Rescheduling RASF1 Imola and setup sharing
Ped Xing proposed rerunning the RASF1 Imola race. David G Fisher offered a 1:21 setup and Jan Verschueren gave wing advice, while Uwe Schuerkamp suggested using GTR2002 tyre squeal sounds for better feedback in F1 Challenge. Side topics included Stuart Becktell's autocross and plans for Barber Dodge, Eldred's slow PC, and how Alex Zanardi controls his race car.
Automated summary.
This weekend won't work for me either, got another autocross. Sorry 'bout
that :(

I wouldn't really call autocross "real racing" :-P...in other news, if
you're interested in seeing what I did, I've got video's from my three runs
online. Go to http://www.beat2k.org/stu/ and right click and save as. The
WMV files are 320x200 and have some frame drops...but they're tiny as all
hell. The mpeg files are 720x480...much higher quality (almost as good as
the base files weighing in at ~400 megs!). Hope to be able to make the next
RASF1 race btw.

I guess the thing I don't like about autocrossing is that it is such a short
competition, and many of the skills used aren't used anywhere else. The one
thing I really learned is how to learn a course quickly. I've done a few
track days and I've learned more there then in the 2 years of autocross I've
competed in. Theres a lot more I could go into...but lets just say I can't
wait until I can afford to run in the barber dodge series. (4 years if I'm
lucky)

Toyota Atlantic is the only feeder series left in the Champcar ladder.

Except that, of course, if you're trying to pretend faster than the

At the moment I'm unable to race, my Wife has decided that my "room" is now
to be a bedroom / study so I've been downgraded to a small desk that I can't
get my wheel on.
As soon as I've built or bought some kind of cockpit I'll be back for as
many races as I can make. (Not always possible due to the race clashing with
Sunday lunch at my Mum's ;) )

At Imola you predominantly need accelleration and stopping power. You want
some download, but you don't want to be pushing big wings around like at
Hungaroring. In qualifying you can sacrifise some top speed to dowload to
get a faster laptime, but otherwise concentrate on your mechanical grap and
the ability to trash it over the curbs in the chichanes.

If you'd like a setup, let me know. I worked a bit on one last night, and
dropped my time down to 1:21. It feels very stable to me, and can be run as
a Q or race setup with a good amount fuel. The fastest lap I know of (that's
legit) is a 1:20.4, so it is a pretty quick setup IMO.

I worked on a setup last night and wings of 48/46 are fine. Can easily do
low 1:22 with those wing settings. Would be best for him to start out high,
and then drop them down a bit after some practice if he wants. I am using
46/44 on a setup that enables me to do a 1:21. Still needs to be tweaked a
bit, but you can definitely run high wings at this track and still be fast.
Some curbs can be used, but others should definitely be avoided.
Like all the tracks in this sim, a driver needs to be ultra precise and find
the perfect line lap after lap in order to be fast. There isn't a better sim
(ever) at helping a sim driver to hone their road course racing skills.
Everything else seems very slow and like a Sunday drive compared to these F1
cars. You have to place the wheels of these rockets literally within inches
of the perfect line, combined with precise throttle control, or your lap
will suffer.
*Exactly* like the real F1 drivers.

I'd bet a CPU upgrade would make all the difference Eldred. F1C pushes my
2.6gig to the max so I'd guess your 1.2Athlon is spewing smoke ;) Anything
under 20fps is about impossible to drive imo and I'd bet you're in that

Thanks for the encouragement, and just so you know I'm planning to be self
financed for the Barber Dodge series unless I can completely 0wn people in
the go kart racing I plan to do next year (missed the deadline to do it this
year.) I'm hoping I can get a good paying job in IT that will allow me to
finance as little as possible of the ~40grand that is required for a
regional championship in Barber Dodge.
Where do you live? As much as I dislike autocrosses, it is a good launching
pad for track racing, if nothing else then that you learn to be self
confident simply because you've only got 3 minutes total during the event to
run. Car's don't matter at all either, I've got a Subaru Legacy wagon right
now, but before this I had a 89 Corolla...at least with that car I learned
about momentum. I'd do at least a few autocrosses first, then do a few track
days and see how you do there. At the two track days I've done so far I've
been outclassed car wise, but at the first one (first turn of Pocono) I was
the second fastest car in my group, and at the second one I wasn't fast at
all, but I learned how to be consistent, and no one kept up as much momentum
through turn 10 as I did.
Even if you can't afford Barber Dodge, there are a lot of other series that
you can go into at a lower price, although it will be your own car. Minus
the replacement cost, rally racing is relatively easy to get into. Buy a VW
Rabbit for a few grand that is already built up, and you can run asap.
Just because you might be getting older doesn't mean you can't at least have
fun in racing. You might love autocrossing, I know a lot of people in my
region swear by it. And with other series like NASA starting up, there are
other outlets then just the SCCA to run in that might allow cheaper racing.

Next week is also out for me.
It is interesting that the two most CPU clock challenged
drivers, Eldred and I, are way slower than anyone else.
Something I noticed in a Sepang hotlap video Ian P sent was a
low frequency "growling" as his tires neared their limits. I
almost never hear that sound. So perhaps faster CPUs don't
offer some feedback that others get.
Are we running the RH mod now?

What files do we need to overwrite Uwe? Ive always felt that was one of

I only get 30 fps on a CLEAR track... I'm sure that it's a factor, but I know

I take it you guys are playing F1C 99-02 or whatever it's called? From
looking thru this thread the multiplayer aspect does sound fairly
interesting. Is it generally considered a better sim than GP4? Can it be
played proficiently using keys? I'll get around to a wheel one day :)
Also, how important is a fast connection to the multiplayer game? I'm on
broadband, but all the way from Australia :/
It's somewhat difficult to find a copy nowadays. Don't bother without a
wheel. Imagine driving your car with on/off buttons :)
We have an Aussie (Steve Whitty) that runs with us occasionally in NR2003
(although F1C is still behind) and he seems to have a great connection from
down under.

You probably could, after all Zanardi is now racing one with no legs! I
might look around for a decent wheel later this month, and maybe a copy of
the game might show up on ebay or something.

Sounds good enough :)
I don't know what Zanardi is using but I highly doubt it's an on/off type
button. Im sure the paddles Zanardi uses have linear movement that
replicates a foot type gas/brake pedal.

Well yes that would be for certain. Altho from my memory of attending the
Melbourne GP which was his first race at Williams he couldn't even keep the
thing on the track or pointed in the right direction. Perhaps he does
indeed use some crazy on/off method. :P

Zanardi brakes with a pretty much standard brake pedal using his artificial
legs, and has a ring mounted around the steering column behind his steering
wheel which he uses to accelerate (pulls the ring further up the column
towards the wheel to accelerate more).

Busy with other stuff than simracing, but I might make an effort and
show up tonight if that's ok ;-)
