F1RS - I need help with a steering problem...

8 posts by 5 people · 19 Jun 1998 - 22 Jun 1998

I have a very annoying problem in F1RS. At the end of most strait aways just as i start to brake the car will dive to the left, and skid out of control. The only parallel I can draw is when one time a car came out of the pits and ran right into my side pod... that's how fast and hard the movement to the left is. Machine: Pentium 233, Creative Labs 3D blaster 12meg (voodoo 2), Fighterstick and CH pedals, 32megs SDRAM. What I have tried: - re-calabrating the joystick and Pedals. (Although it appears to work fine through out the rest of F1RS and other Games) - Turning down the visual detail level. (Two notches on the Eye candy scale and the sky and replays are turned off.) Anybody have any suggestions? Would a ACM or Gamecard III help? Perhaps it's a bug? Thank You Darren S.

Darren, Sounds like a problem I have with my GP1 wheel. At random points (usually as I'm approaching a turn) the wheel will twitch, quite often sending me off the track. This problem makes GP2 virtually unplayable as you never know when it's going to happen. I got the tmscope utility and found that all three pots spike simultaneously. I took the wheel back to the store but they couldn't reproduce the problem. It was rock steady on their machine. Pat Dotson's suggestion is below, which I haven't tried yet. And BTW you should uncheck the "poll with interrupts" box in the conroller screen of Win95. This was Thrustmasters' suggestion. If anyone from Thrustmaster is listening, have you got any other suggestions ?? Please. Thanks. Pat Dotson said: -- Andrew Fielden. UK.

Try just sitting on the track and just see if your front tires twitch. Also try hitting the brakes... If they do twitch uncontrollably then you have a hardware problem somewhere. -- Header intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

I have experienced the same, very frustating, problem, too. I have fought with this problem for a couple of weeks now, and now I think I have found a cause for this problem. I have a TM GP-1, and experienced very severe twitches, especially with F1RS and N.I.C.E. 2 demo. They were practically unplayable. So I reinstalled about everything: DirectX, gameport drivers, game software, you'd name it. I tweaked BIOS settings, cleaned the pots, resoldered the wires... Nothing helped. Then I started to wonder why the MS Game Controllers window in Control Panel sometimes during the testing stopped responding with the error message "You're conroller is not connected correctly. Retry?" (or something like that). TM ProPanel sometimes just stopped responding. The problem was that springlike wire which connects the wheels gas/brake levers and two buttons to the rest of the controller case. It was quite loose and the turning of the wheel simply disconnects the connector occasionally, thus making those awful twitches. So I taped the connector really tight to the contoller case and that was it. My contoller now works perfectly! For some of you, this could be a solution for unbearable twitching problems. So check your wires for disconnections. ***************************************************** Tuomas Koskela, Ph.Lic. I've had the same problem with my GP1. It's the "Plug" that plugs the wheel into the base unit ! Even though I have mine taped, It still works itself out so I check it every couple of days ! Tim

I am going to try the utility you mention. Done. I tried this and it appeared to fix the problem, however ten or so laps later it was back although much less severe. Now the Car twitches off maybe once every second or third lap. So it's ok to practice with, but racing is out of the question. I have one more thing to try. Tuomas Koskela from this news group had a problem which was caused by a loose wire inside his GP1, so I guess I'll try to see if that is a problem. Thanks for your help Darren S.

Greg, yes I do see this behaviour. I believe the problem is related to my machine, since the problem could not be reproduced at the store. Please elaborate on how you solved the problem. I'm using a SB16 PCI sound card. Note to Tim: I'm aware that the connector can work lose from the base unit, but that's not the cause of this problem. -- Andrew Fielden. UK.
