Toca opinions needed

3 posts by 3 people · 15 Dec 1997 - 15 Dec 1997

I just saw the Toca sim in a shop here in Denmark today. The shopkeeper is probably still busy sweeping the floor as I drooled a bit over it. But unacustomed to my self I controlled the urge to find my plastic and CHARGE ! I first wanted the educated, objective and sound opinion of the ras crowd ..... :-) So ... how does this sim hold up folks ?? (My system is a Cyrix 166+ with a 3dfx card, and the Thrustmaster GP wheel. will it do ? ) Regards ___________________________________ Remove the obvious to mail me.

Hi Lars, First of all, its not really a sim - its and arcade game but with accurate track models and fairly realistic handling and cars. It has arcade style gameplay (e.g. have to get a certain number of points on one track to progress to next, and you catch cars up artificially fast if you fall far behind (7-8 seconds in one lap is not realistic) As to your system, until the weekend I had exactly the same, but I've just bought a P166MMX CPU, overclocked it to 188 and the game runs full speed at high res, very high detail. It looks much better than the Playstation version if you've seen it. On my old Cyrix P166+ the game ran slowly (to get a similar framerate I was running medium res/low detail) and response of the cars to steering also suffered. I guess the MMX makes a difference to the speed... The GP1 wheel is fine for the game although it takes getting used to. On the whole I would recommend it - just don't hope for a full Nascar-style sim and you won't be disappointed... Should do. It's not the BEST 3dfx graphics, but they are pretyy good and the gameplay/driving model is great (for an arcade racer). Why not check out the demo for yourself? Joe
