Complaints about outsourced call centres
An off-topic thread about telemarketers and call centres moved to India drew complaints from UK and US posters. Some blamed corporations rather than the workers, while others drifted into politics about NAFTA and tax policy.

It's happening in the UK as well mate, loads of call centres for great UK
companies like British Telecom, BP etc have moved call centres to India.
They have to work odd hours so that when they phone here it is around the
time of Eastenders or Coronation Street, and they also have to learn
background information about our viewing habits i.e the characters of
Eastenders etc. and...AND they give their name as good old John Smith or
Jane Williams or something British (or American). Fair play to them , they
are only doing a job but it's, as you say, greedy corporations trying to
save a few pennies.

It's not so much that I am annoyed about them calling, I just don't like
them trying to pass themselves off with fake British sounding names as if it
would make us feel better and the fact the they are representing British
firms but calling from India.
I don't watch Corrie, I'm a neighbours man myself ;-)

Where you/we should complain are THE corporations.
Cancel the service and state clearly the reason is outsourcing and stick
with a local guy.
Because corporate fascism in western world is hardly different from the
Nazi fascism.
In 1930's it was first exterminate all jews, then gypsies, then slavs
... and we all (whoever we are) sit and watch.
One day they decide to remove us - we're all alone and in minority to
put up any resistance.
Not much different today, first IT companies, then telecom comapnies,
then those two both together make ground to "sell" facilities
(outsource) other businesses. And what happens, we all lose our jobs
and THE corporation proudly announces net profit of $ 4 billion, 31% up
on last year's one. And the economy seems to be growing so fine ...
Yeah, right !

Maybe if we re-elect Bush they'll outsource the White House staff to
India.

I forget when GATT happened, but NAFTA was all ready to go when Sr was
still in office.
In any case, giving tax breaks to corporations so they can hire more
cheap labor in other countries seems to be something both parties
support.
