MS Cart PR - not much activity here

8 posts by 7 people · 29 Jan 1998 - 31 Jan 1998

Sad to say, but it seems that there's more activity here for other sims, including ones that haven't even been released yet, than there is for Cart PR! This one's dying on the shelf REAL fast - didn't come close to it's potential. And no, I'm not a MS basher - just want to get my $ worth like everyone else. Tim

I, for one, got sick of the endless whining and bashing. Life's too short to argue over a game, especially since no one is going to change his mind anyway. The negativists won this one. Oh, please. That's like saying the reason no one's going to see the movie The Postman is becuse "the negativists won this one". Joe

That's for sure - usenet is not a medium for persuading people, merely for endlessly stating opinions. On the plus side, there was a lot of constructive criticism about CPR which I hope Microsoft learned from. No, the battle was lost before it was ever fought. CPR needed a lot more work before it was capable of winning people over. Cheers! John

With my "negativists" comment, I was not referring to the game's acceptance, but rather the discussion of the game in r.a.s. The flood of, in my opinion, immature commentary in this newsgroup just got to be too much. The tenor of many of the CPR postings here curtailed my participation, and I'll bet the same holds true for many others as well. I agree that MS must have learned quite a bit from the valid and needed constructive criticism. Unfortunately the majority of the conversation fell into a different category. While I have to agree with you about the negative commentary re: CPR, I'm just as guilty as the next guy, I think some of the blame can be placed on MS. CPR, IMHO, should not have been shipped as is. If you compare CPR to ICR2, CPR really does look much more like an arcade game than a true simulation. I'm not referring to the actual graphics, which are outstanding, as much as the overall "feel" of the product. Obviously, the garage settings are far superior to ICR2. But if you were to stand back and compare the 2 products, ICR2 comes out way ahead. The AI issue, for one, is inexcusable. There is no way that designers/testers could have accepted the level of realism the AI presents. I was initially very impressed with the level of participation in this NG from MS/TRI (What was the guy's name that posted so often from the CPR team?). However, like you said Jim, the level of immature and unproductive criticisms must have scared them off. I think CPR has the framework to be a great game, but with the advent of G.O.D., they may have scrapped the project altogether. By the way, what is the definitive stance on that? An incomplete product released to one of the most demanding groups of enthusiasts is a recipe for disaster. I hope that CPR will get a new lease on life in V. 2.0 if there will ever be such a thing. -/- Walk Walker BAMotorsports A Premium Sim-Racing Team
> While I have to agree with you about the negative commentary re: CPR, I'm > just as guilty as the next guy, I think some of the blame can be placed on > MS. I'd say ALL of the blame! Since the frame rate is a major issue in CPR I doubt they can include the kind of complex routines that would be necessary to make the AI good. It could end up worse than GP2 was. There is another patch in the works. Head on over to http://cart.gamestats.com to give your feedback to the patch team. Fortunately Papy has regained the license for CART and in any case I'm betting that the advent of CART 2 (ICR3) will kill CPR altogther. However, MS claims there will be a CPR 2. I just wish Papy had never lost the license else we'd probably all be revelling in ICR3 right now.
