GPL demo lap times at Watkins Glen

Players shared Watkins Glen lap times from the GPL demo, from 1:25 for beginners to George Sandman's then-record 1:06.35 posted on The Apex fastlap board. Tips included using the Lotus, braking later and harder into turn 4, adding throttle after braking, and getting a wheel rather than a joystick.

Hi. I'm curious as to what sort of lap times people have gotten. My best sofar is 1:16.280 on a verrrry carrreful lap in the Lotus. That's with all help turned off and a joystick. 1 little tip. If you're having a hard time, try driving the Anglo-American. The Lotus is awfully tricky. -AAW

Check out the Grand Prix Legends page at the APEX http://gpl.gamestats.com They have an extensive fastlap board, broken down into the different car classes (F1, F2, F3). Not sure what the fastest time is currently, but I know it is at least a 1:06.** in the F1, so it looks like you have a lot of practicing to do to keep up. Here's a tip.. download some of the replays, and compare them to yours. See where one driver gains time on you, and try to take his lines around the course. Guaranteed to improve your lap times!! doktorB >Hi. At the APEX-Grand Prix Legends H.Q web site the lap record so far is in the 1:06`s with no help, but using wheel and pedals. Check it out at http://gpl.gamestats.com/

I have the Record right now at 1:06.35 in a Lotus using a T-2 Wheel and pedals. George Sandman

Sounds like good diplomacy to me. Make the Brits think they are British and the Yanks think they're American.

My best so far is in the Anglo-American Racer and absolutely pushing the car around the track I've got a 1'13.65 but as soon as I've posted it, twice the demo has reset the computer back to win '95. The best consistent laps (that is without spinning are around 1'15.5 - 1'17. Matt

Finally! Someone with an ordinary time who's not afraid to post it! The rest of you are a bunch of cowards. :) I've since done 1:12.08 in the Lotus, but I don't think I could top your time in the Eagle.

I think the fastest time posted on the internet so far is around 1:06:5? I am consistently in the 1:10's & 1:11's most of the time though. I seemed to make gradual progress as time passed with GPL, (my first full lap without crashing was 1:40) but after getting sub 1:10 a while back, I have since made no further progress at all? Keep practising..... 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

I was at 1:12 for the longest time; then I took a look at George 's replay and noticed that he was braking a lot later and a LOT harder going into turn 4. I also figured out that one needs to feed in a little throttle after braking before turns 4, 6 and 8, otherwise the back-end comes right around. With these changes I immediately saw an improvement to 1:10, with consistent 1:11's and 1:12's. Nothing to brag about, but I thought the overnight 2 second improvement was worth mentioning. Now I just have to break into the single digits. Todd >Finally! Thanks for the tips, I am still at 1:13 with the Lotus. I will see if I can Make 2-3 seconds improvement during the weekend:-) -Jan Otto

Hey guys I'm still struggling with GPL.... How much practice does it take to get down to the sub 1:15's time ? Tim

My personal best is still 1:10:04, and has been for the last two weeks due to lack of seat time. It used to be 1:12:something until I asked for driving instructions here, and got a lot of very helpful replies. As I see it, the best pieces of general advice are: - Use the Lotus. When I first installed the demo, I found the Lotus undrivable and chose the Eagle, then the Brabham. Both are great for getting a feel of the track. But once you have mastered the basics, they don't have enough power for really quick laptimes. When I, reluctantly, turned to the Lotus again, I was surprised that it is actually easier to drive quickly than the other two cars once you know approximately what you're doing. :) - Go to one of the GPL sites (gpl.gamestats.com , I believe) and download the hotlaps posted there. See what the really quick guys are doing. I watched several replays a few times, both with animated driver's arms (to see the steering input) and without (to see exactly where they change gears). I found out that one can get through turns 6 and 7 a lot faster than I was doing. Once you know what is possible, odds are you can replicate it for yourself. -- Wolfgang Preiss \ E-mail copies of replies to this posting are welcome. Uni des Saarlands \ and U.S. law. (This is no big deal, but since I know it can only get better I'll post it anyway.) My best time for Watkins Glen is 1:17:28 on GP3 in the Repco-Brabham. (my other GP times are slower..) with a F-16 joystick, damage off (duh), help off I've been driving the Eagle a lot lately and I could've sworn I've hit a 1:16, but now it's on to the Lotus to turn in some real lap times to keep up with you guys. I've spent so many hours and GP2 and ICR2 that I know I can beat these horrible times, it's just that the cars in GPL are so fun to drive. This driving model Rocks!! I put up with sliding off every other lap just because it feels 'fair. In GP2 (my favorite) many times I'd hit a spot of grass and instantly spin, but when one of my four wheels locks up in GPL, or I drift a little too far out from leaning on the throttle and I lose traction I'm no longer as mad or frustrated because GPL feels so real. Time to break down and buy a Thomas wheel and VooDoo2. see ya Rae

Hi Peter I've done around 20 hours so far and I've just broken my record of 1.10.05 and got 1.09.60 in the Eagle (YES YES YES :) And as far a GP goes, me and a couple mates raced every friday night over 6 years (F1GP Amiga to GP2), thats about 5 hours worth each night, minus say 4 fridays per year, for piss-ups'n'stuff. So that works out too around 1440 hours. And our next race is in about 10 minutes, well after pratice'n'stuff :) Can anyone top that :) And..... NEVER STOP!!!!!! :) -- Vincent O

When I started GPL I found the G2 and GP1 cars extremely difficult. Could rarely complete a lap! Was using a joystick and went thru all kinds of jyrations trying to calibrate it to be less sensitive. Mike Carver gave me some help and also suggested a wheel. I got a Thrustmaster GP1 wheel and with it dropped 3 seconds almost right away. Then I eliminated traction aid and dropped another second. By this time I was in the 1:11 range. Then I dropped automatic shift and gained more time. My best lap now is 1:08.98. I ordered a TSW and hope that will chop another second, and when I smooth up some more and drop antilock brakes, I have some hope of getting into the 1:06s. Thanx to Mike Carver, and hope this helps others. Sam Senior, Portland, Oregon

I finally got it up and running for more than a lap or two a week, today. I will also post this slow time-GP3 Eagle 1:25:55. I will practice more and(fingers crossed) get better. BTW thanks to all for the hints posted. No helps. Russ the next lap I spun but still pulled a 1:29:xx
