Gary, The masses are polarized on this one, but a lot of people, me included, think there is enough wrong with it to pass it over. I got it for free (gold beta preview) and I'm glad I didn't spend the money on it. At first it seemed a big step over ICR2, but the little things started adding up (no yellows, high system requirements, AI problems, etc. etc. etc.) that I simply started losing interest. The kicker was F1RS. I uninstalled CPR within days and haven't missed it since. Jeff Antley
CPR has just come out here in the UK, and I'd like some opinions as to how good it is when compared to Indycar or GP2. I'd hate to buy it if it's a pile of poo. It's thanks to you guys that I didn't buy Eidos' Power F1 !! Thanks in advance. Gary. -- To reply, remove nosmeg from e-mail address.

This review is from a *** auto racing simulation point of view. It not a software review or a game review, but is a review of a "racing simulation" software package. The answer is simple. Buy F1RS and put up with it's off track physics (a matter of taste) or wait for GPL. F1RS is a FAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR better buy than CPR.
I was happy with CPR when I first ran the game doing hotlaps on my own round Surfer's Paradise. The physics model is OK, the graphics are good (but not stunning) and it's a setup ***ist's dream. Then I tried a race with computer cars on the track. The frame rate slowed to a crawl and the computer cars seemed unable to complete the pace lap without crashing into each other. Once the race was running, or more accurately jerking, I discovered that the AI of the computer cars is truly appaling. Not just "bad", but absolutely, completely and utterly useless. In my opinion the game is completely unplayable and I've wasted 40 quid on it. My advice: buy it from somewhere like Electronics Boutique (where they have a 10 day money-back guarantee) so you can take it back when you discover just how bad it is. I wish I'd taken my own advice, but it was an impulse buy from a small computer shop with a "no refunds" policy, so I'm stuck with it ! *************************************************************************** * Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so... * Glenn Davies * ***************************************************************************
I agree with Jeff. If you have a powerful system and a powerful video card, and patience to fiddle with steering set-ups, etc., then CART:PR is capable of "simulating" the driving experience better than any other sim. on the market--including F1RS. The proviso, though, is that you are driving alone on the tracks! The AI is pathetic in too many ways to describe and there are a number of other gross oversights (like no yellow flags) that "add up" as Jeff says to ruin the experience. Until two days ago I believed that these problems would be patched (eventually) by Microsoft. However, Dean Lester, manager of simulations for Microsoft, has now confirmed (in a message on the Apex site) what most of the r.a.s. regulars here have been speculating since day 1--that there would not be follow-through on the supposed commitment from Microsoft to stick with this title and patch it until it meets the advertised claims on the box. For that reason alone I must advise you and everyone else not to buy the title. It's one redeeming feature (in its current incomplete state) is the online racing at the Zone. Some of the tracks work well and you can avoid the AI altogether. Unfortunately, there are too usually too few people there to have any fun...I guess not very many people are willing to buy a racing sim. just to race online when it has received so much bad press. Microsoft has just made their move that justifies all that bad press... Marc.

Marc Collins wrote Ewww, I have to disagree with this. I consider my PII 266, STB Velocity128 AGP as a powerful system, and I never found what you call the "Driving experience". Plain sh*t. F1RS is better than C:PR. Nascar2 is better than C:PR. SODA is better than C:PR. Heck TOCA IMHO is better than C:PR !!! Well, for me the driving experience is racing with other people at the same time on the track. I can't figure to race alone anymore after racing on the NROS. This is for any racing simulator. But the lack of yellow flags, poor AI and too many grip when overturning makes this sim a flop. No wonder why TRI or Micro$oft doesn't support it anymore <g> 90% of the r.a.s. population agree on this ;-) . Micro$oft tried to get into the serious racing market. They failed. If you have a little bit of money, get on the NROS. It's about 1-2 years ahead of it's time. A must have if you are a serious racer. And if you are a "pro-Papyrus". You will find even some real-life drivers (like Dale Earnheard Jr.) Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> Sponsored by http://www.awpss.com/ Good race at the Brickyard, (-o-) Official Mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. Ewww, I'm sorry Byron, but if you are from Australia it will not be good. Not good. Nooot good <include horror sounds here>. There is about 5-6 people that are from Europe (Jure, Peika, Richard, Robert, etc...) but all the others are from USA and Canada (I don't anybody from Mexico or elsewhere. All this is because of the darn speed of light (why could it be faster ) ). I'm really sorry. Some things are out of TEN's control. AFAIK TEN as put something for Australia (some sort of dedicated server). Not sure about that. But nothing for the NROS. Thanks for confirming my fears! I don't think the speed of light is near as big an issue as all the routing that occurs between our 'puters here in Aus and the U.S., etc. What's really needed is a straighter shot between our 'puters.

It takes about 250 m/s to get from the west cost to the U.S add another 40 or 50 from the east. Plus 100 or more through your modem plus 100 for all the routers so even with a really good modem connection you wont get there under 500 m/s. Even if you are on the backbone in Perth you are still only going to get 300 m/s at best. TEN has started at www.multiplay.com.au and they have suggested NORL as a possibility but with the limited amount of enthusiasts in Aus and the fact that we are so spread out it is unlikely to happen even if we could afford it. I played with some figures and it would be very expensive for a limited amount of racing.
