GPL Problem.

12 posts by 10 people · 16 Apr 1998 - 19 Apr 1998

I have a few problems with GPL and a few good things. Goods. 1) I like the physics model. Runs pretty good. See bads why pretty. 2) Joystick code. I like the real joystick code in the game. I has to change sides of the POT in my T1 and now all WIN95 games run left and right backwards. Bads. 1) Needs windows 95. Bad move. Windows 95 is a piece of shit. DOS worked fine. Like N2. That worked well in WIN95. 2) Non 3D cards play like crap. I get 5+ fps on a P180 w/96 meg ram. I have a M3DII on order but Diamond is dragging it ass and I hear GPL doesn't support it anyway so well see about this one. 3) Whats with the arms in the sim. Like my arms are not enough I need two more. I look at it this way. I have a wheel and two arms so why spend CPU time drawing other for me. Part of the prob with the fps. All in all seems like fun but I won't know until I figure out how to get a frame rate I can live with. I'll stick with N2 till the problems are worked out. PS. PAPY..... Spend time on the fps and skip the drawing of not need items. Arms, wheel, shifter..... You are on the correct road lets stay there... Bill.

Since the new game engine by Papyrus is completly different than on previous titles, it was now time in the developpment timeline that GPL made it Win95 only. It's the reality of the year 1998. DOS, even with all the good points of it, it's slowly dying. There is no advantage for Papyrus to port it into DOS, IMHO. Also, Win95 makes the game engine faster I think. Like I said before, it's the reality of 1998. The game market needs now more hardware power than 2d card can afford. There is something we call demand/offer. If the demand is too low for other type of accelerator than 3dfx and Rendition, there is no advantages for Papyrus to make the title 3d compatible with D3D, OpenGL, VRush, etc... The game markets needs more power than what normal video cards can input. That's all. There is an option to take them off, by the way. It's a personal preference. I like them, but others don't. If you don't like it, take them off in "Graphic options". Like I said, it's not for nothing that they imput what you said. Remember they make some research on what we want and what we don't want. It's a marketing thing. <g>. (Heck that's simple to understand, I could take more about this). Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> Good race at the Brickyard, (-o-) Official Mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. About these arms ... won't we be needing at least one of them to notify other drivers we'll be slowing-down? I assume that's why we have the option to lift the arm in the demo. Kiss DOS goodbye! Wanna play, gotta pay. These days no 3D card is like no computer at all! Also, the voodoo II's work fine! Are you for real. Turn them off! And btw, they're great for replays! PS - get a clue!

I quite like the look of the arms, but the other day I tried turning them off and now I tend to concentrate on the road rather than my arms. It shaved almost half a second off my time! But they are definitely good for the replays, as they allow you to see the drivers exact inputs which I think will be helpful in the full game so we can see how smooth these fast guys setups are :) Steve

Exactly. Also, in the replays you can see if you have a dirty steering pot by twitchy inputs. I hope the final version shows the driver changing gears in replays too!
Try this..... PII-233, clocked to 262.5 Voodoo2 and/or Rendition 2100/2200 64 RAM All graphics 'on'. Resolution 800 x 600. Result? Real-life smoothness and speed. One could say "movie quality". No pauses, no hiccups, no slowdown, no "slow-motion" effect......just beautifully smooth frame-rate in "real time". Awesome! -- Regards, ---- Bruce.
Possibly due to improved frame-rate or perhaps just coincidence? It could be that they really do distract you that much but I suspect improved frame-rate could be the reason. Cheers! John

For me I am sure it's mostly the improved frame rate, but I also notice the subtle movements of the 3D tub more without the arms. I seem to have a better feel for the car without the arms. But I do enjoy plugging them in during the replays. :-) -- **************************** Michael E.
