F1RS: Steering, braking and accel control problems

7 posts by 6 people · 12 Apr 1998 - 19 Apr 1998

I've got the original CD version of F1RS. But compared to GP2 I am having big problems with the controls. For braking and acceleration there isn't much response until I've pushed the pedals right near to the back when I would get a HUGE response. Almost like an ON/OFF switch if you know what I mean. There seems to be a dead-ish point for most of the control range. For the steering the thing just goes all over the place like it was over sensitive. What sort of config or patch would I need to fix these problems? I'm using the F1 SIM controller in "single joystick mode" in order to use it with other games. Can anybody help me with this? TIA I'm using the 3Dfx version if that helps. -- Kulvinder Singh Matharu (note : e-mail header address deliberately mangled)

Try setting the brake and accelerator sensitivity to 100%. If I lower the sensitivity to 0%, I get the on/off behavior that you experience. Smoothly rev the engine in neutral and see if you get a linear accelerator response. You should. Haven't seen this. There is a patch on www.f1racingsim.com where you can change the null zone in your DINPUT.DLL file. The latest patch is 1.08. A lot of people have noticed a frame rate slowdown, but I have noticed any in any of the patches. Can you set it up as a race car controller? I believe joysticks have strange steering characteristics. -- Kevin (Remove the "x-" prefix from my address in order to reply via email)

I'm also having some problems with the control sensitivity in F1RS. I just picked it up on Friday. I'm really trying to like this game. It appears to me that there's something real good under there once I work out the problems I'm having. If I can't I have no choice but to return it. I've tried the above, and it doesn't work for me. When I set my sensitvity to 100%, the throttle is partially down. Just like if my idle was set unusually high. If I hit the gas, there's a very fine amount of movement between this high idle state and full throttle. As such it very difficult to be at anything other than full throttle or high idle. 1st and 2nd gear are nothing but wheelspin for me and as such useless. I've messed around with the sensitivity setting without success. It seems to me that the lower I make it, it just lowers the are of pedal travel that this thin area of response comes in. It's doesn't do anything else. The steering seems a bit odd to me also. Does the sensitivity change with speed as GP2 lets you set? I've seen nothing in the manual or menus to indicate this, but sure as hell when I'm slow the wheel is too sensitive and when I'm at speed it's not sensitive enough. I've been able to change the in-game sensitivity, but all it did was get rid of some twitchiness. I have a TM GP1 wheel with CH pedals. They're working fine in N2, GP2, ICR2 and the GPL demo. They calibrate just fine in Win95. It's only in F1RS that I get this odd behavior. And I have and installed the v1.08 patch. If anyone has some tips or ideas I'd be greatly appreciative. HH

I had a similar problem in a different game.Turned out to be a potentiometer in my TM GP1 throttle. If you are technically oriented and have a DMM to read resistance there is a fix. You have to take apart your wheel to read the resistance range of the gas and brake pots.Pull the paddles back and get a reading and let go and read.I've found the best range to be 50k to 150k. If you don't want to go through with this, hook up a joystick and try it in the game to see if you get the same odd response. If you need more info e-mail me.C-YA

It's % doesn't do anything else. I haven't altered the sensitivity settings from the defaults. I don't really experience any problems. I actually like the feel. I think the defaults are around 80%. There is a whole lotta torque in that engine right behind your back. 1st gear is set pretty low. I only use 1st gear for the start of the race (or when I find myself off course or spun around -- which seems to happen all too often). STAY OUT of 1st once you get rolling. But you have to pretend you have a raw egg between your foot and the pedal when you are in 1st (and even 2nd). Just lightly apply some pressure and once the rear tires grip gently apply more until it's time to shift gears. Going into 2nd from 1st, expect to have to ease off the throttle a little to avoid more wheel spin. There has been some who feel that F1RS throttle control is TOO sensitive. I think that once you get used to it, it is fairly realistic. % The steering seems a bit odd to me also. Does the sensitivity change with speed % as GP2 lets you set? I find that there is alot of understeer at slow speeds. However, I find the control at speed pretty good. (but I am using the NASCAR Pro wheel and I have about 270 degrees of steering to your 180 -- check out Alison's webpage for information on increasing the wheel lock on your GP1 wheel -- http://www.nh.ultranet.com/~alison/racing/). Try playing with the poll with interrupts setting in the Advanced Game Controller applet. Also, you might want to install Thrustmaster's ProPanel applet and use it for you calibrations in Win95. ftp://208.129.210.78/pub/library/calibration/propanelv11.exe Are you using a VooDoo 3DFX card? I've reinstalled F1RS and have noticed some improvement. But I have found what you say to be true. It's a lot more controllable now, but 1st and 2nd are too sensitive for my liking. But not anywhere near what it was before. I think it would be realistic if I had the "seat of the pants" feel you have when really in the car. <G> As is, it is a touch too sensitive. Yep, but I only o'clock the card to 55mhz. Has this created problems for some? Thanks for the tips, HH

I recently upgraded to the Monster 3DII Voodoo2 card from the R3D Voodoo1 card on my P200MMX w/ 64MB RAM. I also replaced my AWE64 with the Diamond M80 PCI sound card w/ accelerated PCI joystick port. When I played F1RS using my TM GP1 w/ my old setup, I wasn't too happy about its controllability. Now F1RS runs like dream. Car control is smooth as silk & I no longer experience any slowdown even w/ all 22 cars racing on a track. My GP1 connected to my AWE64 usually ate up about 15% of the CPU time, but now thanks to the joystick port of the M80 it eats up less than 2-3% of the CPU time (also a PCI sound card frees up the CPU time when playing wave samples). I'm not sure the impressive performance gain & improved playability in F1RS is mainly due to the voodoo2 card, the PCI sound card, or the combination of the two. But one thing that's sure is I'm driving much much better w/ my new setup.
