Guess they don't want too many sales do they? I was on the fence about
buying this one. Then I saw it was only $30 (nice) but..I only saw a DVD
version?!! I don't care at this point to spend another $50 having to get
a cheap DVD drive along with it. So I passed on it.
I'm surprised they aren't offering both CD and DVD formats like some
other games.
DVD driver are becoming the standard but they are not THE standard yet
CodeMasters.
Complaint that TOCA Race Driver 2 is DVD-only
Destroy complained that TOCA Race Driver 2 was only sold on DVD and said he would skip it. AD called him a moron, and most replies said DVD drives were cheap and had been around since 1998. Steve Whitty objected to the harsh treatment, noting that not everyone can easily afford upgrades, and Damien Evans agreed the first reply was uncalled for.
Automated summary.
You are one sad moron.
Your lack of knowledge shocks me,and your daring to show that on a public
stage is bordering on brave stupidity.

I've had a DVD-ROM since about that time. FINALLY no more disc
swapping during installation.
Mayhap the games will be harder to pirate as well. Wouldn't be a big
loss to the industry.
Complaining about an upgrade that'd cost the price of two slabs is
just pitiful.

lmao I still have an external 5.25 floppy drive from an atari pc. hell, I
still have the entire atari 64 and 800 systems..lol and a working 486 pc
with dos 6 and a 300baud modem...lmao.. .
How times have changed.
As for this Toca game.. I downloaded the demo and its not to my liking.
Graphics are great but game play feels more like an arcade game. The
ps2/xbox gamers may like it.
DvD-roms seem like the wave of the future, but not yet. Give it another year
or so and the plain old cd-rom will fade out like the floppy drive has.
Re: Atari -- Your post brought back some mixed memories.
I distinctly remember paying $400 (that's not a typo) for the original Atari
computer floppy drive. I think that it was Model 850?
Lotsa money back then, but it brought lotsa fun with it.

because they can't keep up with the latest hardware!! a dvd drive here in
Australia aint cheep. If I'm going to replace my cd burner, I want a dvd
burner. they're a little more in price. I'm looking at $200 in my area.
Considering I earn $400 a week, before tax, those things are utter luxeries.

Ok, I "think" I will take you up on that.
There should be enough space in your box for _another_ drive, giving
you the ability to copy music cds directly by using the dvd for
source.
A new dvd reader costs a whopping $50
http://www.scorptec.com.au/index.php?catid=00000007&subid=00000113
If you insist on getting a dvd BURNER, considered luxury until just a
few moments ago, only the 8x high end models cost $200. A 4x costs
~$150

Its your choice to replace it with a DVD Burner instead of with a DVD Drive
Don't compare apples to oranges, two different things that do not cost the
same
While I do not agree with calling him sad for not having a DVD Drive, using
a DVD Burner as an example does not pertain to this.
I also have to wonder, pc gamers can pay 5x (sometimes up to 8x to 10x more)
the amount of a DVD drive for a Graphics Card but then complain about the
cost of a DVD drive? Especially when the DVD drive is a general use item
that will be used for many things other than loading a game that they bought

you don't get what I was on about. You put someone down because they didn't

as for me. as you put it. a wopping $50. to me, thats either no petrol in

yes it is, the original poster was getting belittled because he didn't have

and yes, buying of pc games in some households is also a luxury.

No Steve the original poster wasnt being belittled for that at all.
He was being belittled for his stupidity, and his apparent desire to show it

He owns a pc,a new game comes out on DVD (something which we have known was
on it's way for a while now) so he gets on his soapbox and slags off the
company Codemasters for making this decision because he hasnt got a dvd
rom.....the same dvd roms that cost 16 at my supplier.
The reply was in keeping with his tone at Codemasters and was sufficiently
tongue in cheek to get a nice variation in replies.Always good on a public
opinion stage.
After reading all replies I know for sure the original poster is talking
crap and should easily be able to get a cheap dvd rom if he badly wants the
game.
After all if thats the way things are going his small initial investment in
the dvd rom should furnish his purchase of games for many a year to come.

Destroy had not flamed or abused anyone in the newsgroup. just stated his
view on the game being released on DVD only. The first reply was to call him
a moron. totally uncalled for. That was the intent of my original post.
Yes cliff, they may have done him a favour. They certainly have done me
one. I only buy a couple of games a year. Upgrade the puter only when it
wont cut the grade anymore. the first part of this post wasn't aimed at you
either. Your posts have been civil. But as usual, there are people in this
newsgroup that believe their own bulls**t.

the overall "thought" of this thread
DVD Drives are the future.. while I do not think that CD-Roms will ever
completely go away (at least not until they are no longer backward
compatable.. in other words when something else comes out down the road to
replace even DVD drives), more and more software will be released on DVDs
due to size and cost considerations.
Since DVD Drives are so cheap these days ($35 US), a person is definately in
the minority these days if they do not have one. Software companies know
this and they know that the non-dvd drive owner is becoming a bigger
minority day by day.

You're right though - the original response by AD was uncalled for.
