I'm struggling to find seat time in GPL for my league and in F1 Challenge
as it is. The '65 mod sounds very intriguing, though, with cars that are
supposedly easier to handle and closer racing.

GPL 1965 mod release date announced
Ped Xing reported that the 1965 mod for Grand Prix Legends would be released within ten days. Kevin Clark and others explained that the 1965 cars were slower but easier to drive with improved tyre physics and closer racing, and mentioned possible 1950s mods. JP and others criticised the decision not to release a fixed 1967 executable to protect GPLRank hotlap records.
Automated summary.
Thats pretty cool an all....but *bracing himself*...why...er, '65?
Do we all want to go slower?
Were the cars more difficult to handle than their '67 versions??
Why not a 1973 mod or something??
Guess we'll all have to wait and see...

handle better. And they're not THAT much slower. Typical Glen laps are
in the 1.10's and pedal to the metal all the way.

be really tight. At somewhere like the Glen the difference between an
alien driver and a normal one will only be a second or so.

dissimilar to the 67's so were relatively easy to make from the '67 3dos
as far as I know.

It's scheduled for release on the 30th.

Sounds like the F2's and F3's. People who like those will probably like the
'65 mod. Same for those that hate those cars.

I find that the difference between the aliens and humans is *magnified* with
the slower cars.
Because of that, I've never been a big fan of F2 and F3, and likely won't be a
fan of the '65 cars. I'll try it, but I'm not holding my breath.

My understanding is they will be more like an FD but with less power and
more grip. The main reason people keep discussing close racing is that they
are more forgiving allowing the novices to push harder and get a bit closer
without falling off every other corner, plus they take less of the track
going sideways, so side by side racing is more possible.
I always found F2s more than compensated for there loss of power by being
even more slippery. The 65 mod will be quite a different experience so I'm
told.
Personally I always preferred the F1s not because I wanted to drive the
fastest but that it felt the best. Those in the know are raving about the 65
mod feeling better as the physics have been tweaked to overcome some of the
flaws in the GPL model. We will see, but I'm really looking forward to this
one.

After reading this I was wondering, if the GPL model is flawed, can they be
tweaked to a more reasonable, realistic level? And can it be released as a
new GPL?
New and improved GPL'67, with tire wear, etc. Include all the new GPLEA cars
and newly modeled tracks. Something stable and not crash prone like some
carsets and tracks.

Novices falling off the corners ? In the leagues I was in over the years,
wasn't just the novices; one of the things that caused a lack of interest in
gpl for me. Racing wasn't racing; all you had to do was stay on the track,
and you were assured of a good finish, since most everyone else was
overdriving.

Yes, it could. The '67 exe has been fixed. But it won't be released.
The ones in the know reason for this, is because they don't want to
invalidate the current hotlap records.
Lousy excuse imo, but whatever. Typical gpl in many ways; lets worry more
about an old one lap wonder time,(probably made by someone who doesn't even
use gpl anymore) then doing something that quite possibly would improve the
overall product, or gasp, racing.

An early '68 mod looks the most obvious, modelling the cars before wings
and they weren't that much different to the 67 machines. Leaving the
originla Papy season intact.

The 65 Mod basically *is* a more reasonable, realistic level. These guys
have tweaked their butts off for nearly two years to get it as close as
possible.
Of course, that's not to mention the new cars (car graphics), each with
it's own new handling characteristics, from the Lotus 33 to the BRM P261
to a superb-looking Ferrari, etc etc.
>And can it be released as a
> new GPL? New and improved GPL'67,
Well, yes and no, kind of. The mod team have long ago decided not to
mess with GPL '67 itself, but there ARE serious plans to by and large
compensate for this for doing the "Early 68" mod.
In other words, to take the 67 cars which were used in the early 68
races (before wings popped up) and then tweak their physics to a higher
level. This will basically get you what you'd like, just in another context.
The same improved/tweaked model will probably (!) be used for a '66 Mod'
as well, and the biggest goal for the longer term I guess will be the 55
Mod - yep, the Fangio era. This should take far less time since the main
mod things for GPL have now been just about figured out.
But although the tyre handling itself is improved, it won't be modelling
tyre wear etc. because that's just not in GPL itself. And this is an
add-on to GPL.
(And, let's not forget, it's FREE! Gentlemen,... start your downloads,
in a week or so.)

Well, sounds like real racing to me then.
What do you think would happen if we'd ACTUALLY all got into formula cars?
Besides, that's racing. To finish first you must first finish.
And in GPL type of cars, that's just plain difficult. Even the real aces
didn't actually always drive flawless races.

It's looking more likely that it'll be later in the 50's as the '55
season wasn't terribly exciting. I've already driven early physics from
'55 and '37 and it's quite exciting. The cars feel heavier and drift
alot too. Certainly interesting future projects from the mod team.

While I don't have much in-depth knowledge of the current gplrank
internals (Ed, Brian et al. will know more), I think it should not be
a big problem setting up a "new" rank for the mods or even an improved
version of the original 67 rank, keeping the old rank for
posterity. We faced much the same problem when the N200X patches and
mods became available, and Christoph, Carl and others have done a
wonderful job sorting it all out.

Like Uwe said. Every Nascar sims patches have changed the physics,
wouldn't be any different here. <shrug> to keep a hotlap record intact vs.
far more benefits just seems like a very lame reason to me.

Um.....not quite sure what a reference to us actually getting into the
cars is for, but whatever. We're talking a GAME here, not real cars.
And sure, it's difficult. All the more reason to drive within your
limits, which isn't what takes place the majority of the time in a gpl race.

I agree - it's a ludicrous reason on the face of it. Call it
"67fixed" or something, and there we are. Sure, it would rely on
people's honesty to submit their times to the right section... but
that's exactly what happens with player.ini times anyway.
I could understand if the people in question wanted to do mods like
this (very interesting-sounding) '65 one *instead* of fixing '67. But
if, as I infer from your wording, that fix *has* been done, then it
seems silly to withhold it just for the hotlap time reason. Surely
there must be something more than that?

Well, since Papy themselves acknowledge the flaws, don't know why this
would be. Plus, the exe is already hacked anyway.

I guess you don't realise that it's the same people making the 65 mod,

Is 'free' not good enough value for money for you or something? How can
you feel wronged by something offered free that you don't have to use?
If someone doesn't want to make a modified 67 season & no one else knows
how to, tough luck. I regularly race on vroc & have done for years, only
once have I ever come across a Bronda, and the driver was crap anyway.
I could understand people's concerns about GEM+ prior to it's being
released, but 2-3 years on it has made sod all difference to the pick-up
races (ie we are not awash with Brondas) and it has helped create
different formulae to appeal to less hardcore drivers.
Perhaps you would be good enough to give the long answer to my question,
unless it's "Yes, because I'm a gun-toting nut" in which case give it a
miss imo.

Who was it that said "When you can leave black lines from the end of one
corner to the beginning of the next you have enough power" ? ;-)

Not to mention the tons of work they've put into iGOR - which will
actually prevent cheating from that "infernal engine switcher". Maybe
they've just decided they want to turn thier talents towards something
that's significantly different from the original '67 season. I've got
exactly 0 complaints about what's to come, and in what order.

Um, you make it sound like some kind of work would need to be done for the
'67 season. It's already done. Just won't be released.

Somebody here had it on their sig line for a long long time. I'd say it
was the Boy Genius ...Mark Donahue. Probably spoken about the time he was
destroying Can Am with the 1000+hp twinturbo Porche 917-30. But that is
just a guess.

There was a concern at its launch but it really didn't have any impact and
it wasn't long before detection mechanisms followed anyway.
I would imagine it has paved the way for the more significant mods we are
about to see with GPL65 and the development has matured to detect mods
before starting online racing rather after analysing replays.
Personally I would like to thank these guys, not shoot them!
Cheers

Thanks for the link, Malc.
I think Roger Penske was quoted as saying: "Luck is where preparation
meets opportunity."

IIRC Jim Clark said something along the lines of "If you make a mistake
in a corner & don't crash you weren't going fast enough"
