I heard an interview that Papyrus may support direct3d in addition
to native 3dfx and rendition support.
Does this mean that N3 is going to be a win95 app?
According to C|Net it does require W95 (retch)
MW
According to GameCenter,it will be a Windows 95,3D accelerated only maybe
don't

Let's hope not! My jury is still out on Win98. I am not sure I am
ready to turn my OS into a browser. Basically the good points that I
have been able to gather about Win98 is support for USB, multiple video
cards, and FAT-32. I'm not ready to have my OS be IE4.x

Judging from what I have seen - they are backing off on this a little bit.
I think there will be a web and a non-web mode.

You don't have to turn it into a browser. thought it's great, why wouldn't
you want to?

An answer to the question, "Will Nascar3 be dos or win95"?
Yes it will-- sheesh.
Anyway, an inept question as it is-- is anything made now that is just for
DOS and not for Win95? Where ya been, buddy?

You may not have to make the settings in Win98 "look" like a browser,
but the OS is written like a browser whether it "looks" like one or not.
I'm from the old school and still work in a unix shell. This browser
approach thing is actually a little "insulting" to my intelligence.
Duh, let's make an OS act just like the one thing most people now
associate with a computer, a browser. That's creating an OS for the
lowest common denominator. Besides, the "browser" approach to Win98 has
a "Dark Side" element as well, which I don't care for either.

Not to mention the fact that most games ( including simulation games )
run slow under Windows. And that "DirectX" is even slower ;-)
and you have to buy new hardware or to upgrade just to make them run!
Too bad there isn't a linux version of Nascar 2 ;)

While there is a fairly large overhead to running sims in Win95, I
wonder if the reason Papy is going this route has more to do with their
new sim engine (a Client/Server model). I would think it might be
easier for them to get this to work in Win95 over DOS.
But I think the real reason is that they must follow the paradigm that
no auto racing sim worth its salt can be released that will run to its
maximum capabilities on hardware currently available at release date.
;-)
% Too bad there isn't a linux version of Nascar 2 ;)
Maybe I should have cross-posted this to one of the linux newsgroups.
Imagine the sim engine that all of those linux hackers could produce!

Maybe to _your_ intelligence, but not everyone is as smart as you. Some ppl
just can't figure things out.

I discussed this with a couple of Papy folks that run linux. We
concluded that it would be neat as an intellectual exercise, but would
have been of no practical value. :-)

To answer your question "Where ya been buddy?",
I've been running Nas2 in dos.
If Nas3 is truly a win95 only app, it means it is
going to be a totally different game(code),
almost all the code will be rewritten.
Will they get it right? Will the setups from N2 work
the same. Will I need an ES9000 mainframe to
get a decent framerate?

I would think that this one is going to be "totally" re-written.
% Will they get it right? Will the setups from N2 work

I am hoping that N2 setups will not work! :-) This is going to be a
totally different physics engine. There will be things to set up in the
garage that you've never seen in a Papy sim (seperate shocks and
springs, track bar, etc.). Besides, Papy has basically admitted that in
their old style of programming, the "feel" and physics of their sims, was
just to tweak until it felt right. Their new approach is to code the
physics of the car/track and then plug in the variables (torque, weight,
drag, traction, etc.) and actually model the car and track. This may be
the closest we have gotten to having a true "simulator" on our desktop for
auto racing. It'll be a long wait for N3, but thankfully this summer we
get to try the "beta version" <G> (Grand Prix Legends)!
Hopefully all we will need is a P5-166 and a good Voodoo or Rendition
card to be happy.....
