Sierra Sports To Include Famous Nurburgring Track In Grand Prix Legends
Sierra Sports announces it has obtained the license to include the
world-famous Nurburgring track in Grand Prix Legends, a racing
simulation based on the 1967 Grand Prix Season. The first CD-ROM to
feature the original Nurburgring, Grand Prix Legends is developed by
Papyrus and due on the market this July.
In 1967, Nurburgring was the ultimate challenge to man and machine,
and the most deadly track in the Grand Prix circuit. The track, which
once hosted 22 German Grand Prix and crowds of over 400,000, was
abandoned after a 1976 race in which Grand Prix World Champion Niki
Lauda was nearly burned to death after an accident in the Bergwick
section of the 'Ring.
The Nurburgring's 14.2-mile "Nordschleife" was the most complex
permanent-use racetrack ever used in Grand Prix competition, and will
now be available for the first time for racing simulation fans.
With 174 corners, countless elevation changes, and a 1.4-mile long
start/finish straight, the racing legend will pose a formidable challenge to
drivers of the Grand Prix Legends CD-ROM. Some of the elevation
changes are so severe that the cars can become airborne in several
places around the circuit. From the Flugplatz to the Fuchsrohre to the
Karussell, the Nurburgring has always required nerves of steels and a
tremendous amount of discipline on the part of the driver.
The 1967 Grand prix race distance on the Nurburgring was 15 laps, or
213 miles. Jim Clark's 1967 pole position time was 8:04.1, and Dan
Gurney had the fastest lap time in 1967 with 8:15.1. A short (and much
safer) circuit of the same name was opened in May of 1984. Like all
racetracks included in Grand Prix Legends, Nurburgring will be
represented in its 1967 format.
Grand Prix Legends is a racing simulation featuring historical tracks,
teams, and cars from one of the most dangerous and exciting years in
racing history. The physics model in Grand Prix Legends allows cars to
drift, "catch air," and interact realistically with the road. A demo version
of Grand Prix Legends featuring the Watkins Glen track is available at
www.papy.com.
Some of the other legendary tracks included in Grand Prix Legends the
historic Spa, Kyalami and Zandvoort. Among the famous drivers
represented in the simulation are Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, and teams
like Lotus, Brabham, and BRM.

Notable threadNurburgring Nordschleife confirmed for Grand Prix Legends
A post relayed Sierra Sports' announcement that it had licensed the Nurburgring for Grand Prix Legends. Fans reacted with delight, joked about memorising its 174 corners, and wondered how the long track would fit in memory. Others traded tips on videos such as Derek Bell's "In Car 956" and footage of the 1967 German GP for learning the circuit, and someone gave July 1998 as the expected release date.

YES!!!!!
Thanks to everyone at Papy (Dave, Mike, Doug) and all the licensing
guys for sorting this out. If I'm ever in the region the drinks are on
me. GPL was great already (1 week of play and I'm still learning to
drive!), this makes it perfect!

>Sierra Sports To Include Famous Nurburgring Track In Grand Prix Legends
I seem to recall a few years ago there was a video that featured a lap
of the Ring viewed from an in-car camera mounted in a Porsche 956,
driven by Jackie Ickx or Jochen Mass (can't remember which). Does
anyone recall the name of the video or where it might be available?
Might be a handy thing to start watching it now (again and again) to
try and memorize the track.

Oh and I'm sure people will still whine because Monaco isn't in the
simulator <gggg>
LOL, 174 corners :-(
Think about this people...
The Karussel
The incredible Hatzenbach corners ! (whoa this is the most technical part of
the circuit.
The Plantsgarter (Horizontal jump on the braking zone ! Brake before or
after the jump !)
The Kleines Karussel (Kink at the end of it, awesome)
All those cool telephone poles, drain covers, bridges, etc...
<g> Can't do 10laps without crashing at the Glen, so it's about 1 'Ring lap
;-)

Now, how about an endurance sim with the Targa Florio (Piccolo Madonie

Wonder what it would take to code 1000 miles of Italian roads, villages,
mountains, lakes...

Ditto!
Actually, how's it going to fit into memory? And if it doesn't, does
Papyrus have a foolproof background loading system that won't put pauses
in our racing?

Yep, if you think its a video of Hulme's win at the 'Ring in '67. I
don't know anyone who has seen this, but I'm ordering at the end of

It is called "In Car 956". Derek Bell was the driver. It features laps
of a bunch of tracks in a Rothmans 956 including the Nurburgring.
I think Classic Motorbooks or EWA may have it.
It's fantastic.
Cheers.

Thanks, Bruce. Should be some cheap P2 300s around by then, that'll go
nicely with a voodoo2.

: I'm not suprised to hear this. Sometimes, at say Elkart Lake, your
: concentration can slip and it takes you a while to remember what part of
: the track your on and what to do next. I imagine that this will pretty
: much always be a part of the Ring. Something like learning one of those
: NFS tracks X 10. The mind boggles :)
I now greatly appreciate how <shift-R> puts you back on the
adjacent track, and not return you to the pits!
Martin
Nigel Mansell RIP!

This has always been a dream of mine. I would give up my
first-born to be able to take Stirling Moss's place behind the SLR's wheel!
As he once said [roughly]: It's one thing go fast round a corner in the
middle of a field. It's another thing to go fast around a blind corner
between a mountain and a ravine.
Then again, it's another thing entirely to do this in the safety
of your own home!
Martin
Nigel Mansell RIP!
OK...after the Mille and the Targa Florio, how about the Carrera Pan-America. My
step-dad crewed the Fletcher Porsches in '55. I'd love to be able to race him
one time on the circuit he has raved about lo these many years! And then
there's the Pikes Peak Hillclimb...wouldn't it be a blast to drive one of those
converted Indy Cars up Unser Mountain! Of course what we really need is time to
drive all these cool new sims....
Don
Hey all you GPL fans, check this out!
Neil,
Yes it is what you think, the coverage of the 1967 German Gran Prix at
Nurburgring.
Thanks for the hot tip, I ordered my copy this morning. This should be great
stuff to hold us
over until GPL ships. Here is the long version of the URL, if that doesn't
work 'cause of the CGI stuff just shorten it up a bit and you'll find the
video-
[link lost in import]
Thanks again Neil, you have made my whole day. All the best, Mike
