I've just managed to re-install GPL after a couple of years absence
(that installation is a tale of woe in itself, but for another time).
I've got it to the stage where its all running smoothly bar one thing:
fully depressing the accelerator pedal doesn't give me anywhere near
full revs - the rev indicator on the Ferrari only reaches around the 9
o'clock position on the dial.
I've recalibrated both in Windows and GPL until I'm blue in the face, to
no effect. Even short-calibrating in GPL (i.e. only depressing the pedal
half-way when asked to move it the full distance) had no effect.
What on earth is wrong?
If it's relevant, I have
Windows XP Home
MS Sidewinder FF (the gameport version, not the USB one).
Help!

I'd guess your pedal pot is spiking. When a pot is dirty or worn it
doesn't always give a clean value, and can suddenly increase or decrease
in resistance. I thought the MS stuff used optical pots though, but if
you look at the value bar when calibrating, see if the value changes
smoothly & stays level when you hold the throttle in a certain position.
If it spikes, change the pots, or clean them, or whatever solution suits
your budget ;-)
The other thing is that although I have no experience of it ( I have a
Momo Force, highly recommended) I understand there is a compatibility
problem between XP & gameport versions of the MS wheels. You might get
lucky & find a gameport-USB adaptor that solves your problem, but try
the wheel with another OS to see if this is your problem.

Another possibility -- but you've checked this, right? -- is that you
are running in one of the lesser car modes -- Advanced Trainer or
Novice Trainer. These cars only rev to about half of what the F1 cars
do -- and they have fewer gears as well. (From memory, so I am
probably wrong aboput both the class names and the number of gears.
Memory ain't what it used to be, as far as I remember.)

This might be a really stupid idea, but are you in F1 mode or one of the
training car modes. If you're in the beginners cars, then they do rev a lot
lower, and I think the default when you install GPL is for the beginners
cars.

Try changing cars to the full-blown GP class, you're stuck with an F2 or an
F3 <G>

<embarrassment>
Ahem. Um. Yes, well, as I said, it's been a few years since I played GPL.
Ah well, good to know it's not a fundamental problem with my wheel or
PC...
</embarrassment>
Thanks for pointing out my stupidity! ;-)
