Diamond Stealth II Comments/Question

3 posts by 3 people · 26 Dec 1997 - 27 Dec 1997

I put in my new Diamond Stealth II card yesterday to replace my Intergraph Intense 3D Rendition board. I had quite a bit of trouble installing the drivers and getting Win95 to boot; but hopefully most of that is history now. I must say that I am quite impressed with the performance of this inexpensive card. I've run several D3D games now with a direct comparison to their performance with this card and with my Diamond Monster 3Dfx. This inexpensive card seems to do slightly better at D3D than the Voodoo card! Even after I turned the 3D control panel off, the next day some of them were choosing the Stealth II for D3D. I got my Nascar 2 to run in DOS with the V2dosfix.exe file, available at http://www.eng.uci.edu/~liaor I got ICR2 to run with the new .exe and the old Speedy3D file. I'm having a real problem getting the mirrors to work again....when I put the new Speedy3D file back in, my system locks up bad, requiring me to pull the plug and restart. I get garbled colors at the top and bottom of my monitor, and then nothing. Is there any way around this, or what are some commands to turn the mirrors features down so I don't have to look at this mess?

The following has worked for me on the ICR2 Rendition version.
Quoted text (29 lines)>1. Copy the patch files into ICR2 root dir. >2. Edit the indysafe.bat file as follows. >rem INDYSAFE.BAT - Runs IndyCar II Rendition in FIFO mode >rem FIFO mode is slower than DMA mode, but works on almost all machines >rem * Expects game executable INDYCAR.EXE in game directory >rem * Currently expects 9/10/96 version of SPD3D.UC >rem * ICR2's DOS4GW will not work if Quake's QDPMI is installed >C: >cd C:\ICR2 >rem set SPEEDY3D=C:\ICR2 >rem set SPEEDY3D_DMA= >rem Only use this if your machine fails to recognize the correct amount of >rem memory installed on your board. Set it to the number of megabytes. >rem set SPEEDY3D_MEMSIZE=4 >if exist INDYCAR2.DMP del INDYCAR2.DMP >echo. >echo INDYSAFE.BAT: Redirecting output to file 'INDYCAR2.DMP' >echo. >INDYCAR2 -gRN1f > INDYCAR2.DMP >mode co80 >echo. >echo INDYSAFE.BAT: Displaying file 'INDYCAR2.DMP': >echo. >type INDYCAR2.DMP >echo. >3. Create a shortcut to run indysafe.bat from Windows95. (I have heard that >the card will only initialize properly when the program is started from >Windows.)
I have read here that some have been able to get ICR2 to run in DMA mode. I haven't; but, N2 runs fine on my machine in DMA mode. Thanks to the kind soul that provided V2dosfix.exe, I can now run in plain DOS. It seems odd that someone besides Renditon or Diamond is coming up with the fixes now. N2 and ICR2 are still the best simulations around and are a great way to showcase their product. The patch for ICR2 is a beta and is almost 2 months old now! ( I guess their all working on Quake.) The Stealth2 is a decent card; but frankly, the only reason I have one is for ICR2 and N2. Thanks to all the people that work on the add-ons for N2 and ICR2 and the folks that help us with these damn video cards.

Run first ICR2 with the old spd3d.uc, then with the one that came with the V2000 patch. All works fine then!
