Hi all,
Your opinions are needed . I have the original Indycar game from
Papyrus (I was actually a alpha/beta tester as well.) Although I may
have some bias towards Papyrus,. I'm finally looking for a new sim and
want to make an informed choice. My choices are narrowed down to CPR
and Cart. It looks like there is better graphics in CPR but the game
play/physics seem lacking. (Don't even mention Andretti Racing or
that ***game from ABC/IRL <G>).
Are there any reviews or comparisons on the web? Are there any new
sims on the way that are worth waiting for. (I've waited this long, a
few more months won't hurt.)
Thanks in advance
Dean.
CART Racing aka Indycar Racing 2 by Papyrus
I would say and I think the majority of the r.a.s. community agree that
Icr2, now renamed CART Racing, is still a great simulator, and does still
have a great _active_ community.
If I was on an desert island with the choice between C:PR and Icr2 as my
only racing simulator, I would choose CART Racing over the C:PR game ;-)
It's IMHO the most friendly-oriented piece of software I ever saw, with
great graphics (yes IMHO better in non-rendition than C:PR !), good
physics... I don't know why but Im always returning to race and race and
race over some "other" racing simulator I have. Heck you can find Cart
Racing for around 15$ US now with an incredible book that is shipped with.
Im not saying the C:PR is crap. Well it's more like "semi-crap". Too many
bad points, but still some good points. Great hotlapping product, and the
track editor will make it live longer than expected. Same goes for Icr2
(new tracks on the net).
Seriously, I would say go for the 2 of them, but if you only want 1 take
Cart Racing (a.k. Icr2)

from Papyrus though

Then you obviously have never driven Grand Prix 2 from Microprose. It is
by far the better simulator. Much more realistic AI, physics and the like.
Dont get me wrong.. I LOVE CART from Papyrus and have driven it faithfully
since the day it was released, but Grand Prix 2 is, technically and
aesthetically, a better simulator.

I have had GP2 since the day it
was released. I could not get to the the computer store quick enough! I had a 486/100 at
the time but soon upgraded to a p166 and still found that the Occ would just go too high
when I was in traffic (at acceptable fps - 16 say). This relegated it to a hotlapping sim
for me. Slow mo does not interest me at all!
For some reason it took me till about this time last year to finally get ICR2. My
first impression was that it was very easy on the road courses after GP2, but I mainly
bought it for the ovals. But whether it be ovals or not, I could race an entire field of
cars and maintain 30fps. Once you grow accustomed to this, GP2 is a joke!I have not even
thought about GP2 since! ICR2 is easily the most balanced and complete open wheeler sim to
date IMO. F1RS would have been except for the off track slowdown and pitiful menu's. And
the sound in F1RS is a joke!
GP2 is only now FULLY playable now that we have PII400's, 2 years after it's release.
Unlike GP2, I will not be rushing out to buy GP3. I will watch here with interest and if
Crammond produces a sim like GP2 in the CPU hunger dept then I'll be giving it a big miss!
So I say once again, "shame on the competition"!

right) but if you like Nascar2 then most (if not all) of the track
conversions come from Indy Car 2 (of the indy tracks used anyways) If you
want an updated version the Cart is the way to go.
If you want great and accurate physics and good scenery then CPR is the
way to go. Of course you need the machine (i have a p2 233 with a voodoo
card). It's an excellent hot lap game, but the AI is lacking.
Cart by Papyrus is ancient in game history. The graphics (on the enhanced
tracks only) are excellent and if you have a Rendition card the sense of
speed is awesome. BUT the game was made almost 3 years ago without at least 6
of the current tracks in Champ car racing (California, Motegi, Rio, St.
Louis, Houston, new Detroit, new Toronto, new Vancouver) or the new chassis
such as Swift and Toyota engines.
All in all, CPR is good for setting records on accurate tracks while Cart
is a good racer.
Hope this helps!!
Scott
Thanks to everyone who offered their opinion. I purchased ICR2 for
$15. Luckily I have access to an external zip drive at the office so
I download all kinds of stuff and loaded up my machine. Awesome.
Thank again.
