Hi, I'm considering upgrading my CPU from an 133Mhz Pentium to either a 166mmx or 200mmx Pentium. Would there be much performance difference between the 166 or 200?. I know these processors are a bit dated now but I am doing this on a tight budget and any increase in performance has got to be better. --- Cheers Andy.... Remove NOSPAM for correct Email address. There is no that much performance difference between an Intel P166 and a P200. But there is even less price difference. So get the P200. Better yet, If your mb supports MMX, get a P233MMX. And if you have a 3dfx card, that will help alot, also.

Since you are on a tight budget, it would seem that a move from 133 to 166mmx is not quite worth the move. Therefore, if you are looking for some more gump I would suggest at least going for the 200mmx. Also depending on your computing needs look into a 3d accelerator card (if you don't already have one). For Papyrus titles go for a used Rendition (still thinking budget) or for other sims and future Papy titles try to rustle up a used Voodoo1 3DFX card. If you don't have a 3d accelerator card the peformance increase with one should be even better than the jump to a "slightly" faster CPU. Best bet is to combine the card and the 200mmx CPU. -- **************************** Michael E. Andy, Bang for the buck, I would not even consider the P/166 or P/200. With the falling original Pentium prices you can pick up a P/233 MMX for a song. Throw in about 64 megs of EDO RAM for another sixty to seventy five bucks (of course, you may have some already,) add a Voodoo 1 card, and you, my man, are ready to go racing! Throw in Good advice except you are assuming he will be able to get 233mhz out of his current MB. In fact he most likely cannot. I cannot go higher than 200mhz (66mhz x3). So if you know of a way to do this when your MB only supports a 50mhz, 60mhz or 66mhz bus and a maximum 3x multiplication jumper setting, please let me know. I would like to get a 233mhz also. But I know it is impossible without putting in a new MB (motherboard) also. Also if he cannot use a normal MMX cpu, he should get the 200MMX UPGRADE cpu. It will pop in a normal pentium socket, and is only slightly more expensive. You see if he has a P5-133 now, his MB most likely doesn't support MMX voltages either. And finially, a 3dfx is a must. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. >about 64 megs of EDO RAM for another sixty to seventy five bucks (of course, you >may have some already,) add a Voodoo 1 card, and you, my man, are ready to go >racing! Buy a 166 and overclock it to 200, you will then get even more bang for your buck? 8-) *Peter* 8-) (NB: remove asterix to e-mail)

Many if not most of the boards that support P5/200MMX will support the the 233MMX CPU by setting the multiplier to 1.5 X 66mhz, the CPU itself will adjust internally to 3.5 times. The ASUS T2P4 is one such motherboard, check with your MB manufacturer's website to see if yours does. But your are right that his MB may not support it simply because it doesn't support the neccessary voltage for MMX CPU's. Of course Socket 7 MB's are dirt cheap now so that is another option even for someone on a tight budget. Dan.

Not much difference - 10% maybe. Its more important you have a 3dfx card. Not worth it without one. Also, be sure to overclock your cpu at least from 166 to 200 or 200 to 233. Its quite safe with Intel cpu's provided you use a fan/heatsink with it. I have a 166MMX overclocked to 200 and have no problems, but the difference is not that noticeable.

Interesting. My MB supports 75MHz, which gives a maximum of 75*3 = 225MHz, which is why I haven't considered the P233MMX. I've never heard of this "internal adjustment". My MB manual simply states the CPU speeds which it supports (up to 200MHz). Does this mean a P233MMX would be a waste of money, when I can O/C a P200 to 225 ? BTW I have a QDI Explorer board which does support dual voltage for MMX. -- UK.
Except you can't overclock the new Pentium processors...Well, by in- creasing the bus speed yes, but not the multiplier. A new P166 won't run as 3x66MHz, but it can run as 2.5x83MHz = 208MHz. Tuffe
