WIN 98 has been out for a week. I need to re-build my system.
I race with F1RS and fly LB2 and others.
Is WIN 98 ready for prime time? Or should I stick with WIN 95?
Larry
Should racers upgrade to Windows 98?
Larry Lindstrom asked whether Windows 98 was ready for gaming. Replies were mixed: clean installs generally worked and some found it faster, while others reported broken drivers, joystick hat problems, sims such as GPL and ICR2 not running, and a heavier resource load. Many advised staying with Windows 95 OSR2 if it worked.

Well as much as I like Win98, in all honesty it screwed up LB2 so that I can
no longer use the hat switch on my Thrustmaster Stick. If you have a Stick
with a Hat Switch and you like to use it in LB2 then be prepared to loose
that feature if you upgrade to Win98. I am hoping that Janes will include a
fix for this in the LB2 patch (If ever). Good luck. At least other games
are not affected AFAIK.
Games that do seem to work ok with Win98 that I own and have tested are as
follows: LB Gold, FA18 Korea, Jedi Knight, FS98, MOTS, AWIII, Janes FA,
Moto Racer, Red Alert & add on's, Quake 2, MTM2, F15, Descent II, Outlaws,
Unreal and a few more.
The default drivers that Win98 installed for my Monster3D and Viper 330 seem
to work ok but AW3 doesn't want to display map text with the Riva drivers.
My 3Dfx has no problem with that. Things just keep getting more and more
complicated. Oh well, maybe if I get a new USB Joystick, my LB2/Hat Switch
problem will disappear. Who knows.
Haha, that depends on who you ask :-) If you do decide to go to Win98...
format that drive and install it fresh and clean. Upgrading to Win98
leaves a lot of garbage*** around. I've not had any problems with
it, even on NROS, so I'd say go for it. Just do a backup hehe.

Well, I had some real problems when I tried installing it over Win95,
but after doing a clean install, everything seems peachy. It runs
thing fairly well, as long as you dump the active stuff. However, if
your 95 is running well, you might just want to stay put.

It seems to work just fine for me. I formatted the hard drive and did
a clean install, and I've been running fine for 2 weeks. I got it
'cause I wanted FAT32. I now have a 4.8 gig hd, all as drive "C", and
it seems to run the drive a little faster, too.

You may just want to wait until Microsoft releases their 1st Service Pack
(scheduled "sometime later on in the year") as it seems to be a ***shoot if
your system is going to like the upgrade or not.
If you are not running the OSR2 version of Win '95, then you might want to
consider taking your chances as the FAT32 feature will help you free up alot of
disk-space. Otherwise, I would probably say to sit tight and wait for that 1st
Service Pack to come out before messing with your operating system.
However if you just want to throw caution to the wind. Make sure that
motherboard manufacturer says that everything is Win'98 friendly (otherwise you
will have to do a BIOS update if available) and that all your drivers are
kosher as well :-)

As with any software, don't go with the first release. I'm already
hearing a lot bad about Win98. Wait a year untill the patches and
updates come out. After all, remember the premier showing Gates hade of
Win98. It crashed the computer!
Remember, a lot of the experts whom reviewed Win98 sugested that if you
have Win95 it would not be much of an advantage to invest in windows98.
>WIN 98 has been out for a week. I need to re-build my system.

My Win95 installation dated back to the beta of the original version,
and I'd never done a clean reinstallation. So I desperately needed a
clean new OS, and I couldn't see reinstalling the original OSR1.
I did a clean install of Win98, and it took me a weekend to get
everything sorted out. I couldn't get my Zoom 56kflex internal modem
to work (I solved this by shuffling Com ports between the modem and my
mouse). Direct3D games kept crashing on my Righteous3D (I solved this
by using Orchid's drivers, not the Win98 drivers). And of course I
had to reinstall most of my software.
Now everything works, including my Saitek X36/PC-Dash controllers.
F-15, Longbow 2, iF-16, M1TP2, SM's Gettysburg, CivII, Battlezone,
Descent Freespace, and Links98 are the games I've played (or at least
tested since re-installing), and they all run fine, as do all of my
productivity applications.
Win98 is performing much better than my old Win95 installation did.
Converting to Fat32 increased my available disk space by about 25%.
The OS starts up and shuts down considerably faster. There are a few
minor features that are handy, and one major one -- multiple monitor
support -- that I wish I could use (but my system has no more IRQ's to
devote to another video card).
The improvements are generally minor, though, and the performance
benefits are as compared to an old Win95 installation on a jalopy of a
P200MMX. My family's system -- also a P200MMX, but in a much newer
chassis and with Win95 OSR2 installed -- performs just as well (or
better), and has most of the same functionality. I will definitely
*not* do a Win98 update on that system unless something forces me to.
Win98 is not a major upgrade. If you have Win95 OSR1, though, I think
it's worthwhile. If you have OSR2, then probably not.
I'd recommend a clean install. And plan to spend some time on it.

A couple of weeks ago I saw Mr. Bill pushing WIN 98.
He was standing in front of a list of the four or five
best reasons to get WIN 98. One was that WIN 95 has
3000 bugs.
WIN 95 was broken when it hit the CD. I guess the
question is, how broken is WIN 98?
My programs are running in about 20 Solaris and
SCO boxes around the world, I've heard of one or
two crashes in four years. And these are critical
tasks, I would have heard.
How many times has your WIN 95 crashed this week?
I've lost count. I have OSR2, the new USB version.
This isn't THAT big a deal, it's not like I'm
betting my business on WIN95. After a fresh recovery
from tape, I can run for a day, then one crash, might
be F1RS blue screen, or Netscape freeze, and a hard
reboot with Scandisk, then it starts to get more
frequent. Each crash/hard reboot/Scandisk seems to
weaken the flimsy foundation until I can't get through
a race or a flight. Then it's time for a recovery
from tape.
Larry
I want to thank everybody who responded. I don't really have
two days to dedicate to getting WIN 98 working, WIN 95 OSR2 is
close enough.
Maybe you can save me from re-building WIN 95 from scratch.
This should go to one of the WIN 95 newsgroups, but we're
friends here, so I'll run it by you first.
My problem is that I have two SCSI drives as C: and D:. My
CD is E:. The WIN 95 partitions for these drives, which are
shared with Solaris, are 1 and 2 GIG. C: is my "System" drive,
and D: is my "Sim" drive. As you know, 2 GIGs ain't what it
used to be, and I'm already removing this sim to add that sim.
Solaris likes to have multiple drives working at the same
time, so I added a third drive. This is one of those 9 GIG
monsters, so I have some spare room for sims. When I try to
use this, I thought my CD would be bumped to F:, and my new
drive would assume the name E:. No such luck. It just
doesn't seem to work.
So I'm planning to rebuild WIN 95, from scratch, with the
new drive all set up. I wouldn't need to do this if I could
re-name my CD "F:".
Does anybody know how to do this?
Thanks
Larry

Personally I would wait about 2 or so months until they work all the bugs
that haven't been found yet. Also I've been playing with it on the
computers at work and find that with 64mb of ram it is a little slow so
I'd suggest doubling that so that it won't slow down your games any.
At work we are running a 200mhz system.
I also don't subscribe to the internet (make you wonder how I'm here,
explian it in a bit.), so I won't be able to download any patches that
come out and figure that it MS is anything like the canadian Government
when it comes to doing things their way, I would have to wait about a
month for them to mail me the patch.
This is just my opinion, not an attack at MicroSoft or the Canadian
government.

I would suggest you stick with with Win95 simply because I don't believe
that there are enough advances to make it worthwhile (just an opinion).
Unless you have been having great difficulties with Win95, you probably
won't get much benefit.

There are advantages and disadvantages with each way you do it. These new
drives are so large that without FAT32 you have to do so many partitions its
ridiculous. My biggest problem with that many partitions is the fact that
it really messes with network drive mappings. This wouldn't be a problem on
most home PC's, but in a networked environment it can cause alot of
headaches.

a full disk image of your system. I say this because I would have loved to
just dump it and give it back to the store, but it was too late, the problem
was already done.
What happened was the they took all my drivers, (nearly every single one)
and replaced them with 'newer' microsoft version. Result: dead sound card,
dead modem, dead printing, DEAD CD (in the middle of the install it started
thinking my CD was drive c:\[something] when it has been F: for several
months!!!), what else... anyway, I finally got everything installed again.
I find that windows doesn't forget my joystick anymore, (it used to say 'not
connected' after coming out of sleep mode, but I always play on a fresh
reboot anyway) and that's the big advantage. I really think the beta's of
win98 worked soooo much better than the full version. I didn't have any
problems with the drivers and whatnot.
Generally speaking I find the interface of win 98 much more user friendly,
powerful and intuitive, but what a price!

I just installed 98 a few hours ago, and after the nightmare I had that was
a 95+IE4 combo I have to say that 98 is a welcome relief. I've put it
through its paces and it certainly seems to be much more stable than 95.
However, If you're running 95 with no probs I wouldn't recommend upgrading
just yet, better to wait and see.
I have to agree with you about 98 being slower than 95. On my P200 with
64meg SDRAM it is considerably slower than 95 - "works better and plays
better" maybe... but at a cost.

I thought of this, but when I went to convert to FAT32 Win 98 informed me

it.

Sorry about that -
The one problem I have had upgrading to Win 98 was that Outlook Express hung
after posting a message. I did't realise the messages has actually got
posted until a bit later (after I had re-installed Outlook Express) and
there were four messages in a row.
Re-installing Outlook Express fixed the problem.

My Win 98 experience:
1. It installed nicely on a new machine. The startup floppy will be
useful, as it has wonderful generic drivers to run CD-ROMs, etc.
2. Some operations seem a little more intuitive. My T1 installed
easily. Ditto my CD-ROM changer and LS-120 floppy.
3. It won't run the GPL demo or ICR2 (sigh).
4. When I tried the instructions to patch GPL I screwed up my system.
5. Win98 had great tools to help me fix 4.
I'm sold. Bring on the final version of GPL! I can live
without ICR2.

Don't numbers 3 and 4 bother you just a little? If those two games won't
work, number 1 seems a little suspect as far as nicely goes. I would be

Your computer will have a hernea. Now try the same on NT or equivelent

Not agree.
It is easier to change drivers in Win98.
In Win95 it is very difficult to change drivers, you have to "update
existing" driver, you can not (easy) change to -say older driver.
In Win98 you can (easy). And the Win98 ("Norway version") don't ask twice
about the drivers location.

I use Win95 on a P233MMX/64MB. Right now I'm using three different
instances of Forte Agent newsreader (downloading newsgroups from three
different news servers), Exceed FTP (a FTP client with graphical user
interface) downloading SIN demo for me, and five MSIE 3.02 windows in
different URLs, occasionally glansing them through and loading new
pages. Works fine here as I'm writing this message. Oh and there's
some other stuff too there, like GetRight FTP utility downloading some
games from daves classics.
At work I use a P200MMX/64MB with NT4.0, and compared to it this runs
fine when I do about the same on it. You probably expect everything to
be like in molasses now here, but that isn't the case (compared to
that NT box).
HOWEVER, the real difference IMHO is that my Win95 machine can crash
much more easily, especially when banging the limits like now. It
doesn't happen that often, but sometimes anyway, while so far I have
managed to crash my NT machine only once to a state where I had to
press the reset button (even Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't do anything). Oh and
it was Netscape which was able to crash my NT box. :)

You could buy a third party product like Powerquest's Partition Magic.
This would allow you to change to partition to FAT16 without
destroying the data. You could then uninstall.
Hmm... Did you have Win95 OSR2? You may be ok with FAT32.
Best of luck.

Win95 OSR2 works fine with FAT32... I've already uninstalled 98 and

My brother has WinNT 4.0 and i'm still with Win95. I can't believe how fast
32-bit programs run under NT 4.0 with a 32-bit optimized CPU like the Pentium
Pro and Pentium II. Shesh, i can run Quake2 at 800x600 with no 3D acceleration
and it runs around 15-20fps. Even with my overclocked P233 to P292 i can't
manage more than 6-7fps at that resolution.
I will thank the stars when i upgrade in two years...WinNT 5.0 (DX6!!!), Dual
CPU support. When you want to increase the performance, just pop in another
CPU. No more ripping out motherboards every 12 months. :-)

better luck when I decided to just let it go ahead and install whatever the

but less bothersome. My first attempt at trying to force 98 to take the

What I don't understand is why someone would take the time to post something
so petty, whilst adding absolutely nothing constructive to the thread
themselves. It's all a bit sad really.
Also I fail to see how - from what I posted earlier - one could conclude that
I am so obviously an "idiot". I make my living with my computer (digital

This behaviour first happened to me with OSR2 - but you can get around it.
When changing drivers go to select a driver from database or list? then
choose
your older driver from the list that you want to use and show the way to
where
its driver files are extracted.
If you hadn't installed the older driver first before the newer driver you
might not be able to do
this - If you have the DirectX5 SDKit you can force overwrite all drivers
and then you'll
be able to reinstall all your drivers old to newest.
It is a pain in the arse but better than reformatting.
I got a 15% better frame rate with timedemo 0.2 in unreal with high
detail textures after installing W98- but only a 5% improvement with low
detail
textures. Win 98 seems to always creates a virtual swap file even if you
have free RAM!!
I found setting a maximum vcache limit removed occasional pauses in unreal.
Why 98
works so much better with detail textures has something to do with the
caching it uses.
15% better with high detail textures on a 8Mb V^2- I love W98 for that.

I just realized I better explain myself before something bad happens.
1. You have XYZ Wonder Card 3d Original Drivers installed....now Wonder
Card announces a new Driver that promises 4,000% improvement for your

originally installed the driver the inf of that particular driver was
stored for reference in as far as I know 2 places. Both of these places
reside in your Windows folder (my case Win98 but thats another sad long
story...) anywho....one is "config folder" the other is called in a
spate of brilliance by Microsoft the " INF folder"...(oh my somebody
smart got by the personnel department at MS).... Now Ive found that the
only realiable way to insure the correct installation of drivers is for
me to first delete both inf files regarding the particular
driver...(easy to find since it usually goes by the name of the inf
found in your set of new drivers....look inside the package containing
the drivers ie exe file zip file or the like)....I delete both these inf
files then I go to device manager and select the device and do
properties. Select update driver and browse to the folder you have your
new set of drivers in.....then select next...and hopefully Uncle Winky's
brand new broken OS will find them and correctly install them....fun fun
fun....

PS...btw many people are not understanding that the Voodoo2 reference
drivers are attempting to outsmart many by putting variables in
different area's...then if you use something like tweakit....(not a good
idea btw) it also puts more variables in different areas...now you have
effectively lost control of your Voodoo2 card...boy is that fun.
Actually it pisses me off tremendously....I couldnt figure out why I had
all of a sudden lost control of my Gamma Settings...anyways I will post
an article about this tonight under an original header. 3dfx Voodoo 2
has disappointed me with those type of shenanigans...

Hmmm I don't seem to have this problem. It just tells me my current
might be better and ask if I'm sure. I say yep and away it goes.
course mybe I just never notice it going back , I'll have to check.
I always do a select form list then browse to the folder. Is this how
you do it ?

I learned that one a long time ago.
I think another way is to go into safe mode and then device manager.
When in safe mode it shows all devices you have had installed (I
believe it is listing the inf files it as.) if you delete the ones you
don't really have install it rebuilds the data base.

Wow, sorry to hear you guys had so much trouble. WIN98 installed without
a hitch. All-in-all, I like the upgrade. If it's worth the $89 is
subjective. I wonder what about your setups that caused so much
consternation? I guess we will never know. Do you guys have anything ***
in your systems (by *** I mean things that outside the norm for sim
junkie add-ons)?
Personally, I like IE4 and don't mind the integration at all. I do have
Netscape 4x and use it as well. I think Outlook express is a great
e-mail/news reader suite. The Windows Update function is a nice touch. I
don't seem to have the slow down that some have with the active desktop
turned on. I do think adding the active channels to your desktop is junk as
well as the channels bar - hogs up way to much desktop space as well as
covers up your background.
I think what is amazing is that MS has sold something like 1.5 million
copies so far.
Food for thought. :)
