A Way To Get Better Performance in CPR

8 posts by 6 people · 29 Dec 1997 - 30 Dec 1997

I found one easy way to get better performance in CPR- add a better graphics card. I had a 2Mb 2D card, and then put in a Diamond Stealth II S220. The difference is amazing. I can now run in full 640x480 mode on a Pentium 75! Can't wait for the patch. -- Regards Glenn Beaumaris ------------------------------------------ "I believe in God-After All Helen Hunt Exists" =================================== The Quote of 1997: "The first thing you notice is her spirit and her talent, then her beauty hits you, and you're like, 'Well, excuse me, but she's gorgeous!' I think adding a 3D card instead would make allot more sense if your after a performance boost. The difference is more than just amazing. >I found one easy way to get better performance in CPR- add a better graphics

Yeah right, 3D accelerator or not, there is no card available that will make a P75 run CPR at full 640x480 without it being a complete slide show. CPR doesn't even run well on the recommended settings of P166, 32mb RAM, and 3D accelerator. I have just that(P166, 32mb, Pure 3D-3DFX), and at full 640x480 I have to cut back so much detail just to get frame rates above 20, that it is not even worth it. If you really want to see something amazing graphically that makes good use of 3D acceleration, try Ubisoft's Formula 1 Racing instead. Don Chapman

Don, I have had the exact same results with a P/166 and the Orchid card. Heck, I had the same result with a PII/300. I think it takes a Cray SuperComputer with some wiz-bang 1 gig video card to run MSCART at decent framerates AND full detail. I think that's important because I don't like to run at anything less than full detail. You are entirely correct about F1RS, it's a blast on a normal computer, 3dfx card, and full detail. In all frankness, I don't think that Microsoft will ever be able to patch MSCART. In fact, I think that just about anyone praising this game at all has some other agenda. Come on people, give me a break- the graphics stink, the controls stink, the AI stinks, what did I forget, right, the framerates stink. I think the code is hopelessly mired, as is Microsoft's own 3d API, Direct3D. They may be able to tweak mild improvements, but to fix it, I don't believe it is even possible. Not unless they patch it to Glide and abandon Direct3D, if only for this game. Can you see Microsoft in effect admitting that their own 3d API stinks? Nope. Give it up people, figure that fifty bucks was not too bad for another lesson in politics. Keep the disc around, they do make nifty coasters. There, I feel better now. The Stealth II *is* a 3D card. It uses the Rendition V2100 chipset and has both 2D and 3D capability. What I think you mean is that it is not a "3dfx" card. Under Direct 3D, which is what CPR uses, the difference between 3dfx and Rendition V2100 is not always substantial. For titles optimized for 3dfx, the differece is obviously great. On the flip-side, titles ported for the Rendition V1000 chipset scream on a Rendition-based card. There are issues getting them to work on a V2x00. For under $100, the Stealth II is a great choice for someone who is replacing their existing "weak" 2D-only card as is a Riva-based card. For owners of Milleniums and such, which have great 2D but no 3D, *adding* a 3dfx card *is* a slam dunk. Whatever you do, don't think of *replacing* your existing 2D-only card with a 3dfx card. You will have a very rude awakening. ;-) The 3D card front can be confusing. There are issues for many people other than speed, like flexibility and cost. For a good overview on the major 3D video cards check out http://www.gamecenter.com/Hardware/Roundup/3dcards2/ Cheers, Jim

I never said it was perfect, all I was doing was trying to show others in the group that there is more than one solution to a problem. What other agenda would I have in praising MSCART, or any other sim. My last name is not Gates you know. What most (reasonable) people on this ng are trying to do is help each other with suggestions to make all the sims run better, without having to resort to a Cray supercomputer. I don't appreciate being slandered like that. -- Regards Glenn Beaumaris (glennom+AEA-msn.com) ------------------------------------------ +ACI-I believe in God-After All Helen Hunt Exists+ACI- +AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQ- The Quote of 1997: +ACI-The first thing you notice is her spirit and her talent, then her beauty hits you, and you're like, 'Well, excuse me, but she's gorgeous+ACE-' You don't even notice what she's wearing because her aura dominates.
