Are there any action games (like NFS or Test Drive) that actually have
realistic driving models? I have been consitantly disappointed with the
driving models of games like NFS 2, where, even in the "simulation" setting,
you get tons of understeer/push, but practically no oversteer. About the only
way to hang the tail out is to put it on the "arcade" realism setting and
slam *** the brakes. It seems like no action games ever model power-on or
throttle modulated oversteer.
The target I hold all these games up to is the old Atari "Hard Drivin" arcade
game. To me, this had a great driving model. You could go into a long, high
speed sweeping, and easily hang the tail out by modulating the throttle. You
could balance this nicely and do a four wheel drift through the corner, or
really hang the tail waaaaaay out and go sliding through the turn with lots of
opposite lock dialed in. Lifting too abruptly would cause a spin out. I
LOVED this. It was certainly harder to get used to then the typical frontend
plow that most arcade games modeled, but once you learned it, it was much more
fun!
Are there any PC action driving games that have a driving/physics model like
Hard Drving?

Viper Racing!!!
We like to think of it as the first Sports Car Simulation. It
features the most realistic physics engine of any racing game out.
Only GPL is in the same league.
It should hit the shelves around the first of November.

Now that's what I like to hear!
I haven't gone out and bought F1RS, and probably won't get GPL or NASCAR 3
simply due to the fact that I don't want to have to spend $2,000 + in order
to buy the hardware (PII, 400, Monster II, 128 meg of RAM, 8 Gig's of HD
space, etc) just to play a freaking video game!
I've got a P133, no MMX, 32 meg of standard non-edo ram, and a Viper
V330/Riva128 2d/3d video card, I've got 2 gig's of HD space total, and maybe
only 1 or 2 hundred megs free right now.
That's what I love about ICR2, NASCAR 1 (and 2 to some extent) GP2, etc...
Those games may not have the fantastic 3d support, car modeling, etc... but
they're VERY playable on my "meager" system (which was state of the art when
I bought it in 95')
Who needs a game that requires you to turn OFF all the graphics, etc... just
to get a decent frame rate????
Just my two cents, but I would venture to guess that a lot of other folks
are in the same situation I am, and don't want to spend several thousand
dollars just to play a game/sim !?

playable. My guess is that you can get such a system nowadays for app. $500.
Anyway, when ICR2 was released a lot of people were complaining about the fact
that one need such a big system! See, the best hardware now is obsolete in 5
years. Btw, It's funny you mention GP2, because if there is one sim poorly
coded, then it's GP2. It didn't run with max. gfx on the best system 2 years ago
and only now on the P2-400 it runs fine.

F1RS and GPL demo run beautifully on a P-233MMX with 32MB RAM and old
3Dfx Voodoo card. Hardly costs you $2000, or even half that.
And what exactly made you think those games require a 8GB hard drive?
Then don't. But if you think you really need to buy the latest 450MHz
P2 to play the games, you are so wrong. A P2-300 is pretty cheap now,
and runs all the games great. And my P233MMX is doing fine too.

major

Sounds like you need GPL? Yes I *know* it isn't an action driving game
(well it *is*? but not in the sense that he means!!!!)
Sounds like you also need to check an *arcade* forum......

Don't give up - you don't need to have those equipment. I have a AMD K6 200,
64 MB SDRAM and a Monster 3d (I)...ALL games run very smooth !
Also, man mailt sich...

tailslides! <G>
The ABC Interactive Indy Racing sim features some decent USAC Sprint
car tracks. They're a lot of fun, but they do tend to lack that
"tail-happiness" you're talking about (they DO slide around, though!).

Wrong newsgroup then.
Hmm. The news group name is "simulators" not "racing simulators." I think it
is possible to have a fun street driving game with a realistic driving model.
That's pretty much what "Hard Drivin'" was (if you ignore the somewhat
indestructable nature of the car). Bascially what I am saying is, why can't
there be a PC "action" game that has a driving model as good as the racing
sims? The two things aren't mutually exclusive. As far as I'm concerned, any
game that realistically portrays how a car reacts to control inputs and the
environments is a simulator.

You should try 'Motorhead'. Absolutely Brilliant. Just the kind of thing you
seem to be after, I'd say...
