> Ok all you race fans tell me what is the best racing movie/ video you have > seen? I am curious and my wife always brings home junky vids from > Blockbuster hehe. B^) Thanks, Mike The first 15 minutes of "Grand Prix" (1966?) at Monaco is about as good as it gets. The rest of the movie contains a plethora of excellent race scenes...with a whole lot of soap opera separating them. There is a fair bit of carnage in the movie as well. "The Italian Job" is another fine car movie. It's a Michael Caine caper with a bunch of Cooper S's running through narrow italian streets, jumping off roofs and stuff...very fun. -- Neil Yeatman Ajax, Ontario, CANADA

Mike, Try to find a documentry called The Speed Merchants. Great Sports Car racing from the early 70's. Grand Prix is always good on a rainy afternoon. A film documentry about late 70's Can-Am called Circuit, is also worth a look. Check out the back of autoweek for the Motorbooks International catalogue. They have tons of Racing films.

Easy...Le Mans, starring Steve McQueen. =) Marc
SimRaci 31 Dec 1997#389680
Good action and camera shots for sure, but you sure about the acting? =P Looked to me like a "grounded" version of Top Gun. ;) Cheers! Marc
What...are you on *** or something...? Maybe the best "crash and burn" film of all time... As far as the racing went in DoT, it REALLY sucked. If that'd been real NASCAR racing, them boys'd been kicked outta there like a Green Bay field goal...
My pick: Redline 7000. Great 60's NASCAR flick; classic action from Daytona, Darlington, C***te, Atlanta, and Riverside; good music, and some pretty believable storylines...

The two best films-- 1. "Grand Prix"--James Garner, Eve Marie Saint, Yves Montand 2. "Le Mans"- Steve McQueen Brandon > Ok all you race fans tell me what is the best racing movie/ video you have >seen? I am curious and my wife always brings home junky vids from >Blockbuster hehe. Yes, but unfortunately Sly Stallone is involved with the project, and I even heard mention of Antonio Banderas playing Senna. The thought is quite sickening.

It is important to remember that any film WITH Steve McQueen is inherently superior to any film WITHOUT Steve McQueen. Therefore, the answer is Le Mans. -- Prophet and Interpretive Dancer Fixer of broken stuff
> The two best films-- > 1. "Grand Prix"--James Garner, Eve Marie Saint, Yves Montand > 2. "Le Mans"- Steve McQueen Another one worth watching is an oldie titled "Indianapolis Speedway" with Clark Gable. On the documentary said, there's a film entitled "The Quick and the Dead" about GP racing in the 70s that's particularly good.

Hi All! GP2 fan here. An interesting racing movie was "The Racing Scene" a Documentary about James Garners 1971 or was that 1972 racing efforts at the Baja 1000, Daytona 24 hours, 12 Hours of SeeBring and a late entry into the Formula A car series. I found it interesting to see the "Davey" Hobbs [as James Garner calls him] and Sam Posey in their glory days of racing! The best part is that it is in rotation in SpeedVision's "Lost Drive In". No it is not as exciting as Le Mans or some of the other movies, but I enjoy it! It is definitely worth watching. I find it especially interesting when it runs before a SpeedVision live coverage of F1 on the same weekend! The Speed Merchants - great to watch with the book. Le Mans I've also heard that "Weekend of a Champion" (or something like that) by Roman Polanski about JYS is very good but I've never been able to lay my hands on a copy. Bob

You're right there, LeMans is definitely the BEST racing film. Although, if you ignore the corny story line, Grand Prix with Jim Garner has some great racing footage and if you like old-time Indy Car racing, The Big Wheel with Mickey Rooney is not bad either... -Al

Lets not forget 'Winning' with Paul Newman, nor 'The Racers' with Kirk Douglas.

Another couple of movies to try and find are six pack with Kenny Rogers...nice little movie about stock car racing u.s.a style...not the greatest movie. But he starts out on the short tracks of america driving a latemodel and ends up driving winston cup. Another movie for pure laughs is Death Race 2000 good stuff, points for running people down. Movie to avoid Stroker Ace...ewwwwwwwwwwwww John Barr The Trashdog

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. Thank you, don. I would have missed it. (As I've said/posted before, too bad McQueen went so overboard trying to attain realism that the studio yanked control over the movie from him. But still a treat.) And by the way, _Grand_Prix_ is, IM(and many others')HO, the best racing movie of all time. The opening sequence, as someone else already mentioned, is exquisite. Yes, a lot of cliches and soap operatic lulls, but still the best, by far. Michael Tracy ------------------------------------------------------ Lisa: "That's specious reasoning!" (edit) Good music? Good as in unintentionally hilarious? You're joshing us, right? I mean, the musical sequences are so silly they are entertaining, granted, but "good"? Hey, eveybody's entitled to their opinion, but I wouldn't want some innocent person picking this movie up expecting (among other things) good music, and suffering a massive psychological discombobulation as a result. :-) Michael Tracy ------------------------------------------------------ Lisa: "That's specious reasoning!" > Hands down ,No Questions asked Le Mans. What about that one with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman? Gee that was good! I just cant seem to remember the name though. Gee he was goin quick! I'm sure he was coming out of the corners at around 400mph! And they were not speeding up the film or anything. DPHI 04 Jan 1998#390185
Michael, Sorry to say,"Circuit" revolves around the late 70's revival of the Can-Am, with it's rebodied, Formula 5000 chassis. It is a fasinating look though, of Rahal, Sullivan,Fabi and others, who had just graduated from the smaller formula and were moving up in their careers. Fantastic in car footage, especially if you miss Riverside International as much as I do! don

Got carried away seeing the magical "Can-Am" name, a habit I'd better break myself of, given it's "revival." Thanks for straightening me out. (And I wrote, like a doofus...) I never attending an event at Riverside, much to my regret, but enthusiastically followed the extensive coverage in the Times (the race sponsor) when Can-Am raced there in the late 60s. As I mentioned in another reply, I jumped the gun and missed the "late 70s" part of the post. My face is Ferrari-red. But I'll defintely check the movie out--sounds better than sitting through _Redline_7000_ for a brief glimpse of RIR. "On Any Sunday" was made by a gentleman named Bruce Brown. The movie is a semi-documentary about motorcycles and motorcycle racing. The film features Steve MacQueen, Malcolm Smith,*** "Bugsy" Mann and many other greats of the era. Included is wondeful footage of hill climes, desert racing, flat track and more. The section on the Elisinore Grand Prix is worth the rental fee. Give it a look if you have a chance, it's a lot of fun.If I'm not mistaken, Mr. Brown also made the classic surfing film,"Endless Summer". He treats motorcycles and the culture with equal respect. don

All right, I've got to throw my two cents in...... How about Gumball Rally? Cool movie about a race from NY to LA. Had Raul Julia as a factory Ferrari driver. Still makes me want to see how fast I can do it. Doug Kirks
