F1 Challenge availability is ridiculous

F1 Challenge 99-02 becomes hard to find

Nathantw complained that F1 Challenge 99-02 had vanished from stores, and others shared where they had found copies. Tiny Lund noted EA had lost the F1 licence to Sony and admitted buying up cheap copies to resell on eBay, which drew angry criticism. Eldred and Steve Smith discussed whether copying out-of-print games could be justified.

Howdy, Does anyone else think that the availability for F1 Challenge, which is non-existent, is ridiculous? I know the sim went out of production a while ago, but come on, they're nowhere to be found. I'm always hoping it'll show up in a $9.95 box set with other games that nobody wants anymore, but so far, nothing. I've searched numerous stores and I only found it once for $19.95 at Fry's but didn't buy it and when I finally went back to the store to pick it up it was gone. I checked EBay and of course $50 is the going price. In a world where I can still find games that are over 10 years old in stores I can't understand why I can't seem to find this relatively unwanted game in any bargain bins. If it was so damn popular when it first came out then EA would have tried harder to win over the FIA to have a share of the game licensing instead of giving it to solely to Sony. Instead EA must have produced maybe 2000 copies worldwide and now we're all relegated to looking all over the world via the Internet to find a single copy and need to pay premium prices (sometimes more than when they were new) when we do find it. Absolutely ridiculous.
I had a devil of a time finding it. Finally picked it up at Electronics Boutique for $19.95, in some podunk town I just happened to be driving through. It's a find product, too bad it isn't distributed better. I don't know, I found it at a Best Buy in Chicago about a month or so ago for $9.99. They had a couple copies on the shelf, mismarked at $19.99. Just keep looking. On Wed, 14 Apr 2004 03:20:27 GMT, "nathantw" <[email hidden]> wrote:

6 months ago I saw this sim in every large overhead electronics store.(along with N2003) Then, when you finally want it, it disappears. I always try holding on until there is a price drop, but its usually too late. I got lucky with F1C a month ago, finding it new for 19.99 in Staples, and it was their last copy. They have not received new copies since. N2003 was another story. Ebay for $31.00 US I don't care though, its worth the price. :-) "nathantw" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%52fc.22377$7%[email hidden]... > Howdy, > Does anyone else think that the availability for F1 Challenge, which is > non-existent, is ridiculous? Yeah I sent an email to EA Sports asking them if they were going to do a cheapo re-release, which they usually do with most of their sports titles, but I haven't heard back from them. For example, at the local CompUSA they have a $9.95 jewelcase rack and F1 2002 is there...along with most of the other 2003 EA titles (Madden, NASCAR Thunder, etc.) But we still haven't seen the cheapo F1 99-02...wonder why?. Maybe you should visit the EA Sports web site and send them another email? If they keep hearing there is some demand, they may reissue it. In the meantime, if you want the full retail version, the gohastings Web site would seem to be one of the few places that still offers it at a reasonable price.

Yes. I was lucky and bought it the day it came out (had it on pre-order) but can't believe how hard it is to find now. http://www.Amazon.ca/ lists it as "Usually ships in 1-2 weeks". It's $34.99CDN. http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008LUMT/qid=1081961256/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_0_5/702-6087203-3004806 Another site to try is http://www.gametz.com/. It's the Game Trading Zone. Tons of people post their available and wanted games. It's a pay membership now but I think a 1 or 2 month membership is only $5. I've gotten a few older/hard-to-find titles from there. Just noticed that they offer a free 4-week trial membership. Just checked and there's 1 F1C available. Sometimes people forget to remove a game after they sell/trade it so you have to take the listings with a grain of salt. - F50 GT nathantw wrote:

Gentleman if you can find them buy them. EA has lost the F1 license deal to Sony, so don't expect a new F1 game for some time and any possible add on mods for some time after that. We all know Sony's past in the racing sim market. F1C is as good as it gets for the foreseeable future. I got to thank the guy that pointed out Go Hastings here. I bought all they had. As for the 50.00 at ebay, that's cheap considering they have gone for as high as 100.00. I don't feel bad selling my 8.99 copies at 50.00 each. Capitalism at it's greatest! Whatever the market will bear and I have to get a new PCI express setup this summer this will keep my wife out of the equation. With Papy finished, I suspect that N2003 is going to go the same route F1C is going once the supply starts running low. You'll see copies going for big bux on ebay and scarce, if not obsolete, everywhere else. I say grab 'em while ya can!

No, I'm the one who preserved your and other's ability to purchase a copy, as opposed to them going to individuals who won't be selling them, and I'll be selling them through voluntary transactions on ebay. So you're the jerk who hoarded them all?
I was thinking the same thing as that other person who said you were the one hording them all. You are not preserving anything. Are you selling them for $8.99 a piece? No, you're not. You basically went out and took the rest of whatever as left took them off the market. Because of your greed you made it basically priced the items way out of anyone's price range. Thanks, Tiny. Gee Nathan I feel real bad right now. I see your point. You chose not to buy the game at 49.95 when released because it was too expensive. Then a few months later the price drops to 19.99. Too expensive again? Then finally drops to 10.00 and what happened? All gone. So now I am responsible for your poor choices? Thanks for the offer of your friendship at any rate. It is awful lonely at the top. "nathantw" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:zd4gc.52228$[email hidden]... Unlike you I'm not thinking of myself. I'm thinking of all those folks that probably did want to buy the product and found it at Hastings for $8.99. They can't buy it because you just went out and purchased all of them so you can resell them at a higher price. I guess you thought Hastings was actually Costco. Did you show them your resellers license too? Believe me, my life won't change because I don't have the sim and I'm certainly not buying it for the high price you'll probably be selling it for. It'll be interesting to hear if you get the $41 extra you're looking for. Then again, you'll probably tack on $20 for shipping if you're selling it on Ebay. ;-) If I see the sim at a store for $20 or lower, then I'll get it. If not, oh well. Such is life. Have a good one! Don't worry Nathan. I was just giving Tiny a hard time, really. He's free to buy all he wants wherever he can find them, as far as I am concerned. If he can turn a buck or two, more power to him! I don't think he should plan on retiring on his F1C sales, alone, though. Because if you've played EA games for a while, you now that they invariably re-issue their old games in a "shovelware" form, after they pull the boxed ones off the shelf. They did that with SCGT, F1 2000, F1 2001, and F1 2002. I bought SCGT as "shovelware" at Wal-Mart. It even came with NASCAR Road Racing attached (pweee! what a stinker!) But I bought F1 2001 and F1 2002 in the retail boxes and still have them, too! Anyway it's only a matter of time before EA does the same with F1C. Then anybody who missed it in the box for $9.99 will be able to buy it in a jewel-case with the manual in PDF form on the CD...for $9.99 or so. When that happens, Tiny's hoarded F1C games will be worth less than what he paid for them, when shipping is included. As you know, sometimes prices are higher than they should be, due to artifical demand, but they eventually right themselves again! (economics 101)
