
Christer, wouldn't it just be easier to watch the REAL race on REAL television? :o) -- Regards, Bruce. ----------
A simple copy of the sim would probably be enough. Being able to view in the replay section would be a must as well. That way we could choose who to watch and from what angle. An auto zoom feature to overtaking manoeuvres and accidents would of course be great.

Actually, I think you just sparked me into understanding FIA's decision to stop Ubi from having a good online version of F1RS Bruce. Given the choice, I would DEFINANTLY choose to watch a sim race driven online by well known and respected simmers over the real deal any day! Knowing the sim yourself and appreciating what's going on, not to mention probably knowing the drivers as well and having raced them before, would make for the grandest entertainment in sims, short of being a participant yourself, that I can think of!

Actually the viewer could show the race delayed with a couple of seconds, thus the viewer will have time to find moments and incidents to show. This view of the race could be called the "producer"-view. You would never miss any overtaking, incidents or moments in this view, unless they happen at the same time, then I guess the event which happens closer to the front gets chosen. You will of course also be able to save the whole race, to view it from any camera angle later. /Christer -- http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers". How about a possibility for the viewer to "applause" a given driver (pressing a button with the number of the car)? That would make it possible to hear cheers and shouts from the attendance after how many "applauses" you/we get (the racer, I take it for granted that you and I would race that race, Christer)! This would bring in the entertainment factor as well, because the most flashy driver would get the most applause and thus have higher spirits and charge! The possiblitities are endless, but in this case it would be wise to double our efforts on how to bring money into the sim racing business, so that we can race for more than glory ;-) I can imagine receiving a email with an offer to race at a given date and time and receiving starting money for it!!! Or how about building a league with simulation not only of the racing, but team orders, ranking, points, injuries, test drivers, development teams etc... This would attract the not-so-fast drivers as well, those interested in the tactics and stuff... I'd love to get accepted as test driver for one of the teams to prove my speed... The attended on-line race would be a thrill beyond imagination for my part, grud knows what pulse I would have on the starting line in grid pos2 alongside you Christer! ---Asgeir---

Its people like you that are ruining the sport of Nascar....keep it up and you won't have a sport in a few years....
Sooooo brilliant....Ive always thought this would be a fantasic thing for all simlover AND racinglovers, but i thought the idea was TO fanatic... ....well...I guess it wasnt ;) Thomas Heineman Christer Andersson skrev i meddelandet

I'm looking forward to outbrake you ;o). The applause will take up some bandwidth and I wonder if a real racer can hear the crowd? I would like some feedback on how many is currently watching the race, though, perhaps graphically shown in the stands? Empty stands no spectators... :o(. LOL. I thought you were gunna hit me with the "demand" arguement there, to which I was going to respond ....... well, you know the rest :)

I've actually found myself watching a GP2 race between AIs where I tried to resimulate the latest F1 race at Hockenheim. The racing was so close I sat and watched almost 20 laps in real time :o). I guess I will see a lot of online races as soon as this gets implemented :o). /Christer -- http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers". Absolutely, cool idea, like being one of the spectators :o). How about the ability to make spectator noice and be able to hear the other spectators noice? I would suggest to keep the first version as simple as possible, but not too simple :o). /Christer -- http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers". This feature could also bring the business of live on-line broadcasts of races, using something like a PointCast program to relay stats live to a webpage. (Someone might havbe to have a computer tied into the replay system and have a laptop to relay the info, or have the replay viewer be a Win95/98 app which sits on the desktop while someone could relay the info using another program) Possibilities for this are litterally endless. Another idea could be to a chat room on another server (So it doesn't slow down the race) so you can chat with anybody else in the stands. Hmm, ok, I think I need to start drinking caffeine free Mountain Dew once again. -- Travis Kallner ROAR Thunder Online Championship http://members.tripod.com/~modernknight98/roar.html
How about using like the sky view to allow people to sit and watch the race. Have it a choice for joing the network game. Spectator or Driver. May could do this so the game would not suffer. All the game would need to do is to send out the view it would not require any input back from the spectator. If the spectator is lagging they just have a jumpy view. Just thoughts on this.
I could also see a very cool interactive use for this down the road when bandwidth grows. Real team spotters. This would be very cool. To be able to have a teammate spot for you and count laps and let you know where EXACTLY the leaders are would be cool. Maybe then, even add the ability for the observer to act as a spotter/crew chief. Let that person manage what will be done to the car and let the driver race. Sorry, started rambling. This has been something that I thought would be cool for a long time. On Wed, 26 Aug 1998 19:39:47 GMT, Christer Andersson

Well Christer, maybee someone was reading your sugestion..... There seams to be a sim comming out, that allows you to watch multiplayer races......:) taken from Avault: http://www.avault.com/previews/trans3.asp - Choose from over 30 actual Trans-Am Racing teams, or create your own - Compete on 12 historically accurate road courses - Choose from 13 detailed, ready-to-race muscle cars - Compete against up to 16 players on the Internet or watch multiplayer races as a voyeur - Realistic automobile physics that provides six degrees of freedom - Realistic 3D collisions with real-time damage - Interactive 3D pit stops challenge your efficiency and hand-eye coordination - Seemingly endless car customizations - Neural net intelligence allows computer opponents to react with human-like characteristics, - including aggression, composure, and experience - Compete for season and manufacturer championships - Dynamic camera angles include apex tracking, driver glancing, chase, and driver Christer Andersson skrev i meddelandet
According to the folks at EAI (the ones doing the coding), much of the information written/posted on Trans-Am 68 72 at Avault is inaccurate. EAI and GTI are still undecided on the subject of online multiplay in regards to TA Racing, so I guess we'll see when released. However, the sim will have the usual IPX and TCP/IP stuff, and EAI's target is for at least 20 online~players per event. =) Cheers!
