I'm Getting an ECCI Wheel!

Buying an ECCI wheel and PDPI/PMB2 setup tips

John Simmons announced he was buying an ECCI 6000GT wheel with the PMB2 brake module and USB option. Steve Smith said his ECCI had gained him about two seconds a lap and shared registry tweaks for the PDPI gameport card, while several owners complained that the PMB2 brake required enormous force. Joachim Trensz noted that real brakes lock well before full pedal travel, and a side spat flared between John Simmons and David G Fisher over RASCAR.

I know, but I'll be driving poorly with style. :) It's about 85% back, and about as good as it's gonna get.

I'm still not sure about that. :) > When's STARS gonna start up? ;-) Well, I put it out there and got six other people. A bunch of folks said they wanted a league like that, but only a handful ever signed up. People kept saying build it and they will come" - well I built it and nobody came.

It looks like y'all only have a good time when it's a road-course race (cautions off and GPL-style separation of competitors). And since you poked your head out from under your rock, I'll add that your letter to certain competitors to essentially shape up or else was uncalled-for. I've been racing against ZZ for almost seven years in both GPL and Nascar Racing, and his performance and attitude on the track (and off) has never been an issue with me, and you'll probably find dozens of other people that will say the same thing. I don't know who else got your email, but I'm sure they didn't earn that kind of treatment either.
Well, two seconds at the Isle of Man, not Bristol. "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <P%0fc.16195$[email hidden]>, > [email hidden] says... > > No, it does help. I picked up abt. 2 sec./lap when I got my ECCI fouryears

I'm not much above average, and then only because I prolly have 3,000 hours in the game. I only stopped driving it at least an hour a day when all the roadies came out for N2003. Really? News to me. With regards to yellows, we had one really bad race at the beginning of the new season, but have averaged just 5.8 yellows per race in the others (including an 8 yellow Bristol race which some still thought was a great race). That's pretty damn good considering we are running 50% races now, and have added a significant amount of new drivers. Word of mouth has been bringing new, good drivers into RASCAR from other leagues this season. They wouldn't be joining us if they weren't having a good time in our races. Our road course races have been excellent, and there has been fantastic, very close racing up front and throughout the field. > And since you poked your head out from under your rock, I'll add that > your letter to certain competitors to essentially shape up or else was > uncalled-for. I don't remember anyone from RASCAR describing it that way in our discussions at the forum or in RASCAR committee e-mails. They said things like we "worded it so it wouldn't offend anyone" and that it "was probably the least harsh thing that could have been done". They said that something had to be done after Rockingham, and they'd rather have a private polite letter than a public rude post on ras about their driving. Not one RASCAR member complained about the letter except for ZZ, and one driver who received it. That one driver later said, "I apologize for bringing the whole thing up" (his protest) after reviewing a replay. Another recepient said he "earned his letter", and appreciated the way we handled things (privately and politely, not rudely in public). The third recepient never commented publically or privately, so I don't know how he felt, but he has been driving very well since that letter was sent. Might be a complete coincidence, or maybe it helped a bit. Don't know.

ZZ never even received a letter, so you two ought to communicate better in the future. We've made changes that have improved the racing in RASCAR. We added Teamspeak which has helped the drivers become more friendly and respectful of each other. They can also communicate their intentions better on the track, and explain their view of any incidents (or even admit fault) which helps calm tempers during a race. It creates a good atmosphere for racing. The races are for points, which encourages everyone to look at the big picture instead of going for it all in each individual race. Drivers approach these races more seriously and intelligently (using caution is a big part of this) because they are working towards a goal of a good overall finishing position in the standings. We run practice races before the main race. There is a two self spins and park it rule. The whole group has a say in what happens now. Just last week I wanted the off week road course races to count in the points standings (for a number of reasons). Mitch didn't. We had a vote, and my idea was voted down. I wasn't happy about it at all, but that's the way we do things now. The group is doing a great job on and off the track, and your comment that, "It looks like y'all only have a good time when it's a road-course race (cautions off and GPL-style separation of competitors)." is just more bullshit. :) Normally, I can do/buy whatever I want, but with such a big ticket item ($1130 after shipping), it's best to make sure it can be bought without straining the household finances. That's not being pussy-whipped - that's being smart. :)

IMO the most important thing about a wheel under the pure driving aspect is the pot quality and characteristic. ECCI are certainly using some of the best. But I think especially their new USB gadget will help make you faster. I remember how the PDPI card made me faster back then. But the best wheel is nothing without good pedals, and that's where for me ECCI excels particularly. If their E6000 were FF and if my E3000 weren't so good already, I'd probably be tempted :) Achim

Maybe you didn't have it set up properly. Tricky to set up, but once right (particularly w. the ECCI, which sometimes required hairy Registry edits) resulted in a huge improvement in smoothness. Not only did it calm the typical game-port "jitters" but the PDPI also had a much higher sample rate (making the steering a lot less notchy) while simultaneously decreasing the CPU occupancy, giving you a higher frame rate as well. Or maybe you just weren't old enough to drive. (The PDPI was a looong time ago.) I wasn't aware that registry tweaking was required. I guess that's why I didn't notice any difference. I was definitely old enough to drive. Back when I bought it, I was 39 years old...... an old timer by gaming standards.....lol. Maybe too old to drive fast. ;-)

Not all ECCI/PDPI combos required Registry tweaking. I only found out 'cuz I was doing a story on IndyCar Racing for my old alma mater, Car and Driver, and at the second Calibration screen (steer left/steer right), I wasn't getting full deflection. Even tho Windows 98 compensated for this at the end of the Calibration routine, it was extrapolating from too small a sample, so even tho the jiggles were gone, the steering was still a bit twitchy. I called PDPI and they gave me some new values to enter into the Registry. Voila, full deflection and smooth steering. Later ECCI wheels had higher-ohm pots, so the resistance was spread over a greater range from TDC to full lock L or R. I'm also one who's stubbornly held onto an old rig with an ISA slot so I could utilize my PDPI with a TSW. After much fiddling with the Registry numbers, I settled on a set of numbers that works quite well with the TSW. However, I've since purchased an ECCI 6000 GT. Unfortunately, I've yet to discover a set of Registry settings that work. My old TSW numbers didn't work at all. I decided to use the default Registry numbers while attempting to utilize the myriad of adjustments available with the ECCI hardware. The steering and the gas pedal are fine. But I cannot lock up the brakes. In fact, I have to *stand* on the brakes to slow down and kicking the tail out with a touch of brake is impossible. My wheel is equipped with the PMB II option and the amount of pressure required to use the brakes is outrageous. I'm sure there's a combination of hardware and Registry settings that work, but finding them has proven to be elusive to me...:-( Before I dump my old PDPI and opt for ECCI's new USB interface, would you (or anyone else) provide the Registry numbers they're using with an ECCI/PDPI combo? FWIW, I'm running Win98SE with DirectX 7.0. TIA

The PMB2 really requires some kind of floor lock system ;) I just moved my chair closer to the wall and used a 2X4 as a block on the opposite side of the pedals. Im still not totally sold on the PMB2 option. I guess it works but as mg says it takes allot of force to get to full lock which IMO reduces brake "feel". This with the PMB2 set at full soft setting. AFAIK, USB works about as well as the PDPI did, even tho the circuitry has no relationship. Well, at least I'm not alone...:-) I'm wondering if the PMB II might be ill-suited for some people. What's odd is that John at ECCI said that GPL was used as a reference for designing it. Yet, I find that trail-braking and/or subtle inputs to the brakes are impossible when one has to stomp on the pedal. I'll give John a call and see what he has to say. Thanx for the reply Mitch.

That'd be great, Steve. I've always used the same numbers for gas and brake, but perhaps the PMB II option requires a unique number for the brakes as my gas pedal is fine. Yes, I still have my PDPI disc. My PDPI is still installed so I'll try your numbers and see what happens. I'm assuming you don't have to use Herculean effort to apply your brakes. Did you opt for the PMB II gadget? Thanx very much for the help.

Eventually, I'll have to move to a USB interface as a PC upgrade is way past due. But, since GPL doesn't require a state of the art rig to run and an upgrade is going to have to wait, I'm determined to get my old ISA/PDPI combo working. According to ECCI, their new USB HD Ultra is "the absolute best interface available for driving controllers." Perhaps it is. But, I've spent a ton of time fiddling with the brakes on my ECCI and like Mitch, I'm not totally sold on the PMB II option. Makes me leery towards buying anymore "absolute best" gear...:-) Thanx again.

My notes say, "Navigate: HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE/SYSTEM /CURRENT CONTROL SET/CONTROL /MEDIA PROPERTIES/PRIVATE PROPERTIES/JOYSTICK/OEM/PDPI /FINE TUNING/DEFAULT/FINE TINING INFO or some such... ...then edit the lines that read 5b 00 00 00 5b 00 00 5b 00 00 00 5b 00 00 00 so that they read [line 1] 0000 50 00 00 00 50 00 00 00 P... P... [line 2] 0008 50 00 00 00 50 00 00 00 P... P... [line 3] 0010 [blank] Or something like that (this doesn't look right). On another piece of paper, it says the as-installed digits (not hex) are [line 1] 0000 95 00 00 00 80 00 00 00 [line2] 0008 80 00 00 00 80 00 00 00 [line 3] 0010 [blank] and that that this should be edited to 0000 50, etc., and 0008 50, etc. So I'm guessing the key numbers are 5&6 and 13&14 in each line. 5b is obviously hex. So fiddling with non-hex values between 50 and 95 is what changes the range. I wish I still had a copy of the old Registry, but I don't. Hope this helps. --Steve "mg" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Tue, 20 Apr 2004 10:47:54 GMT, "Steve Smith" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >AFAIK, USB works about as well as the PDPI did, even tho the circuitryhas

Well, I ordered my ECCI with both PBM/2 and the USB/HD option, so I'll be hapy to comment on the combination in a few weeks.
The PMB is adjustable is it not? Yes it is adjustable but I cant imagine anyone using anything but the softest setting. Even at the softest it takes tremendous force to get full range of motion. Its like the last few cm's require more leg than I have ;) Mitch "Steve Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:W6shc.100584$[email hidden]... > The PMB is adjustable is it not? >

Thanx for those numbers, Steve. I tried them, but didn't see any noticeable difference in the way the brakes react. I eventually ended up with 1b for gas and brake as it gives me the most range in the GPL calibration screen ( 25---226 & 40---206 respectively). I'm convinced that the PMB II brakes on the ECCI are designed to require a *ton* of pressure to activate them. Since the guys at ECCI are very helpful, I'm going to give them a call & see if a hardware tweak ( different spring, removal of PMB II, etc) is in order. Thanx again for the help.

That'd be great, John. I'd also be interested in what numbers you see in terms of range when you calibrate your new wheel. Hopefully, you run Papy sims so I can compare my numbers with yours...:-) Thanx for the reply.

Anyone see the story on Andy Wallace in Autoweek? He said his Grand Am Daytona Prototype requires 1100 lbs (!) of pressure to fully depress the brake pedal, and (at a standstill?) he's only capable of 800. Alan

Maybe there was a little misunderstanding on the part of ECCI when they defined their parameters. Because, you don't need to depress a brake pedal fully, ever, in a real car. All you need is to get to where the brakes lock up, and that is usually a lot earlier than at the fully-depressed position. If you needed to depress the brake pedal fully to get the brakes to lock up, you could be sure you had a brake fluid leake somewhere. Achim
Anecdote. Years ago Citroen decided that since pedal *pressure* was what slowed the car down, why bother with mere*travel*? So they installed a pedal that looked like a hockey puck glued to the firewall. It had zero travel, but the harder you stepped on it, the more the car slowed down. Everybody hated it, so they went back to a conventional pedal, FF half a century to driving sims. With a few notable exceptions (like ECCI), we drive w. brake pedals where travel = deceleration and marvel that it's hard to modulate the braking effort ("threshold lockup"). ECCI is doing the right thing, but they may not have gotten the params right.
