J. Todd Wasson previews Virtual RC racing sim
J. Todd Wasson of Performance Simulations previewed Virtual RC, a radio-controlled car racing sim using his physics engine, developed with Serpent engineers in the Netherlands. He said the base game would be a free download with paid add-on tracks and licences, and that there were no plans for a Mac version. RC racers in the group offered to beta test and discussed the cost of real RC cars.
With J. Todd Wasson (Performance Simulations)
Automated summary.
That looks really neat, are you working on that project?

Cool stuff Todd! (I used to race R/C, Heemstede and all - mostly
electro 1:12 / 1:10 though ;)

Thanks, Jasper. Yes, this is my little baby. It uses my physics engine and I
do all the data gathering and consult with the engineers on handling and so on.
It's been a very interesting project. Got to go to Holland three times in the
past year to work on it and will go back again at the end of June, so it's been
a fantastic opportunity that really arose from nothing but a hobby. A bit of a
dream come true for me really :-)

Wow! This looks really cool! Very original and different from anything
currently available. The graphics look very good.
A couple of questions if I may...
I assume this will be a commercial game?
If so, how can we purchase it? Online at local stores?
Are you planning on releasing demo?

We built all of our tracks from scratch within the past two years. Right now
we run 1/10 electric and nitro touring cars, and 1/10 electric buggies and
trucks and nitro trucks as well. Your game will be a great way to keep
racing on those days when we get rained out. Not that that ever happens. LOL

Hehe, I wonder what the % really is.. The sad thing is one of my best, long
time friends has a very nice Mac laptop and won't be able to run it either.
Seriously though, we'd have to rewrite basically the whole thing from scratch
to support another OS. I see now why devs frequently write for Windows only,
even if they don't really like the OS.

Thats why OpenGL is usually preferred by developers writing for
potential cross platform products.

Any chance of having 1/10 electric cars as well as the nitro. It's

About 4 to 5 per cent of the personal computer share is Mac, I gather.
However, that's still about 22 million people though.
Also, note that "Mac" with OS X is BSD Unix these days.
A lot of code could be ported relatively easily if a project supported
"Unix" (Linux/BSD/OS X) in the broad sense.

For games, maybe - given the need to optimize code. However, things like
Office or OpenOffice or PhotoShop are most often written as largely
platform-independent programs in things like C++.
Still, a Linux version, at least? (Hey, GPL runs thru VMware, I
gather..) That's another 20+ million people you know! ;)

Don't do it Eldred, I've raced these things for years, and they're just
about as addictive as GPL!
(Note: if you do want to try your hand, I'd go for a secondhand but
ready-to-run competition 'kit' car (that is: no toy cars!) with an
electric engine. Far less hassle for a beginner than building an R/C
internal combustion car from scratch.
Cheaper too, a secondhand all-in kit could be as low as $ 100 - $ 150
these days.
And then I'd look around if there's an r/c car club in Detroit (should
be) to run some races in 'standard class'. Stay away from the
higher-powered semi-professional 'modified' classes, these cost big
bucks to keep up and that's part of why I quit doing national
competition and went back to club racing.

I run 1/18 scale electric F1 / Formula Nippon at times with a friend
on a local parking lot, great fun. Cost me around 250 Euros for the
car, controller and a couple of spare rechargeable packs.
