A playable demo of Grand Prix Legends will be available at
http://www.ogr.com on Monday, April 6th.
The demo will feature one track (Watkins Glen) and practice mode only.
There will be no AI or multiplayer support, as the main goal of this
demo is to display Papyrus' new physics engine.
I will do my best to answer any demo questions posted to this forum. We
have also set up an email address for tech support or compatibility

Papyrus's Mike Lescault announced a playable Grand Prix Legends demo for April 6, featuring Watkins Glen in practice mode to showcase the new physics engine, with native Rendition and 3Dfx support. He explained the exclusive release on OGR and plans for mirrors. Users reported it ran well on modest machines such as a P133 with a 3D card.

People already asked about Rendition and 3dfx modes. Let me complete
this set of questions by asking:
Will the demo run on non-3D-accelerated PCs? (no matter how slowly or
ungainly)

The demo will have native support for both Rendition and 3Dfx(including
some voodoo II specific enhancements). There will also be a software
only mode for folks without 3D accelerators, but the game is not yet
optimized for software only.

My understanding is that GPL will not run on anything less than a
Pentium II 200 mhz.
True or false?

Is a PII200 about as fast as a iP233mmx. We don't get PII200s here in
Australia :)

Who told you that? It is already well-known that you need a P2-333 and
a Voodoo2 card to run it in 15fps with minimum settings and no cars in
view.

I guess that this URL will be practically unreachable for a week from
now on, since everybody will want to download the demo (including me,
of course :)
Are there any mirror sites (gpl.gamestats.com will have it, I
understand), and will the usual suspects (SRN, USpits etc.) be allowed
to make the demo available on their sites?

I seem to remember not long ago, the Nascar2 demo being released only at
allgames.com I also remember the server receiving about 4 hits a second
until the whole thing crumbled. Lets hope this doesn't happen again.

There is no such thing as a PentiumII 200. The PentiumII line starts at
233.
I could see the game requiring a Pentium 200 as the baseline.
Ahhhh, I never knew Microsoft was making GPL. In that case, does
anyone know where I can buy a Merced? :)

Ogr.com has the exclusive rights to release the demo for all of Monday.
(On Tuesday everyone else should have it.) However, in the event that
there is a bottleneck and people are unable to download the demo from
ogr.com, we will have to release the demo to other sites.
I have been trying to contact a few sites to set up a "GPL Demo
Emergency Back-up System"; sites that will post the demo in the likely
event that ogr.com becomes overwhelmed. If anyone would like to offer
their site as an alternative source for the demo, please email me at my
aol address. (remove <nospam>)
Thanks,
-Mike
I have already prepared a download server for the GPL demo at
http://gpl.gamestats.com so hopefully it should be pretty easy going! Just
keep checking the site because the magic day is coming very soon!!! :-)
Thanks

This is the worst possible thing you can do for the end user when
releasing a demo.

It may still be a bit jerky even with all graphics and sound turned off...
I'd recommend a Daystrom M-5 series with human memory engrams impressed upon
the microchips , powered by a quantum singularity ( Warp core from romulan
warship should suffice ). At least that will get you up to 15 fps with MOST
of the eye candy turned on....Of course the latest certified drivers will be
needed. ( available for download at the nearest federation starbase );-)
I don't get it !!!.......uhhh......oh yeah......OK.....hey wait I'm being

No !!!!! Mark Fahrenkrug said about nothing when he invented that
GP-Legends wouldn't run on PC less than a PII 200mhz (doesn't exist). As I
recall, you will be able to run it very good on a simple P166 a Rendition
board. Well, you will find the answer tomorrow, but I don't know why did
the guy invented the sentence! <g>
Oh and for the moment, the short comings of GP-L are nothing compared to
what other titles have. It's 90% flawless ;-) .

Cool!! Can I get that in an AT format motherboard, or is it ATX only?
I was being seriously humorous.

It's a trip getting launched into the air!!
On nice touch I noticed is when watching myself nail a hay bail in the
instant replay through the "roll bar" cam, the camera went dead (fuzzy
off-the-air- snow screen) when the car rolled over on it's top. Cool!
This has got to be the most awesome race sim I have had the pleasure to
drive. When I was a kid in the 60's I watched a lot of these cars on
ABC's Wide World of Sports on saturday afternoons. Those were the days man...
I can't tell you how happy I am that somebody made a sim from this era.
Thanks Sierra!! Most awesome.
There's a bunch of mirrors.

Isn't a Stealth II a V2x00 card? If so, make sure you have "Rendition"
selected as your graphics option, quit out and restart - framerates
should be fine. If not, P200MMX chips are practically given free with
each packet of wheatie-flakes, and a 3dFX board is $100 or so. Either
or both of these will run GPL very smoothly and give you $1,400 change
from your $1,600.
Cheers!

Well silly me . GPL works just fine on my system as it is. Papy has done it
again. multiple 3d support. I just select Rendition and away I go. I haven't
checked my frame rates yet because I've been too busy trying to get 'round
without ending up on my head in turn 3 :-))) Seems to me that this thing runs
quite smoothly in Rendition mode. I'd be curious to know what the 3dfx guys
think and if one mode is substantially better than the other ?

I have a P166, Sound Blaster 16, 64 meg of RAM, a Monster 3dfx, and
that small demo of a game called GPL (a racing sim, I think) =)))) and
everything is ok! My frame rate is decent, as good as Nascar 2. Maybe
because I'm running the demo in Win95 and not some pre-alpha version of
Win98!
Philippe Sergerie
I'm running the game with a P133 and 32MB ram, also Monster 3D...I know the
min requirements say P166..but everything seems ok..runs fine. Do you think
I'll be able to ryn the full game with my P133?..Is this an indication of
what the min requirements for Nascar3 will be?

I have a 4MB Voodoo1, a Stealth 2, and a K6-233. I much prefer
Rendition mode at 800x600 w/antialiasing to 3DFX mode. The sim looks
better (not so blurry textures, etc) and actually runs smoother.
Using the 3DFX, I notice a bit of stutter around the last corner
occasionally (though barely perceptible). However I have yet to see
the framerate even think about faltering with the Rendition--steady as
a rock in or out of the***pit anyplace on the track. Of course the
real test will be when there's a full deck of cars in front of me, but
we'll have to wait on Papy for a bit longer for that.
This is definitely a game I will purchase ASAP (along with Comanche
Gold <drool...>)!
