F1RS engine sound debate

A newcomer praised F1 Racing Simulation and asked for driving tips; replies recommended learning Monza first. The thread became a debate about the engine sound, with some calling it realistic and others weak, noting volume did not change with throttle. Replacement sound files and editing tips were shared.

The key to improve your driving is to learn the race track. You have to know in advance how the next corner looks, which gear you have to choose, ASO. Listen to the engine sound to get a better feel for the speed in the curves. The first laps you should slow down a little to make sure you stay on the track. That makes it easier to learn it. Turn on the Ideal-Line and try to follow it. I would turn all helps of except of the one that stops you from spinning while you accelerate (Don't know how this feature is called in the english version). Why? Because all the helps are stopping you from getting a real feel for the driving-model. Put the front wing 9 steps higher than the rear wing for the beginning (This is a good setting for getting a little better through the corners without drifting too much). For example F:17 B:8. Take your time learning the tracks corners and play around with your car setups. Use the manual, it's not too bad. That's all for the beginning, have fun! -- Be aware! Schreibi

I feel the same way. It is an excellent sim. I too was an arcade racer, and never found sims to be that interesting. I was hooked on the demo 6 months ago. I hope your keeping you R3D set to at least 57. I've ran it like this for over a year without a problem. It's pretty damn smooth with a Voodoo2. :) Did you turn damage off? The best way to learn is to start off really easy. Easy Mode, all the driving aids "on", and set damage to "none". This way you can concentrate on the track and knowing when and how much to brake and accelerate. I found this helped me out alot, and Im slowly increasing the difficulty the more I race. You may wanna run time laps or ghost laps, they are great ways to learn the tracks and get used to handling the cars, without having to worry about other cars getting in the way. -------- To replay via e-mail, remove ".spam" from the beginning of my e-mail address (Tyring to avoid junk mail)

Hi Guybrush Threepwood Oh no I would say drive monza. Learn that. In F1RS I would say the most easy and satisfing circuits are in no order monza, spa(alot of GP2 practice here) and nurburgring monaco is also alot of fun. Well I start of on the easy setting then learn the track. Once you know the track and can anticipate the corners you can then turn the easy settings off and start driving. A few simple things to do *for a short fun race* are to stick the revs up to full(17500), put on D type tyres, put about 30 in the fuel tank, bring down the ride height to about 55(dependant on the track), bring down 5th and 6th gears a few places and go race. This is as far as I am with F1RS at the moment but I have forced myself to race with antiskid correction off and all the other stuff off except for the gearchanges cause when GPL comes out you are gonna need to know how to drive! The engine sound on F1RS is atrocious.. when you rev the engine noise while on the grid it doesnt rev up smoothly, only does quantum jumps from one engine pitch to another, its ok when your accellerating in gear, does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?? this effect happens on Formula 1 by psygnosis too. also what version do you have, and is it the english or US version?? : I notice slight stutters when my R3D is set at 50hz, if I turn my R3D : to 60, the motion is much more fluid. Use Monza to learn. As far as tips go, do a lot of laps, learn about setups, do a lot of laps, learn more about setups, do............

I find the sound in F1RS to be quite good. The best of any F1 simulation in fact (IMHO). Actually I guess I am glad you were not the one in charge of the sound for this game. Who knows what we would get :-) The only problem I have with the sound is that grating downshifting sound you get sometimes (not every downshift). All in all I find the sound in F1RS a big part of the suspension of disbelief (or what ever that is). :-) -- Header intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

Not a sim, of course, but the best F1 engine sound I've ever heard was on the Sega arcade racer "Super Monaco GP". It really captured the low rattle that race fans hear most clearly during in-car shots. Whether or not this is what the driver hears from within the helmet is another matter, though... Martin

I have to agree with papadoc and gcisko on this one. At first I thought F1RS sounded a bit strange, I was used to the GP2 sounds. But when I ran the sim during the OZ race I realized how close it sounds to the real cars. If anything, a real F1 car has a more staccatto edge to it. The sim starts to sound better the smoother you drive, give it time. It really helps to have a sub-woofer or connect your sound card to your home stereo like I have! I hope my new neighbors are F1 fans! Don

Well I'm sure people already know there are replacement sounds available for F1RS in www.f1racingsim.com . Some of them weren't working that great, but at least two of them were very good and worked great. NO SHIT! Just drive the thing and shut up! ( Just a joke flamers!) Jeez, there is so much to like about most of the recent sims ( CPR excluded...) but there seems to be an inordinant number of complaints. Papadoc, I have to agree with you about the "sounds" of racing. I've been *** around racetracks since I was a baby ( 40+ years) and the sounds of the different engines always get to me. I have a stereo recording I made at Long Beach during the F1 days just as the Turbo era was beginning, so you can hear the 12 cyl. Ferraries and Ligiers, the Renault 6 cyl. Turbos, and a shitload of Ford Cossies. I stick it in the deck every now and then to remind me what real race engines sounded like! I think my favorite though is a normally aspirated, full race Porsche flat 6. It sounds like someone is tearing a bedsheet in half over a stadium PA system! Don
A very accurate description (the bed sheet and PA)!. Love the sound myself. I still think, and I know up front that it sounds a bit "thin", that a World Rally Group A Celica sounds very nice at decent revs. Off topic I know but it seemed to flow?

These sound files are a waste of effort IMO, since the real problem as I see it is the "texture" of the sound. There is no modulation of the sound and nothing to differentiate an acceleration from a de-acceleration except a change in pitch. A real engine has many different harmonics that come into effect as the rpm's change. Also, there is no modulation of the sound when going over bumps. The sound is plain with about the same amount of texture as an electric razor. Substituting sound files change the sound, but they can't provide different harmonic content over different rpm ranges since that would require a more elaborate design in the software. BTW, If you consider these posts about the sound to be whining, then you'd better shut your ears. And don't bother to buy the next version of F1RS, because it might have some improvements in it that are a result of the constructive criticism that people are discussing now. Personally, I wouldn't bother discussing or criticising anything if I didn't think the game was worth while in the first place, I simply wouldn't be playing it. DS

Ok, could you tell me which racing sims/games have these "different harmonic content over different rpm ranges" well implemented as you are racing, so that I can try them out? So far I've tried for example CPR demo, TOCA, Psygnosis F1 demo, Ultimate Race Pro, Nascar 2, does any of these have it? I can't say any of them have made me say "Gee this is exactly how F1RS should sound". I agree the engine sound in Ultimate Race Pro is more manly than in F1RS, but I'm not sure F1 cars should sound like that anyway. ;-) *** http://www.netlife.fi/users/ttammi/

The wierd thing is though that Ubi go to all the trouble of recording "real" sounds yet dont even have varied volumes for different throttle applications. I would think this would be very easy to patch and cannot understand why the haven't/don't. I emailed them about this and a couple other things and was told they are working on F1RS 2 and my comments would be forwarded to the team. Looks like support for F1RS ended with patch 1.07. I don't know that too many people will show a lot of interest in F1RS 2 since GP3 will no doubt be around by then.

What makes you think the world is waiting for GP3, I surely am not. If you are so critical of Ubisoft's first attempt at making an F1 sim (which IMHO waxes GP2 easily), Why not compare F1rs to GP1 or World Circuit, by using your same logic. Ubisoft's second attempt will be far better, and it will probably be released before GP3. My bet is that GP3 will not even be any better than F1rs (first attempt). Anyone may disagree, but this is only my opinion.

Now Ronny, you know something we don't know? Got a release date on F1RS 2? If they release F1RS 2 in the next 12 months they should be hung. I say this because they should patch F1RS till it's perfect within it's design parameters instaed of rushing off to start F1RS 2. But these days, who am I kidding, hahahahahahahahaha! I would say that if they are truley interested in their reputation they should address the following with patches 1/ Sounds (volume proportional to throttle application) 2/ Off track physics 3/ HD accessing during first lap out 4/ Rethink menus/save default setups 5/ Fix D3D graphics. At this point in time I think ICR2 is still the best sim for the PC. The off track physics just about kills F1RS for me. And CPR is, well, CPR :)

Sure, but neither you or anyone outside of the development team knows what the design parameters are, so I'm not expecting any more features than what was in the original release. The only thing that I require in a game release is that it doesn't crash on a majority of system configurations. This has not been entrely achieved (at least on my system in all areas of the program). If a company feels like releasing a patch that adds some features, then this is a bonus, but not something to expect or require. as well as different samples for accel / de-accel and adding effects of bumps on the engine rpm. Also, the general slow-speed spin model seems to be non-existant wrt the perpetual spinning regardless of accelerator or steering input. 3 and 5 don't affect me but I'm sure that with a P5 and reliance on D3D, there would be a considerable performance penalty. As stated above, I think these are all worthy features for a new version. I could list about a hundred additional effects that I would like to see in a future simulation, but I'm sure that the development team that created F1RS is quite capable of thinking of these things as well. Its just a matter of how much time and resources are available between needing to generate some income. I agree about the grass effect, even though I am gradually spending less time in that environment. :) I don't mind at all that Ubisoft is working on a new version of the game as I can understand the need to define a cutoff point after which any more work is considered a new product. And I don't mind at all paying $50 per year for a constantly improving and up-to-date F1 sim. DS

While its irrelevant what other sims do, GP2 does provide different sound samples for acceleration and de-acceleration. It also has the sound modulated when the car travels over bumps or a wheel goes over a curb. If I recall correctly, CPR also caused the engine sound to reflect the bounces over bumps as well as having much different hamonics at low rpm versus high rpm. But its been quite a while since I ran the CPR demo, and need to download it again. There is such a thing as a graduated scale between "this is pathetic" and "this is perfect". I certainly don't expect perfection or an exact reproduction (imagine having a real F1 car in your livingroom), but it is possible to make a more realistic sound than provided by a single sound sample. Apparently you and others don't notice such minute detail, so it doesn't matter to you. That's fine, but you (and others) should realize that everyone has different opinions, that they aren't necessarily complaining, and that calling their discussion a derogatory term such as whinning is uncalled for. Thats all I will say to you about this. Yes, I agree with the volume issue. But I am not dissatisfied about what is lacking, just expressing my concern that more could and should be added in future releases. If GP3 arrives first, then that is great, I'll get it also. DS

Err, I thought that is the whole point. It isn't like F1RS is the first driving sim people have played, yet many seem to say it has the worst sounds of any driving game. I'm just interested to know which F1 or Cart game has done the best ie. is the very closest to the real thing. Some people have mentioned F1GP2, but on the other hand I have also read its motor sounds are completely artificial. Go figure, artificial motor sounds sound better than those recorded from a real F1 car? *** http://www.netlife.fi/users/ttammi/
My Dollars worth. I have MS Cart PR. I think it's sounds much better than Psygnosis F1 (twingy like a bunch of sine waves). In Cart, I notice gear shifts with a nice strong pop, you can hear the shits pop HARD. Up shifts and downshifts reverberate good as you can hear the harmonics and the gears. Don't get me wrong it can be muched improved. Besides the sounds and fairly good 3D, it steering can be somewhat whacky. I found some good and extremely bad settings. My comments: Need for Speed2 ____ totally crappy, the car levetate from the ground and look cheezy. The sound is not realistic. Psygnosis _____ I thought the control on the track was pretty good. Sound is a decent simulation effort. Test Drive 4 ______ A Joke. I really expect some nice clean rendering of the cars. Not. The sound is a step backwards from what I can remember from the Amiga version. I remember hearing Turbo chargers kicking in and out with the Amiga version. The early PC versions used beeps to simulate engines sounds (he he he). Today's version is not good. But for those how don'y understand the hollow sound of a Mustang with FlowMaster, cats removed and an H-Pipe won't understand tuned exhaust music. UbitSoft's ____ I don't know. But I think I will be dissappointed if the sound isn't better or equal to MS Cart PR. Developer's, please do something with the engine sounds! Improving that, won't take away from the experience of those, who don't care. Please, one more comment: In MS Cart, there is a slamming engine sounds. It has to be sampled. It is the PACER car. To hear it best, do an instant replay of a race. Then view the replay in Blimb View, you will hear that sucker pumping as if someone stuck a mic into the exhaust of a 351 or 440 V8. Jeff Spruiel

And I don't mind at all > paying $50 per year for a constantly improving and up-to-date F1 sim. I disagree here. I think once every 2 years would be fair enough. Also, it's been my experience with other products that major overhauls, when needed, cannot be done in a 12 month period. This leads to a product being flogged to death and just having selling points added and the product gets old fast. In any case, if once/year I would expect good discounts for owners of the previous version. The most disappointing thing to me about F1RS is how good a sim it is until you get off track. It then transforms from sim to kiddy arcade thing in the blink of an eye. I just don't understand why they cut this corner :) And added to this is the volume unmodulated engine sounds which is also arcadey and this is even an insult to arcade titles. Also, the failure to fix the D3D version is a disgrace. I conceed that I think MS chose a bad API, but still, it's the std for 3D and should have been properly supported. So far I have spent $300AUS for a Viper and never use it thanks to F1RS and CPR.

To bad Ubi forgot to record the different volumes at different throttle applications though. What a joke to go to all that trouble and not even do that! Or at least "sim" it :)

Jeff, good post, and I especially enjoyed this; "In Cart, I notice gear shifts with a nice strong pop, you can hear the shits pop HARD." ^^^^^ Now that's realism :)

Well, if they do come out with a new version every year, then you can just skip a version and buy one the next year, and everyone will be satisfied :) Valid point, but it does depend a lot on the resources that a company has as to how often they can come out with a new version. And after all, as long as it is still a F1 sim, its not like its going to be a totally new setting. Of course a discount would always be appreciated but some people spend $50 on a evening's entertainment, so for a piece of software that I'd probably spend a 100 hours or more on, it seems acceptable to me. Agreed, but maybe they thought that it wasn't supposed to be an off-road racing sim :) The finite nature of resources would seem to explain all of the deficiencies mentioned. Its evident from the reports of many developers that D3D requires a considerable amount of extra work in order to make it run acceptably on even the best 3d hardware platforms. D3D will probably be okay eventually, maybe DX7 or 8 :) Seems to be quite adequate for alot of arcade shooter games (Forsaken, etc.) but flight and auto sims seem to really stretch the limitations of even the most powerful hardware on it. The primary goal of D3D is to target the widest amount of hardware, which it does well, but at the expense of not achieving as high performance as a native port. But that is another topic and I really don't want to go there. DS

Actually, let me take you there :) Well, not really. But I did read somewhere the other day that MS is looking at backing down on the D3D API and basing it on Open GL or Glide. Sorry, can't remember which - too many ***y API's :)

That downshift sound is easily removed using a util such as Cool Edit by editing the file in f1datab/resson/ called bnk_0.bnm. Just replace the downshift sound with silence and you wont hear it anymore. I think there's even any easier way but I've yet to test it. The sound can even be replaced with that from GP2, if you prefer it. In fact, someone has made the GP2 engine and downshift sound available at http://www.f1racingsim.com/ Tony
