Just wondering which video card will be best for playing F1RS. I want
to get the highest frame rate, rather than the last word in 3D detail.
My present set up needs upgrading so the sky is the limit! Still like
playing GP2, but when will that 1GHz Pentium be out so I can play it
with a 50Hz frame rate at Monaco :)

I have to agree 100%
The D3D port of F1RS is just pathetic I can't even play solo with all
the details at reasonable Framerate using the ATI.
With the 3dfx The game NEVER slow even on monaco start with all cars,
accidents, smoke etc etc....
ATI may be powerfull enought to make the same i Don't know (I play
Jedi Knight in 1152*864) but the game isn't optimized enough fore good
D3D performance.
BTW We ahve tried GP2 on one of my friend new P II 300 : It still has
slowdown at monaco hi res :))

You mean your card is pathetic.
Ya, you just said it... using the ATI.
So let me get this straight... the one who first complained about the
slowdowns in race was using a P166/32/3Dfx configuration. Your P200MMX
is nothing special, that alone won't explain the difference. Now, are we
supposed to believe that your framerates NEVER drop, not even if you had
20+ full detail F1 cars drawn ahead of you. Boy, you must have some 3Dfx
card there. When will it be commercially available?
As for the question, 3Dfx or D3D, the answer is almost too obvious. If
Ubi recommends 3Dfx, then who can you believe if not the manufacturer
itself. 3Dfx it is. They just added the D3D to reach a larger market.
In defense of the D3D cards though, it has to be kept in mind that while
3Dfx cards form a relatively homogeneous pack, D3D cards come in all
"shapes & sizes" imaginable. Therefore D3D gamers' experiences of the
same title may vary, not just slightly, but _considerably_. So much in
fact that one D3D gamer may praise the game to nth heaven while the other
judges the game as being the most unplayable load of ***he's ever laid
his fingers on.
Btw, exactly what are the effects in F1RS that D3D players are missing
out? I've already read several statements saying the D3D version wasn't
that much slower but all the slick effects were missing. Which effects
are these?

I have a Intel P133, 48 MB RAM and of course a 3dfx. At the start of a
race going into the first corner it will become a slide-show, even if
I disable almost all details/textures/replays. After the first corner
it gets quite accetable. Its almost acceptable if I only drive
against half the field.
Now a week ago I tried F1RS on a friends Intel P200MMX with 32 MB RAM
and we used my 3dfx card. There was almost no slow-down going into the
first corner after the start of a race with almost all
details/textures. When I set details/texutres/replay down to the
settings I use on my P133 there was absolutley no slowdown at all !
Oh, with his not so fast D3D card it wasnt better than with my 3dfx
on my P133. But he had much worse graphics.
