Bad frame rates in GPL demo

Grand Prix Legends demo performance problems

A user found the GPL demo unusable in software mode and could not run 3Dfx mode with a Voodoo Rush card. Others pointed out the readme said Voodoo Rush was unsupported and reported smooth frame rates on Voodoo and Rendition cards, noting L2 cache and RAM mattered.

I just downloaded the GPL demo, but firstly I notice it refuses to load up in 3DFX mode. I get the impression this is to do with my Rush card. Secondly, in software acceleration mode the game runs at about 2fps on my P200. Is this just how the game is in this mode or what? Dammit, I wish it'd work in 3dfx mode :( -- Spudgun

On my P200mmx,32edomegs, with a Diamond Stealth II I got very smooth frame rates...Is there a frame per second counter anywhere?? Awesome > Gpl 3dfx does work with my pure 3d. Gpl 3dfx does work with my pure 3d. I have a 200mmx, w/32meg ram and the frame rate is still very very slow. From what i've read in the read-me file they recommend 64mb ram. However, there is a lot of potential for one hell of a sim.

Seem to recall setup instruction indicating Voodoo Rush not supported. Works beautifully on P2 300 with 64 MB and 3dfx (Monster 3d). I must admit I'm pretty impressed so far, now if only I could learn to stop spinning into the spectators..... Gary > On my P200mmx,32edomegs, with a Diamond Stealth II I got very smooth frame

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but it *is* your Rush card. Readme says unsupported in the demo :-(
I have p233mmx with Thriller 8meg and Pure3d. Great framerate with either, with everything on. Using the Thriller though, 800X600 with AA looks awesome. I do have 64meg though. Tried it without 3d very slow. Mike >Gpl 3dfx does work with my pure 3d. I have a 200mmx, w/32meg ram and the >frame rate is still very very slow. It hauls on my P233 with 96 MB ram and Monster 3dfx. I want this game so bad. Sierra has not made it available for preorder.

What you need to do is slow down for the corners ;) When I play with the GP Anglo-American car it take the corner about the middle of second gear or a little better.

RTFM dude. The readme states that Rush is not supported. I would get used to that if I were you...

No need, I'm swapping it for a REAL 3DFX card tomorrow! -- Spudgun

I'm running a K6 233 and Stealth II--I get glassy smooth frame rates in 800 x 600 and perfect in replays as well. This sim is INCREDIBLE--cannot wait for the final release--and I am slobbering at the thought that Papyrus has 6 months to get NASCAR3 done. Alan

But if you have purchased a Department store box with No L2 cache or a name on it Like Packard Bell...your gonna have crappy framerates no matter what Vidcard you slap in there. dave henrie

ditto the next guy..I've had the demo 2 or 3 days...haven't even peeked at a readme file. it ran first time...so maybe next week I'll read all the legal mumbo jumbo Sierra feels compelled to add to their readme's. dave henrie

Something is wrong. On a 200mmx and Pure 3D, frame rate should be excellent. Are you sure you've selected 3Dfx mode in the Options screen? Also, check to see how much L2 cache you have. GPL needs at least 256k, and 512k is better. If you don't have any L2 cache, GPL won't run well. I found that going from 32 mb to 64 mb didn't make a whole lot of difference in GPL's frame rate on my K6/200 (overclocked to 75x3=225) with Monster 3D (Voodoo, similar to the Pure 3D), but it may be different for you. RAM is so cheap now, it may be worth a try. As a last resort, you can turn off mirror detail and other graphics effects, but a 200mhz machine with Voodoo Graphics card should run GPL just fine. In that case, I won't waste my time responding to your questions. Have a nice day. Trips
Oh......okay then. Please feel free to throw us every question that you have that COULD have been answered by the 'readme'. We have nothing better to do, after all. > Hey, when I download a new sim demo I don't waste my time looking at > writing. -- Bruce. (At home)

Bruce, No offence, but I never asked a question about why 3dfx wouldn't work... I asked if it was normal for software accel. mode to be so slow, so please don't jump down my throat, it's not nice... -- Spudgun
