GameSpot's glowing CPR review mocked
Posters ridiculed a GameSpot review calling CART Precision Racing the best game of its type, noting it listed steep system requirements as a con while praising frame rate. Some sent complaints to the publication. Side discussion covered whether F1RS's cockpits looked cartoonish, which turned out to be one poster running the wrong executable.
Automated summary.
Is this another review from a patient at the Betty Ford Clinic ????
Notice the con listed as STEEP system requirements:
My guess would be: 300mhz Pentium II with 128 megs of RAM and 8mb
video card.
Of course this doesnt address the bad AI and general gameplay.

This is the most utterly ridiculous, utterly incompetent, and most
grossly over-glossed, false review I have ever had the distaste to
read. His complete lack of sim-experience is shown by his complete
lack of understanding of a game. I could go on and on by quoting his
comments and then proving them incorrect with referral upon referral to
R.A.S. I won't bother, however, since from now on I will not ever pay
money for or waste my time with Computer *** World due to this
completely <words fail me at this time....> review.

I noticed that the review had lots of great things to say about the
interface, graphics, performance wrt hardware, etc.
Then I tried to find any comments about gameplay ...

I do wonder if the guy who wrote this ***actually played the game, and not
just had a peek at some screen shots.
This is a CC of a note I sent to the GCW editors. I do believe this is
futile though :-)
----------------------------------------------------------------
I just read your review of Cart Precision Racing. I think it is the most
utterly false and completely objectionable reviews I have ever read.
It is obvious to me and just about all of the rec.autos.simulators
community that this magazine is very much in need of quality
auto racing reviewers. If you really need help let me know I may
be able to find someone who knows what they are talking about.
For starters, your so called review doesn't even call attention to
the horrid AI. Why is that? It also does not discuss the lack of
yellows. Why? Or the ease of which you can lap the entire
filed at the highest level of difficulty on ovals (twice within 10%
race distance). How can you properly setup a car without tire
temperatures?
Between this and your apparent inability to understand the
current 3d video card situation (ask Denny what I am talking
about), I am seriously considering terminating my subscription

Scott pointed out the steep system requirement mentioned as a "Con" in
the article's summary... What strikes me as pretty funny, is that at
the same time, "excellent frame rate" is listed as a "Pro"!?! WTF? I
mean, couldn't you say that about ANY sim? I see the guy's point,
though. On a fast system, your car in CPR just "feels" fast. Of
course, he was probably using a TRUE D3D accelerator, instead of a
3dfx-compatible facsimile! Just kidding! <ow...OW!> JUST KIDDING!
STOP! <running for cover> :)
In regards to the "best game" comment, despite its faults, it's still my
favorite sim to sit down at and run a few laps. Of course, I still give
F1RS a spin every now and then...like, when I'm in the mood for riding
lawnmower racing (maneuverable as hell, but slow as Christmas).
Sean
PS: I still think it's funny that every positive CPR review is greeted
with such ridicule and scorn (even if I do occasionally contribute).
Sean,
I did miss that framerate comment. Of course if you are running it on a
300mhz with 64-128 megs of ram and a D3D card.. then you damn well
better have good framerate ;)
BTW - that 3dfx comment can get you sentenced to death row by some on
this group =)

Just curious, what type of system (and vid card) do you have? (I forgot
if you mentioned) And how much have you actually played F1RS?
Should tell you something then.

Is that all? What are the good points of this subscription that would
result in you keeping it?

I'm running a GW2000 P2/300 w/64MB. Video is an STB Velocity 128 + Monster
3D. I've actually spent quite a few hours with F1, typically at Monza or
Monoco. If you're interested in my criticisms of F1, the following things
irk me a bit:
The Super Mario***pit! I'm surprised no one's mentioned how lame the
***pit looks (cf. the configurable dual display in CPR).
The graphics on the whole often strike me as very cartoonish. Sometimes,
like when I'm watching the external views of a rainy race at Monoco I'm just
amazed; other times the game just looks cheesy. CPR isn't always as
"pretty", but looks more realistic.
The real killer, as I've said before, is the complete absence of any
sensation of speed (framerate IS awesome, though). When I come out of the
last turn at Monza, for example, and start creeping over 200mph on the front
straight, it feels like I'm not even moving. It sort of feels like I'm
sitting motionless and the scenery is being dragged by me. On occasions
where I set up a pass here, or end up racing wheel-to-wheel, there's just no
e***ment! Also as I weave through turns, sometimes upwards of 100mph, it's
about as thrilling as pulling out of my driveway! In CPR, you KNOW you're
hauling ass! I think it's a combo of the chassis vibration, the sound
effects, and the road and wall texturing...who knows? It just feels faster!
That said, I think F1 is a great game. In fact, my major complaint about N2,
CPR, and F1RS collectively, is that I can never decide which one to play!
For several reasons, I usually decide on CPR. I think the problem a lot of
people have is that they're not so open-minded... I think a few nits with a
game, an irrepressible need to feel superior to something, and the fact that
it's much easier to say something mean than to say something nice, allows a
pretty cool game like CPR to become everyone's favorite chewtoy and MS/TRI
becomes the anti-christ! It's one of the mysteries of the net why some
people seem to so actively pursue the things they purport to hate! I'll
never forget visiting (very briefly) the Papyrus boards on Genie shortly
after the original ICR was released. Papyrus had already abandoned the board
and all that remained were vehement, downright hateful World Circuit fans.
If anyone showed up saying anything remotely positive about ICR or Papyrus,
they were ripped to shreds. Why? Why were those people there EVERY day if
they hated the game so much? Unfortunately, I see that to varying degrees
all over usenet, whether the topic is television, movies, music, or games.
Yep... Continuing my rant above, it tells me that r.a.s., like every other
newsgroup, is ofttimes dominated by some of the most anal, elitist,
hyper-critical people in the world; and, if my opinion sometimes deviates
from this "group collective", so much the better. Besides, I've never had a
problem being a lone voice in a crowd...unless it's a crowd of Narns with
baseball bats! :-o

Hi Sean,
Man you sure hit this nail right on the head! I frequent the
CPR sites on the web mainly the Apex. Its message board is full of supposed
CPR haters who hate it so much seems they always check in daily hehe. Seems
like the jilted boys who couldn't handle the #1 babe so now they have to
make fun of her or do the sour grapes routine i.e.: Ah she was a dog I
didn't really want her anyway. But as a side note I always wondered why
more posters didn't like CPR now I know. They are all out racing it in H2H
on the web the majority I have met at the Zone have never been here. Aloha,
Mike

Eeeh, #1 babe, as in: has to grow up to become a sim...? ;&^)
BTW, I'm still interested in the patched version. That's maybe the
reason
a lot of people are still checking the sites. There's always some hope
left.
Don't take it personal, it's just my opinion! I hope you can take it
like a man.

Oh, SHIT! I just checked my shortcut and it was pointing to "diddykong.exe"!
WTF? I switched it to "f1voo.exe", and what can I say? F1RS rocks!
