where can a sim racer walk in and buy the Canopus Pure 3D card, I want one, and I can't seem to find anyplace who stocks it let alone anyone who has heard of it outside RAS. I'm in aht San Jose, CA area. thanks

I ordered mine from Canopus. I'm not sure if they are available at the retail level. I've never seen Canopus products at any of my local computer stores. When i ordered mine they were backordered but i did receive it when they said I would. I believe I read on here that they are backordered again until Jan? You might check at their homage at http://www.canopuscorp.com/ It is an excellent card though. I've added it to the STB Vel 128 AGP card and it is as fast in most games as my Riva card! While its very fast, like all of the Riva128 cards, the image quality isn't nearly as good as the Voodoo or Rendition cards. -- Eric T. Busch http://ebusch.akorn.net >Why do you have to add the pure 3d card to your STB riva based card. >Does the riva have problems doing 3d?

See the 12/15/97 news item on the subject of "The Biggest Quake2 FPS" at http://o3dfx.allgames.com/news/today.shtml The RIVA 128 card is definitely behind Voodoo 1 and far behind Voodoo 2... And add the lesser image quality ... and I have to ask, why? Hmm, the things I got from this: 1) Voodoo1 is still the best untill Voodoo2 comes out. 2) Rendition V2200 is faster than Riva or PowerPR but not as fast as Voodoo1. 3) Voodoo Rush sucks. 4) Voodoo2 rocks!

> Hmm, the things I got from this: > 1) Voodoo1 is still the best untill Voodoo2 comes out. At least on Quake2.... remember, different software packages will test out differently. But I think Quake2 is a fairly "heavy" graphics game, so it should be a fair representation of the kind of performance we can expect on the type of games we run (sims...) Amen... Ah yes... All the Pre-hype looks like it might be true. But remember they originally claimed about 100fps.. but 60 is not bad.

I'll do you a deal... you can have my Righteous 3D, and I'll get the Pure 3D. Sound okay?
> > 4) Voodoo2 rocks! > Ah yes... All the Pre-hype looks like it might be true. But remember > they originally claimed about 100fps.. but 60 is not bad. Actually, they claimed 100fps on Quake, not quake II. I get 39fps on quake with my voodoo, where they get 26 on quake II. 60 seems about right for voodoo2 on quake II if they get 100fps on quake. -- Markus
Congratulations. If your aim is to make Riva 128 look especially bad, you've managed to choose _The_One_ benchmark. The Riva OpenGL drivers are currently Alpha2, which means they shouldn't even be publicly available (and they wouldn't be if there hadn't been public demand beyond belief), they aren't even beta yet. As nVidia points out, they are still very much trying to make it work _right_, performance issues will be dealt with later on and no optimizations have been made yet. Actually, even in this benchmark, Riva based card is performing surprisingly well with just alpha drivers. That's why. Of course, if you're _only_ interested in playing games when it comes to 3D graphics, 3Dfx (or possibly some other dedicated 3D game card) is probably the way to go. Personally, I'm also interested in VRMLs and 3D modeling and considering this, Riva cards are simply unbelievable in what they can offer for their price. The ability to accelerate most 3D games today is an added bonus I don't mind having around. Most 3D games I've played recently (F1RS, Jedi Knight, G-Police) have been very enjoyable and I suppose that's the only thing that really counts in the end. --- Antti Markus Peteri "He was a bold man that first ate an oyster." Your points about RIVA are well taken... But for many of us, 3d represents *** and that's it. Doug

Well, I saw one the other day at future shop. That's in canada mind you but if it can be bought off the shelf over here, it must also be in the states.

I'm well aware of what chip the Pure3D uses. However, if you had bothered to read the post I was replying to, you would have noted that the author had questioned why someone would want to add a Voodoo card if they already had a Riva128 card. I was simply pointing out that while quite fast, the Riva128's aren't a perfect 3D solution. -- Eric T. Busch http://ebusch.akorn.net
