Notable threadLeaked GTR press demo circulates
Dean Purdy linked a leaked press demo of SimBin's GTR, featuring the Lister Storm and Morgan Aero 8 at Spa, found via the Rage3D forums. Users shared download locations and the install password, and early reactions praised its realism and especially its sound. The thread later drifted into headphones, positional audio and personal finance.

It's a little early to judge (especially as I'm finding the car a bit of a
handful!) but this is definitely the best sounding sim I've driven to
date. Glorious noise, perhaps even better than the GPL Ferrari. Looks
superb as well and feels interesting to say the least.
Well worth the download.

Doesn't appear to use surround sound though. Hope they can fix that.

Yes you will. Positional audio works best on headphones.

Only in your dreams and some advertising :-) Squeezing proper positional
audio out of two speakers is right up there with the two loaves and seven
fishes thing in the premiere league of minor miracles. Sure you can fiddle
with an illusion of "somethingdifferentness", but that's not positional
audio.
I've listened to demos of this effect via headphones and after I'd stopped
laughing, I laughed a bit more then plugged in another two speakers and
tripped over the speaker cables while admiring the great positional sound.
Then I unplugged them and got on with driving.

I'm sure they do... three speakers per ear after all. My reservation is
that at that price point the quality has to suffer. I use a pair of
Sennheiser HD580 headphones normally and the sound is *stunning*. But then
at over twice the price of the Zalmans for a third of the speakers you'd
hope they would be :-)
I've tried many other types of headphones (living in a flat means it's far
easier to wear headphones and not have to worry about the neighbours for
gaming, movies, TV, whatever) and the Sennheisers are just head &
shoulders above cheaper models for bass response. If Sennheiser produced a
set of surround sound headphones with multiple speakers (rather than some
fancy sound processing module that can only do so much) I'd be tempted,
but there's a Chinese saying which goes along the lines of "Buy expensive,
cry once" and although I'm sure the Zalman's do a fine job at that price,
they're too cheap to inspire confidence, and the reviews I've read sound
like I'd be disappointed.
Still, at that price I might be tempted to try them out some time in a
moment of weakness. But the last thing I need is yet *another* set of
headphones cluttering up the desk. I have Sennheiser radio headphones for
wandering around listening to the radio/TV, the 580s for desk-bound
activities, more pairs of earbud headphones than I care to count for
assorted mini-kit, a spare set of radio headphones that proved too
uncomfortable to wear long term, a pair of ridiculously expensive Bose
noise reduction headphones for when the neighbours are asking for a damned
good kicking, and... and maybe I'll skip the Zalmans for now, ok ;-)
Andrew McP... wondering if it wouldn't be cheaper to buy a detached house
than headphones. Hang on... detached house=300,000ukp, total headphone
budget=600ukp, last year's wages=20k ukp. Ok, I'll stick with the
headphones :-)
Some Sennheisers are nice but the thing that disturbs me with them is that
every model in their range sounds totally different in terms of sound
character.

I think that's the nature of headphones, and all speaker technology in
general. It's often like trying to decide which food you like best...
picking one "flavour" of sound over another depends upon your mood, the
circumstances, and -- of course -- your budget. There's no such thing as
best, but there is definitely such as thing as too cheap :-)
The 580 set are very impressive, though I also like the Beyer DT range for
quality & comfort (obvious given they're widespread professional use). My
Bose noise cancelling set also sound excellent (definitely a different
"flavour" to the Sennheisers though), but due to their compact & isolating
nature, are less comfortable to wear than the weighty, but low
pressure 580s.
The Sennheiser radio headphones (HDR 65 circumaural in my case) are
noticeably poorer quality, but you're paying for the freedom rather than
pure quality. And that freedom is great... except when you forget which
set you're wearing and start breaking leads, which can get expensive very
quickly with decent headphones!
As with so many things in life, chasing the "perfect" all round headphone
can get expensive, and it's easy to end up with a collection that suit
different circumstances but rarely get used because it's frequently easier
to just reach for whatever's closest!
Still, everyone should have a hobby ;-)

As you get older the hearing goes down hill fast. I had exceptional
hearing
when I was younger and spent thousands on speakers. But after all those
years
of rock concerts and loud music well...........:-)
I use the Zalmans for gaming not listening to music and in that regard
they give
me a great bang for the buck. Was looking at your Sennheisers the other day
but
decided I so rarely use headphones for music that I didn't need them.
The problem with the reviews I read were the audiophiles trying them
didn't seem like "gamers" that need surround sound in a FPS. I agree they
aren't the best for music, far from it but I didn't buy them for that
purpose.
Again using a product for what it was designed for seems more
appropriate.
But I digress. :-)
I understand where you are coming from. I have a house and I'm running
out
of room with antiquated computer parts and accessories. Twenty five years of
this "hobby" makes me wonder at times if it is worth it. I could buy another
house
with what I have spent on hardware and software but one of these days I'll
learn. ;-)

Heh. I've kept Quicken records on my spending since 1994, a year after I
got into computers. Adding up the various category totals is a *really*
bad idea. And I've only been at it for a decade or so!
> Sounds like the UK is too expensive. :-)
Someone forgot to build houses towards the end of the 20thC. Add to that
low interest rates and <bang> artificially high prices. The sooner
interest rates get back to 10% the better. That'll make 'em squeal :-)

So do a backup/restore. When my drive crashed last fall, that was the ONE
thing I had backed up. I was able to continue on the new drive without missing
a beat.
I've only been running Quicken for about 5-6 years, but such a spending graph

Almost cant go wrong.
I burn an original onto CDs and keep the active copy on old HDs.

I *knew* it... I only have data back to Jan 2000. But in that time, I've
spent 10 times more on fast food than I have on fitness. Those categories just
happened to be right next to each other... :-(

I'm lucky, I don't need to consult Quicken to know what I spent on both
in the last 10 years... the answer is nothing. But then the less you spend
on fast food, the less you need to spend on burning it off ;-)

NO fast food in the past 10 years? I'm impressed - I couldn't do that.

It's like any bad habit, easy to break if you want to. The trick is
wanting to :-)

Maybe not *fit*, but not eating fast food improves the chance of you
maintaining a healthy weight. I can admit that, even though I can't do it in
practice...

I get eight hours of exercise every night at work. No breaks, nothing to
eat, just work. Fitness isn't a problem, sanity might be though ;-)

That's my experience anyway. There's so much wonderful (in terms of
pleasure if not always healthy nutrition) food out there wherever you
look, and the immediate pleasure we get from it is very addictive. I'm not
immune, I just prefer to indulge in occasional chocolate chip cookies (ok
whole packets of ;-) instead of burgers & fries and takeaways. If I do eat
unhealthily it's at home where I at least have to make the effort to
prepare it.
Of course if I had kids I'm sure I'd be dragged down McDonalds etc by the
marketing hype just like every other browbeaten parent who's sworn never
to take their kids anywhere near the darned places :-)

Now you sure that's not more of a contribution to your lack of any
additional pounds than your not eating fast foods? :)
I eat what I want, when I want, but ensure I don't gain any extra pounds
by regular exercise.

The point is that even with a very active lifestyle (by most standards) I
still have to be careful what I eat. Every year I have a lean month or so
to pull my weight back into line. The biggest single thing we do to burn
energy is keep our body heated. Exercise is just the icing on the cake to
keep us fit, not a cure for the multiple temptations of highly processed,
very high calorie foods.
It's like, a holistic thing, man ;-)
