GTR cockpit screenshots spark gauge debate

New screenshots of SimBin's GTR prompted Badmuther to complain about digital gauges. Others showed that modern FIA GT race cars use digital dash units, noting that his counterexample was a 1994 road car interior. The thread also shared a GTR sound sample and discussed pedal and gearbox designs in GT cars.

Well still no analog gauges the same digital gauges as in their mod. It kinda of ruins it for me.
> Well still no analog gauges the same digital gauges as in their mod. > It kinda of ruins it for me. I can't find any cockpit screenshots. You're not just talking about the HUD in the arcade mode screen shot are you? The screenshots look superb so far. It's nice to see a far more natural looking colour palette than the old mods had.
> Well still no analog gauges the same digital gauges as in their mod. > It kinda of ruins it for me. http://www.bhmotorsports.com/sims/GTR/screenshots/12.jpg OK, I found it. I hate to break it to you, but real GT cars don't have analogue gauges. Nor do V8 Supercars or European Touring cars. Why on earth would it matter anyway? I'm not sure why Nascars have analogue gauges. I guess rednecks aren't known for being electronically savvy. =D <ducks>

Lotus, vipers most all have analog gauges come to think of it name a GTR car that don't.
If what you say is true about the analog guages, I don't know why the developers would have made them digital instead. They're obviously wanting to recreate the whole thing as accurately as possible. They have access to the cars.. they know what they're doing. Implementing analog guages isn't really harder to do.. if they did digital, maybe the displays are digital? hmmm first clue...1994. 2nd clue...radio/air conditioning. 3rd clue...2point safetybelts. 4th clue Upolstered seats, carpeting, floormats. This my friend is a street car, and an OLD one at that. It can in NO WAY be used as justification of what kind of dashboard components are used in 2003 FIA GT racing vehicles. You could have made just as much logic with two pictures of a DUCK and CHURCH and said they were equal. Now I for one do not have access to FIA GT racing cars. But darnit all, the SBDT AE boys do. I would imagine they would have at least photos of the privateer team of Henrik Roos.(their partner) so perhaps somebody else here can link us some photos of 2003 cockpits. And preferably more than just one team, brand, or class. dave henrie

Now the real question is. Does the rpm lights go up one at a time or in 4 clumped groups like f1c et al? If each individual bar lights up, then you have a true analog guage with digital reports. dave henrie

If *anyone* is committed to realism its SBDT - and they do have direct access to the current FIA GT tour cars. I think I'll trust thier vision of the car interiors ;). Kendt

I'm slightly confused by this talk of analogue dashboards, am I right in thinking that any cockpit which uses dials and gauges won't have the means to gather accurate telemetry? ++ Fillyourboots

I haven't seen the GTR feature set to know if they plan on using telemtry. But the type of guage(or clocks as some Euro's might say) would not impede the gathering and saving of telemetry. It's more of a visual imersion item than anything else. dave henrie

Does anyone know if this is the way it's done in all FIA GT cars? And are they able to shift (up) without the clutch?

I would imagine the pedals of most purpose built racing cars are swiveled from the floor, FIA GT cars being no exception and I don't know about this season, but up until last some cars featured sequential gearboxes, while others had an H-pattern style shiter. Note the picture is one of the GT category in the ALMS series, which do have a slightly different technical spec than the FIA GT series. > And are they able to shift (up) without the clutch? Yes. I don't know if they're allowed semi-automatic shifting, but it can be done, even "manually". Jan. =---

I recall an interview with Johnny O'Connell last season where he was talking about the then-new paddle shifters in the Corvette. All the other GTS cars I've seen up close (including the Prodrive Ferraris) use sequential boxes and an ignition cutout on the shifter so they can upshift without lifting or using the clutch. SB
